“Jambatan Angkat” is Terengganu’s latest iconic landmark. It is the 1st drawbridge built in Malaysia & Southeast Asia at a cost of RM248 million. Construction started in August 2014 & finished in mid-2019. The tower drawbridge is 638 metres in length while its 76 metres bascule can be raised & lowered using counterweights to allow vessels to pass underneath it.
Personally, Kuala Terengganu’s Drawbridge looked very similar to London’s Tower Bridge. It has 2 skybridge on the 15th floor where the floor is made out of glass. It also doubles up as an observation platform. One can walk on them & see the view from up above. There is also a tour of the engine room for the curious. Tickets are sold online. Package A which includes technical visit is priced at RM15.00 for adults & RM10.00 for children. Package B which includes technical & gallery visit are sold at RM22.00 & RM15.00, respectively in the same category.
My partner had enrolled in a “Steps Challenge” which required locking in as many steps as possible on a daily basis. As a result, in order to show support, we walked from our Hotel to the Drawbridge in an effort to collect as many steps as possible on the last & 2nd last day before breakfast.
The last day was on Malaysia’s National Day. Since it was a special day, the knitted snowcap depicting the Malaysian flag was proudly worn by my partner. We took quite a handful of photographs with the Drawbridge in the background. We saw many joggers & cyclists too. It was quite refreshing to see many Malaysians living a healthy lifestyle.
Terengganu has the latest technology in the world of drawbridge. Thus, we had hopes of seeing the drawbridge being lifted up but it was not meant to be. Visitors can browse through its official social media page to find out when the drawbridge will be lifted. The drawbridge opens daily from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm from Monday to Thursday & from 10:00 am – 10:00 pm from Friday to Sunday. However, it is closed for 2 hours on Friday from 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm.
There’s also a restaurant inside where visitors are treated to the “State Food”, a wide array of food from all 13 states during a luncheon. A cultural dance from various states in Malaysia also takes place during the luncheon as part of the entertainment.
We will be back to experience all the above in due time!

We stayed in a hotel with direct view of the drawbridge. Wanted to experience driving on the bridge, but ended up waiting for half an hour for the bridge to resume traffic (one side of the bridge was down, another side was up). Many cars ended up turning back and took another route. The kids were disappointed that we didn’t eventually get to cross the drawbridge but remain watching it from far.

It was good to see, and well worth making a taxi ride to get to. It was good to walk upon, but better to see, and worth making a detour to any point you wish to view it from, depending upon your preference.

Easy parking on the north side. Check out the food trucks in the evening. Lights up at night with various colors. Sadly, new construction on the south side blocks both parking and views. Poor city planning for such an iconic landmark!!

Some say it resembles the Tower Bridge of London. However, for those who have been to the actual Tower of London, be prepared to be a little disappointed.
However, is it still a nice spot for photos both with it in the background and driving on it. It probably would have been best at dusk or dawn. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to stick around till then.

One of the new tourist spot in Kuala Terengganu. Went there at night and the light shining to the bridge looks beautiful, not sure what’s the view up on the observation deck as it is closing soon when we reached.
Was told this is the first drawbridge in Malaysia. Good to drop by to take photos if you are travelling to Kuala Terengganu.

Highlight of the city but going up cost you RM10 per person and not much to see from there as it looks a bit abandoned.

Many local travellers would find time for a quick stop just to take photos. Local council needs to develop this area with additional shops or amusement parks in order to attract tourists to spend more time here.
