Happened to walk by on a Friday night with a pair of Japanese friends. One popped in to confirm if there was room. There was, but then my friend was questioned if she had any foreigners with her. She answered yes, but that I was fluent in Japanese so their wouldn't be any communication issues. They said they were refusing entry to all non-Japanese patrons and there would be no exception. It immediately singled me out as a burden to the rest of the group, an outsider who's mere presence limited access. My friends, of course did not feel this way, and we're quite shocked that such a place could legally operate with such an openly racist agenda in the heart of Kyoto. But how could I not feel guilty at being the source for refusal of entry.
Kyoto is a city that is renowned for its omotenashi, an extreme level of hospitality that is largely unmatched in the rest of the world. What a shame that the disgusting Sake壱, a shop that can't even muster basic human decency, is able to operate in the midst that.
Fortunately we found a lovely alternative, Shu-bar right around the corner. A better selection and a much better atmosphere.

I visited there on Friday evening with a Japanese friend and an American friend who speaks japanese fluently and lives here. They had a plenty of space but asked me if there are any foreigners with me. I told them he speaks japanese fluently and lives here but they didn't care about it. They said that they don't know where to "draw a line" if they accept "those kind of foreigner". I mean I didn't really understand why they need to "draw a line" it's very very racist. I tried to argue with them but at the same time I felt very ashamed and upset as a Japanese that how they treat us without even having us. I cannot believe that there is this kind of racist place

金曜日の夜に日本在住の日本語が流暢なアメリカ人を入れた３人でお店に伺いました。カウンターが空いてますと言われましたがそのあと外国人がいるか聞かれ、いると答えたらお断りされました。日本語を喋れる旨を伝えましたがどこで線を引けばいい？のかが難しいとよくわからない説明をされ、(線引きをする理由も差別でしかありませんが) 追い返されました。日本人としてとても恥ずかしくまた憤りを感じました。
日本は、特に京都は、おもてなし大国と呼ばれていますが、このような店がまだあるのだと凄く悲しくなりました。

My friends and I stumbled upon this place in search of a restroom on a Friday night – wow was the caliber of this place a pleasant surprise.
Once we came in, we were told that an English-speaking host was on the way. ~10 minutes later a woman came to ask us what we were looking for in a sake (sweet vs dry, flavorful vs crisp, etc). All four of us gave different descriptions, the hostess asked clarifying questions, and then gave us individualized tastings. The selections were all exceptional. If you’re in the area, highly recommend dropping by for ~45 minutes.

Read half of the reviews about this place were bad. English speaking waitress has attitude, unfriendly to non-Japanese, etc...it’s true!
While they have lots of sake, and the waitress speaks English so she could explain but rudely, it is not worth the while to visit. There are many sake bars around just not known because they don’t speak English.
The place is very small and patrons are allowed to smoke in door. So it’s over whelming with the strong cigarette smoke and smell. Even for a avid sake drinker myself, I will not revisit. Why pay to be put down?

Ενας απο τους λογους που ειναι γνωστη αυτη η χωρα ειναι και για τα σακε τους..Και ηταν λογικο στο χρονο που ειχαμε στην ιαπωνια να θελουμε να δοκιμασουμε οσο σακε μπορουσαμε. Αρχισαμε απο το Τοκιο και απο διαφορες pubs να δοκιμαζουμε. Σε καθε μερος το σακε ηταν διαφορετικο οπως και τα παντα γυρω μας. Το καθενα ειχε τη δικια του γευση.. Αλλα ημουν σιγουρος οτι στο Κιοτο θα βρισκαμε το καλυτερο σακε. Και οντως εγινε. Βρικαμε αυτο το μερος μεσα απο πολλα διαφορα σακε bars και ειπαμε να του ριξουμε μια ματια. Οταν φτασαμε ο χωρος ηταν μικρος αλλα πολυ ομορφος. Αλλα αυτο που μου εκανε εντυπωση ηταν τα 3-4 μεγαλα ψυγεια γεματα μπουκαλια απο σακε. Εκει καταλαβα οτι ηρθαμε στο σωστο μερος. Η κοπελα που μας εξυπηρετησε ηταν πολυ ευγενικη και γενικα το μαγαζι σου εδινε την εντυπωση οτι ηταν πολυ σοβαρο. Δεν ηταν ενα μερος να μπεις και να μεθυσεις απλα. Ηταν ενα μερος που σ προσφερε υψηλης ποιοτητας σακε.
Με τα πολλα μας εδωσε ενα καταλογο να διαλεξουμε ποιας κατηγοριας σακε θελουμε. Ηταν 4 οι κατιγοριες και ειχαν αναλογες γευσεις οπως και αναλογες θερμοκρασιες τα σακε. Με τα πολλα διαλεξαμε ενα και ειμασταν παρα πολυ τυχεροι. Στη πρωτη γουλια δακρυσα. Ειλικρινα δεν ειχα ξαναπιει κατι παρομοιο. Δοκιμασαμε και αλλα 3 στη πορεια και ολα ηταν φανταστικα και ιδιαιτερα. Επισης και το φαγητο τους ηταν πεντανοστιμο.
Ειλικρινα για εμας ηταν μια ανεπαναληπτη εμπειρια αυτο το μαγαζι. Μας ειπαν οτι τα σακε που εχουν ειναι δικα τους. Δηλαδη στο εμποριο δεν τα βρισκεις. Βρισκεις παρομοια για παραδειγμα οπως οι μπυρες Sol με Corona. Οποτε σιγουρα οταν ξαναπαω στο κιοτο θα επισκεφτω αυτο το μερος ξανα.
Και κατι τελευταιο θα ηθελα να πω. Διαβασα καποιες κακιες κριτικες για το μαγαζι πριν παω απο καποιους τουριστες που δεν τους επιτραπικε η εισοδος. Το μαγαζι θελει τα σαββατα κυριως να εξυπηρετη ντοπιους και αυτο βγαζει νοημα. Το μαγαζι ειναι παρα πολυ μικρο και με βαση την ποιοτητα του θα ηθελα μια μερα να δινει σακε στους Ιαπωνες. Αυτο προσωπικα το σεβομαι και το καταλαβαινω σε σχεση με καποιους αλλους που δεν μπηκανε ποτε στο κοπο πριν πανε να δουνε τους κανονες και πως δουλευει το μαγαζι και με την αρνηση της εισοδου τρεξανε κλεγοντας να κρινουν ασχημα αυτο το σπανιο μαγαζι στο διαδικτιο. Πριν παω ειδα ποιες μερες ηταν οι καλυτερες και οταν φτασαμε η κοπελα μας εξηγησε και απο κοντα τους λογους.
Οσο για τις τιμες που ξεχασα να αναφερω ειναι λιγο ακριβες για τα δικα μας πορτοφολια αλλα για την ποιοτητα ειναι ισως και λιγο χαμηλες. Δεν ειναι για ποσοτητα αυτο το μερος. Ειναι για να δοκιμασεις και να δεις κατι διαφορετικο!
Αυτα ηθελα πω και για οσοι θελετε να πατε εκει προτιμηστε την παρασκευη καλυτερα προς το απογευμα να πατε αντι για το σαββατο που το μαγαζι ειναι μονο για ντοπιους!

This was truly a special find...
A gracious hostess....she was so much more than a bartender.... with a thorough knowledge of the range of Saki made this an incredible experience. I never knew there was so much variety ...there were over 200 kinds. It was a bit like walking through a wine list...did we like dry, or sweet, filtered or not, hot cold etc. We wanted to adventure so she helped us select 5 sakes that would go to different extremes. She explained about some of the regions and, well, wow her range of knowledge was impressive without being snobby. The small menu thoughtfully compliments the beverage.
To be clear, this is a sake bar and not a restaurant. Definitely a place to savor and relish this delightful beverage and chat with freinds. Very cozy and in a little side alley. Thier logo suites...(grasshoppers)...friends making a light noise at the end of the day. Don't miss this hidden gem

一見強面なご主人ですが、さにあらず観光客にもやさしく接してくれます。
酒のつまみも豊富で、何より高級な日本酒が目白押しにもかかわらず、タバコが店内で吸える店は、貴重です。

I recomend this lovely place. If you are a foreign, you should go any day except saturday (if i am not wrong), when there is a kind waitress who speaks english and explains all types of sakes and meals and suggests you depending on your preferences. Saturday is her day off, she explained us, so the owner, who is also the chef, can´t give an english service, but he´s so kind also. In our experience, being argentine, the language could be a big wall, but not for that it means a bad intention from them. The owner, asked through the waitress where were we from, he gave us a new tofu for tasting, and meanwhile he learned a nice phrase in spanish in order to join us to the door when we left the place. They gave us a pin of the place too. So, their gestures were so cute, the sake very nice and the meals, one of the most tasty food we ate in Japan. I recomend it 100%. :)

We loved this place so much that we stopped by two nights in a row. Our new bestie :) recommended what has now become our favorite sake at the moment. She was incredibly kind, patient and knowledgeable when recommending new sakes to try. We had a great experience here!

Nos sentaron en una de las dos mesas que tienen y nos hicieron levantar porque decian que era mesas para cuatro personas.
Nos sorprendió porque sentaron a cuatro personas y despues la mesa de al lado se fueron y se quedó vacia en ese momento entro una pareja y los sentaron, la verdad que no entendimos porque y le preguntamos si nos podiamos sentar y nos dijeron que no.
La verdad que no lo entendimos no se si porque eramos extranjeros o no se.
Pedimos 5 copitas y nos cobraron 4000 yenes cre que bastante excesivo.
Nos sorprendió porque sentaron a cuatro personas y despues la mesa de al lado se fueron y se quedó vacia en ese momento entro una pareja y los sentaron, la verdad que no entendimos porque y le preguntamos si nos podiamos sentar y nos dijeron que no.
La verdad que no lo entendimos no se si porque eramos extranjeros o no se.
