Start by criticising these so called environmentalist and or volunteers who were playing their stereos at high volume in the
Wildlife Centre the only semblance of work they were doing looked like graffiti that is found in suburban melbourne auckland and all over the uk these miscreant all came from Australia new Zealand uk I reprimanded them and told them that they will scare these Animals Off with this noise that sounded worse than an out of tune lawn mower and I took further action. The negative aside It is of Great Importance that decent people with the intention of learning about Orangutans and other Wildlife visit this Very Informative project and Improve their knowledge levels it is a Life changing phenomenon that enriches the senses.

It's regrettable to give this Wildlife Centre only three stars but please allow me to explain.
This is a conservation project and we understand that funds need to be used wisely, so some of what I'm about to say might seem conflicting, but that's how we felt when we left here - quite conflicted.
We are tourists in Malaysia, we are true nature lovers and parents of young children, we came here to educate them on some species that are struggling and to impart upon them the importance of maintaining natural habitats and being responsible for the welfare of wildlife where humans are causing an impact.
Unfortunately, apart from what we know from our own research, we weren't able to learn much because there are very few signs or information plaques about any of the animals (their personal stories) or their specie's general eating preferences, statistical decline, breeding cycle or habitats. As we walked through what is essentially quite overgrown jungle areas with rough pathways, we felt like we'd discovered an old zoo that had been abandoned some time ago (which of course made for an exciting visit for the little ones!). We kept our voices low and approached quietly to be respectful of the animals who are essentially here because of an unfortunate life prior to being housed in this centre.
Whilst we were here, we didn't encounter a single person other than one man at the front gate (who was helpful in explaining the map) and one person in the museum. There was no evidence of any food or water in the enclosures, and the window on the binturong enclosure for example was so dirty we could barely see in.
In saying this, the animals were absolutely beautiful and all looked in very good condition even if their cages are small. We especially enjoyed seeing the Palm Civet, False Gharial, the gibbons, hornbills and of course the main reason we visited - the orang-utans and sun bears, both of whom have stilted platforms to maximise viewing.
We would come again, and would encourage others to do so, as you'll see some spectacular creatures and support a cause that clearly needs a financial boost. But, echoing the views of other past visitors, don't come expecting it to be like a zoo, or even resemble sanctuaries you may have been to before. It's very basic. With a bit of investment, future visitors could have a much more meaningful experience. Sadly I don't imagine there is anything much to spare for improvements after the priorities are taken care of.
And don't take a taxi here and get dropped off, make sure you ask for wait and return, because you'd be stuck here if you didn't have agreed transport.

This conservation center places the orangutans who are rescued. Sure a good program in ensuring the orang utan is sustained

We visited here after our disappointing trip to Semanggoh where we didn’t see any orangutan. Even though they were captive it was great to see them here. Most of those in the enclosure won’t ever be released back into the wild as they have been so damaged by their captive experiences but they are loved. Those that are being rehabilitated aren’t on show which is quite acceptable. Met and spoke with a very informative warden. Good visit.

Hello,
I’m thinking of doing this, I’m just not sure if this is the best of The Great Project Orang trips? As there are a few to select from.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi, I'm going on this voluntour trip in a couple of weeks with my daughter. I was just wondering what suitcase/rucksack to bring. Would a medium sized wheely suitcase be okay rather than a holdall which is recommended? Also I was wondering about the size of rucksack to take as it's not clear from the itinerary how many days you are away from your suitcase? Thanks very much

Hi, I did this in April. You'll have a great time.
What we found was everyone over packed!
The problem with a suitcase is its quite hard to move about between places. The way to impress there is pack light.
I would suggest a rucksack if you have one, as its easier to simply throw on your back and get going. Lots of people were on travelling holidays so did have suitcases. so don't be put off by taking one, if you have one and don't want to pay out for anything else. But I would suggest only take one for both of you.
I down sized twice. Once at the initial guest house, then at the orang-utan sanctuary. We all felt the packing list should be re-written.
You will take your stuff with you pretty much wherever you go, so best not to take too much. But you always have a 'base' so can leave stuff there. You will go from the guest house, to the sanctuary, then to other stop off places. You wont be 'trekking' with your suitcase.
You will need a 'day sack' - I would suggest a fully waterproof trekking bag. An ocean bag. You can get one of these when you are there, just ask straight away.
These are made of a thick tarpaulin material, that rolls down to seal the opening. excellent and will keep everything totally dry.
My small rucksack had a 'waterproof over lining' - like a bike HUMP. but it just filled with water on the first trek we did, as it thrashed it down for best part of 2 hours.
Pack each set of items individually, and take some plastic bags to help keep stuff dry. eg. a bag of pants, tshirts etc. it's easier to find stuff that way, and keep it dry. A tip from my traveller friend.
Take 2 sets of clothes that you keep dry at all costs, (for the evenings - but nothing special, something light weight, and long sleeves/legs, to keep the bugs off)
Then take 3 sets of day clothes, shorts/socks/trousers or shorts/zip offs.
the lighter weight your clothes the quicker they will dry.
I took plenty of walking socks as hate wearing the same pair again, but often your feet will be wet from the start of the day, so you get used to it.
I got some karrimor light trekking socks, from sports direct, 3for £10 or something.
then take your rain jacket etc. only really needed on the boats to keep you warm. I took a sun hat, and some sunglasses, but only wore them on the boats to stop the spray.
My biggest tip, is don't try to stay dry - you wont. its warm enough to be wet, and warm. damp clothes soon warm up with your body heat and due to the humidity its hard to dry things. it does eventually thou.
Re boots, they suggest 'water proof footwear' but actually there's no way they will stay dry, if youre walking thru a river up to your waist. The important thing is they can let the water out, so possibly boots with holes in the sides to allow water out.
you can buy some watershoes there too. everything is really cheap.
Most of the places have electrics, be in on timers/generators. so you can recharge batteries phones etc. And pretty much all sockets were standard uk 13amp so no need for a travel plug.
I chose to leave my phone in the guest house safe - as its unlikely you'll get signal in most places.
Have a fabulous time.
Give my regards to 'the hippys' and 'Alvin'

Hi, I am on the Orangutan tribes and tour Volunteer and wondered if anyone else has done this? I am looking for advice on the types of walking boots/shoes to buy, I hear open-webbed sided boots are better but have no idea where to start looking! Also any advices on how to keep the leaches off? How did people keep their stuff dry and scorpion free? Thanks :0)

Hi Jeannie,
Sam here from The Great Projects (the company which runs this project). In terms of shoes, we would always recommend either a sturdy pair of trainers or a pair of walking boots. Walking boots can be found at many outdoor stores - however we recommend you try a few pairs on to see which are the most comfortable! In terms of leeches and scorpions, this isn't that much of a problem on this tour, however the one thing we would recommend is to cover up as much as possible and check your belongings every morning and evening! Finally, in terms of keeping stuff dry, we would recommend packing waterproofs and purchasing a waterproof rucksack cover. Hope you have a fantastic trip! TGP Team.
