What a fabulous experience! Delivered by my friendly and knowledgeable host Charles, this was probably one of the more unusual locations I've had the pleasure to shoot in.

I was in Kyoto for 3 days and one of the afternoon was dedicated to a photoshoot with a Maiko (an apprentice training to be a Geisha). I had a good session as the Maiko was accommodating and just before the actual session Lukasz showed me some possible photo ideas. This was especially good because my time with the Maiko was limited. After looking at the photos I’ve taken, I wished the lighting was better. There are some unflattering shadows on her face despite her being only 18 years old. Overall the session was good.

Thank you to Paul for his invaluable tips on this afternoon tour walking around Gion. Paul worked hard to challenge me to see things through news eyes and a different perspective. He gave me tips from both an aesthetic and technical perspective and enhanced my understanding of the capabilities of the camera. At the same time I learnt about his experience of living in Kyoto and history of the city. He encouraged and challenged me to approach strangers to see if I could take their photo - which definitely was a helpful strategy to improve my photos. I would really recommend this tour. Thank you also to Lukasz who helped with behind the scenes logistics.

I signed up for this for the two advanced, knowledgeable photographers in our family (that's not me!) I suggested that Paul focus on the "guys" (husband and adult son) because they really care about the details. I think Paul could teach me night photography because he was good at explaining things so I could understand them. However, I realized that either the people who cared about learning, or I, the beginner, could learn, and I asked Paul to focus on them. I was so happy to enjoy the evening. I think Paul would be able to teach to a diverse group, but I really wanted the guys, one of whom does a lot with night photography, to be able to learn.
The crisp January night (I recommend Uniqlo long underwear) was beautiful. It was quiet and we were in the hills at this amazing shrine with only an occasional person around. It was magical. I would not go alone up there at night because it would be easy to get lost - there are more trails than what we did with Paul, and it might be hard to find one's way back.
I would recommend Paul to either beginners or advanced photographers. I liked him as a person, not just a teacher. And, because he is American, I felt very comfortable asking him questions about Japan that I might have been nervous about asking Japanese people. If Paul did other tours, I would have wanted to see if he was available as a tour guide.

Charles was a superb guide/instructor. He was knowledgeable, kind and easy to hang with. Charles helped me capture some phenomenal images I would have never achieved on my own. I highly recommend Eyexplore Tokyo by Night your.

I learned so much and got some really great shots. Paul is also a great source of information on places to go while you are in Kyoto and the area. So if you book one of his tours, he can give you some great advice on where to go to get great shots--and avoid crowds.

My experience photographing a lovely Maiko of Gion Higashi in a 150-year-old Kyoto farmhouse was absolutely the most inspiring and exciting photography experience I've had. Eyexplore's guide, Paul Crouse, was superb as a photography guide, expertly preparing the scene, briefing me on what to expect and helping with camera settings, lighting and model posing, all the while allowing me to realize my own creativity and have a truly great photographic experience. This was my first time working with true Geiko (Maikos or Geishas) in a studio-type setting. Our Maiko, Masano, was breathtakingly stunning in her beauty, poise, style, charm and overall manner. She was a joy to work with. Though pricey, I would do a Behind the Mask experience again for the rush of creative energy this authentic Japanese aesthetic experience offers. Eyexplore does it right. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough.

I recently took an afternoon/evening Kyoto Bespoke Adventure with EYExplore (Paul Crouse) in Kyoto. The six hour tour covered an numerous locations around Kyoto that presented great photographic opportunities. Additionally, Paul was a fantastic instructor and taught me new skills. I highly recommend EYExplore Tours and specifically Paul as a photography guide.

This tour was great.
It was exactly as advertised, and teaches a lot of useful tips and methods to improve your night time photography. Using some additional lights, you can create moody shots and illuminating the background or a point of interest.
Fushimi Inari is great to visit at night, and combining it with a photography workshop was an obvious choice for me.
The two+ hours went extremely quick. Thanks Paul.
