Amazing museum that tells all aspects of imperial Japan's wartime atrocities, from forced labor to comfort women to Nanjing massacre. Graphic visuals are hard to view but necessary to understand the depth of the atrocity. Brave and essential mission to spread knowledge about these difficult truths!

This is a great little museum that exposes the 'other side' of Japan and the very naughty things their military got up to - particularly between 1937-1945.
As Oliver Stone is quoted as saying at the museum, there should be one of these in Tokyo and Kyoto and other tourist hotspots.
Lots of photos and displays showing things like the comfort women and Nanjing Massacre as well as the forced labour of Koreans and Chinese.
Although there are English translations (8/10), bring your reading glasses as the type is very small.
I was the only person in the museum at 10.30 - 11.55am.
I was very grateful to the elderly lady who was staffing the place and the fact that she kept the floors spotlessly clean because I was sitting on the floor in order to read some of the displays.
Very educational and I'd consider it a MUST DO in Nagasaki
Adult entry was 250 yen

This museum tells you basically the other side of history and that’s why you will find some “negative” reviews; but please go there and reach your own conclusion.
I arrived at the museum to find out that was closed that day. A lady (one of the nice ladies in the picture), who works as a volunteer there and was passing by, saw me trying to figure out what to do next and asked me if I wanted to visit it. Even though it was closed, she opened it just for me. So I had the entire museum just for myself!
We discussed for almost half an hour after I finished the visit. She was very kind and happy to see foreigners visiting this museum.
Besides the grateful personal experience, I was touched by her story: it seems that this museum does not even appear in the official tourist guides (even is criticized by the city itself) since the main goal is to provide self-critics about negative Japanese acts committed against other cultures over the recent history (against Chinese, Koreans...).
Pictures, texts, objects... all the representations of those atrocities were very emotive and hard to see and to read... but gives you another side of the history!
Obviously not everyone is willing to accept their own mistakes of the past and in this museum you find that perspective. She even offered a lot of explanations since some of the descriptions were in japanese and korean.
When I told her that was my birthday she even offered me some chocolates and candies :) !!!
I guess it will remain as my best souvenir from Nagasaki!

As a traveller, I am always eager to learn more about the history of a country I’m visiting, both the good and bad sides of it.
Many countries have scores of museums to showcase their triumphs but few, if any, institutions to display their shame. In India, I couldn’t find a museum that place any emphasis on the British colonial period, despite it being an important part of their past. In history museums across Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, I’m treated to a series of propaganda that at times slip from the realms of ridicule into the chasm of comedy.
All of which is why I am grateful to discover the existence of this little museum in Japan. From reading some of the other reviews, I am also pleasantly surprised to learn that there are actually organised school trips to this place, even if those particular reviews didn’t take kindly to the museum.
After paying the cheap entry fee, the polite staff left me to peruse the two levels of the museum at my own pace. Interestingly, the stark contrast in the state and facilities of this museum as compared to the lauded atomic museum nearby speak volumes on its popularity with the country’s administration. Nevertheless, this place still strives to educate with its few prop displays and tons and tons of information, half of which is fluently translated to English. The tone of the information might be a tad biased and accusing, but it’s easy to tune that out and focus on the content itself.
All in all, I had an enriching experience here and would highly recommend this museum to anyone interested to learn minute details in the inconvenient truths of war.
