When I travel to a different city in Japan, i always do my research on which cutlery shops are the best. Who makes their own knives? Who is well known? Do they have what I'm looking for? Shigeharu caught my attention simply for two reasons, they were the oldest in Kyoto and (best part) you buy the knives from the blacksmith himself! Aritsugu knives have a great selection of handmade knives and are known throughout the world but their knives arent made in kyoto, theyre made in Sakai. Shigeharu knives may not have the luxury look and feel as Aritsugu knives but they DEFINITELY have more character than their respected competitors at Aritsugu. I myself have bought knives from these two sources (1 honyaki from Aritsugu and 2 santouku from Shigeharu) and I cant really say which one is better. Yes Aritsugu knives look more luxurious if that's what you're into, but Shigeharu puts more character into their work. The knives really give off a tough, working knife look to it, but performs just as good as any high priced knife out there. The shop owner at Shigeharu will come out and talk to you about his work and the history if you're willing to have a chat. The guy is really cool and very helpful. Theyll engrave your name on the knife as well.

We literally went to Kyoto so we could visit this knife master and purchase knives-we were thrilled to meet the proprietor and his wife. These knives are not online-it is a very small operation, everything totally hand forged. We got a chef's knife and two smaller knives. These are some of our proudest possessions. Considering the reasonable prices for this level of quality, you don't really need to bother going anywhere else except to thank your stars you found this amazing knife master.

After reading reviews we visited this little shop. It is easy to find as it is a short walk from the Nijo Castle. The knife maker greeted us very warmly but speaks almost no English. He was very helpful and through google translate we were able to communicate. He has a range of very well priced knives in different shapes, sizes & steels. If he does not have the knife you want he will make it for you. This was the case for us. We visited at 4pm on the day we ordered and pick up was 1 pm the next day. He also engraver names in the knives. We highly recommend a visit to this humble knife maker and shop.

A friend put me onto these guys for genuine Japanese cooks knives (they also sell other implements like scissors and saws etc) otherwise I would never have found them. The knife maker /owner has been perfecting his craft for a very long time and the knives are beautifully made, simple design and unbelievably sharp. Being a former chef, I have a lot of good knives but the one I purchased here is the sharpest knife I have ever owned. A very nice touch to get your Japanese name initialled on the blade too (for free). I paid 17000 yen for a 30cm knife which for a top end professional cooks knife is cheap at twice the price.

Visiting Shigeharu Cutlery was one of the most memorable experiences of my time in Kyoto. The shop owner and I communicated using google translate. He was patient and very thorough in answering all of my questions. In the end, he provided me with all of the information needed to choose the perfect knife. A month later the only regret I have is not purchasing a second one. If you think you are interested in purchasing a Japanese knife, I highly encourage you to visit Shigeharu Cutlery...

This is a very good place to take your Kyoto souvenir. Personalized handmade knifes. We bought a chef stainless steel knife for 17,800 JPY. Owner barely speak English but his service is excellent, he guides you a bit thru the kind of knife you can buy. My kind of souvenir.

One of the highlights of my trip. This shop is the real deal, far away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping district, the store is not much to look at but contains some of the must beautiful hand forged Japanese knives I’ve seen and at very affordable prices (considering that this is a true handmade craft product). Knives ranging from yen 10,000 to 20,000 for most blades. The owner is very helpful and despite our lack of Japanese skills could walk us through the range of knives available and their uses. Got a gorgeous Damascus steel chef knife and a couple of Usuba knives (for cutting vegetables) for gifts.

I've been wanting to get a useful souvenir from my trip to Japan. I enjoy cooking (and eating) so I've had my eye on an authentic Japanese Nakiri knife. I purchased one from Shigeharu in damascus steel for ¥20000. This price included putting my name on the blade. I'm looking forward to using the knife and trying to improve my knife skills.

This place was one of the highlights of my Japan trip. Amazing authentic knife maker, and a very cool small array of knives to choose from. Not expensive, not flashy, but deeply authentic. Take Cash.
