The 3rd Ryushikai Calligraphy Exhibition was held at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art Annex from May 30th (Thurs) to June 2nd (Sun) in 2024, so I went there. There was no admission fee and it was a very good exhibition. The building here is the annex, but it is a nice building and has a great atmosphere, just like the main building.

The museum is beautiful, but my focus on this particular visit was the Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto. What a beautiful and surprising exhibition. I loved reading the comments and thoughts of Murakami-san, and how the whole project came to be. This is a completely worthy experience for people of any age, if they like art.
One thing I couldn't understand was that if they are trying to raise money, why they:
1) rush people so much at the gift shop (this was VERY annoying)
2) don't have smaller sizes in some of the clothing (I wanted a sweatshirt, but they were huge!)
3) have more variety of design in the current items
4) don't have MORE things (e.g., socks, pens, stationary, keychains, magnets, glasses....etc.).
I feel bad, because I think the gift shop could have brought A LOT MORE to raise the funds needed. I, for example, would have "contributed" -if given the opportunity and the greater selection. Those would have been amazing "omiyage" :-)
If you're in Kyoto, don't miss this exhibition. COMPLETELY WORTH IT!

Modern art museum in Kyoto, very extensive collection of modern art including a large number of works by Banksy. highly recommended to visit this museum.

It was reopened in 2020 after renovation and was designed by Jun Aoki and Tetsuo Nishizawa. The Japanese garden, with Higashiyama as a backdrop, is also wonderful.

An interesting space with a numer of special exhibitions. We were fortunate enough to see a modern, urban art exhibition.
The museum was not as expected. The museum at home has permanent collections which are free across the entire complex, with special exhibitions as well, it is not the case here.
It was still worth attending but if you are looking for a space full of paintings and art from either a precinct or State collection you may be disappointed.

various art exhibitions are held here.
Not only can you enjoy art,

I went to see the Andy Warhol exhibition for the first time in a while.
It was my first time since the renovation, and on top of that, it was a rare day with snow on the ground.
The museum has an interesting feel, with new buildings surrounding the old building.
I like old things, so I'm glad they kept the old building.

Superb museum (gallery) with impressive collection and thoughtful (Japanese and English) explanations.
I adored the summer-themed exhibition and bought some very reasonably priced books in the shop on the way out to retain the memories of the beautiful works I saw.
There is a pleasant cafe if you need a rest after a lot of walking. The building itself is a masterpiece too.
I would definitely add this to your Kyoto itinerary if you want to see some relatively modern (19th/20th Century) artwork with excellent explanations so you understand what you are seeing. You can combine it with a visit to the nearby Heian Jingu with it's huge vermillion gate.
Very reasonably priced from memory too.
