Baron Ivan Kruzenshtern was a Russian explorer who led the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe between 1803- 1806. The voyage was approved by Tsar Alexander 1 and the Russian American company. The main aim of the voyage was to improve trade with Russian America i.e Alaska. Other aims of the voyage were to establish trade with China and Japan.and to explore the possibilities of trade with South America. Tsar Alexander wanted to extend Russia's influence in North America, and had requested that Kruzenshtern investigate the coast of California for a possible new Russian colony.
The Anglo French attack on Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky in 1854, changed the Russian plans in this region, and eventually led to the sale of Russian America i.e. Alaska, a few years later, as the Russian Government had deemed it impossible to protect from attack. Alaska is the site of the Cape Krusenstern National Monument which is one of the most important in Alaska, and is dedicated to this famous explorer. There are two other parks on Sakhalinskaya Street dedicated to famous explorers. The NV Rudanovskogo park is at the intersection of Lenin Street, and the G. Nevelsky park is at the intersection of Prospekt Mira. If you are interested in the history of exploration in this region, I would advise a visit to the Kruzenshterna park. The park is accessible 24 hours, free of cost and photos may be taken.
