Started with fun herb garden tour, we were taught Peranakan history, tradition and food. Different from Malay food we thought we knew, it’s very mild gentle and kind in ingredients and cooking method. It’s so organic, natural coloring and nothing artificial but created such unique delicious flavors. Will come back again.

This restaurant serves only Malay cuisine as the hostess Christina informed us as we took our seats. The food is absolutely delicious and the spices were toned down on our request. The Nasi Goreng Paprik was soothing...fried rice with a chicken stew with veggies, very light on the stomach. Serving sizes are large so we had to pack the second dish Lobak...fried tofu and veggies wrapped in bean curd sheets. Christina also runs cooking classes in the restaurant. A friendly person, she shared her travels to India. The ambience is unique resembling the interiors of an orthodox Malay residence. Full Mark's for food, ambience, hospitality and very reasonably priced dishes. A must visit restaurant in KL.

This is what we would call a hidden gem in Bukit Bintang area. The place is quiet and setting is awesome. Service is personal and food is customized to taste. So happy that we found this place on trip advisor. Ordered Nasi Goreng Paprik and Lobak. Both were better than our expectation. Thank you Christine.

We were a group of 6 and this was our first visit to Sarang Cookery. It opens before noon and closes at 930pm. So if you are planning dinner, come early as this is not one you can hang out till midnight.

The food served is nyonya and there are many choices from the menu. We tried the nasi ulam, several chicken, fish and prawn dishes. To be honest, the food was ok but would not rate the taste as outstandingly nyonya. However, the nasi ulam was beautifully presented and was an eye catching dish. No alcohol is served here but the true Malaysian drinks are available - serai, kedondong and calamansi which were nice. The sago gila melaka and cendol were not so!

The layout of the restaurant is strangely bare and would appeal to those who want a quick meal without the trappings. Service was ok and some dishes arrived much later than the first few, so that threw us off a bit.

I understand that this place offers cooking classes and may appeal to foreigners wanting to learn more about nyonya cooking.

I will this place give it a 3 ⭐️

Four of us booked on the course and we were the full class, we had excellent demonstrations of what to do for each of the dishes and then we all did it with the watchful instructor making sure that even the most inexperienced chef couldn't mess it up. We each made three dishes plus the rice, we had some of it at the end of the class and took the rest away. Great fun.

If that sounds like an odd title, it's because you spend a lot of time pounding your ingredients with a very heavy pestle and mortar. I was amazed at the results - my rendang actually tasted like the real thing - only better. I always thought I could cook almost anything with a good recipe book, but our teacher (Ezeh, I think) really taught us how to prepare our ingredients property - and that the hard work really is worth it. There were three of us and two Korean girls (five would be the maximum you could have in a class) and we had a ball. We each had our own table, equipment and ingredients. First we watched Ezeh demonstrate the method, then we went to our own tables and started work. The dishes vary depending on the day - we made nasi lemak, chicken rendang, two sambals - one with hard boiled eggs in it. What we couldn't eat we took home. We were provided with water (which we needed) - chilled with lemon - aprons (which we definitely needed) and we didn't need to wash up. A young man took care of that (and also helped this old lady pound her onions (and garlic, chillis, galangal, ginger, lemon grass and candle nuts).) Worth every penny - and the amazing thing was that it was easy once you knew what you were doing, but without the tuition I don't think you stand a chance of producing anything that good on your own.

I wanted to get an insight of Malaysian cooking while visiting Malaysia for the first time and found this site here on Trip Advisor.
I booked weeks in advance and then reconfirmed by email with Christina when I arrived.
This by far was MY highlight of my trip! A 4-hour class which first started with a short history of the people and culture that make up the Country. Then a stroll into the small garden of herbs and vegetables.
Next up two the second floor where our Instructor Ish welcomed me with a smile, a station, and an apron.
She demonstrated the first dish and we got to sample her dish before she let us recreate it at our station. Going back and forth and answering questions or just giving positive encouragement at my attempts.
We did 4 dishes in total this way. Watching her first, up close to watch each step and then back to my station for an attempt to replicate her amazingly delicious dishes via recipes printed out for all the students.
By the time the class was over, all my dishes were put in containers for me to take with me.
This was an amazing experience for me. Learning new herbs combinations that make up this style of cooking opened my palette to new flavors and aromas.
The learning environment was clean and spacious. The Instructor was very friendly which made me feel very comfortable. Her teaching style was on point and she moved through each dish with just the right amount of time.
I recommend anyone who might be interested in a cooking class while in Kuala Lumpur to visit their website to find a session to plug into.

- Rating: ambiance 5/10, price 8.5/10, food 8.5/10
- Recommendations: Nasi Ulam is very nice mix of veggies and herbs. Ayam Pongteh, Kerabu Mangga, Cincalok Eggs, Angel Beans with Sotong is definite do not miss! And selection of kuih is also pretty good. But avoid Belanda Fish (sea bass) as it is too sweet for my liking.

Pros:
- Varieties of delicious n authentic Malaysian food
- Spacious n clean dining area
- Friendly staff
- Price was affordable
- They also offer cooking classes

Cons:
- Hard to spot from the main road
- Average ambience; common dining hall n decorations
- Parking in front of restaurant is limited
