I like attending local plays whenever I travel, and was very happy to be able to catch this show one free evening.
We took a Grab car over to Arts Above, and were a little lost as to which shoplot the theatre was situated. Fortunately a quick phone call to the number listed was enough to direct our driver accordingly. The ground floor is the Bureau of Revenue, with a very helpful guard helping lost visitors up the elevator to the penthouse.
Trekking to this place felt like an adventure as it is off the beaten track, but you will be well rewarded with the interior of Arts Above. Very Instagram worthy!
The play itself is interesting. Set in Japan, we were impressed by the Filipino cast who performed in believable Japanese accents. As we were the only foreigners in the audience, I'd recommend this visit to those seeking an authentic local experience. Go before the masses hears of this place :-)

I found there was no listing yet for this place so I tried to fill it the best I could. This is in the Penthouse of a building which has been converted into a theater for small, intimate plays. There is also a workshop area, a coffee shop, an art gallery and soon they told me, a gift shop. Hope someone can help me fix the categories. I went there to watch a friend who was performing in the play HAPPINESS IS A PEARL. The venue is quite big with the theater itself looking like a ballroom with original wood, fixtures and designs transplanted from an old antique house that was demolished. It probably can sit 75-15 depending on the kind of stage of play as chairs can be added and removed. Kinda reminded me of the theaters in Venice which were old manors converted into a venue. There is a workshop room for acting classes, a coffee shop [which had pretty tasty items incidentally], and soon a gift shop. There is also stairs that lead to a huge attic that is also an art gallery which has very eclectic collections, apparently updated every 3-4 weeks so it bears watching. The venue is targeted for thespians who want unusual or more experimental productions. We are not talking West-end or Broadway or even off-Broadway. These are small productions and while the actors may not be big names, the material can be pedigreed. HAPPINESS was based on a Palanca Award-winning short play and I believe their next production is also from the same author. This was an unusual discovery and I found it a gem hidden in a nondescript venue. Hopefully they become more successful. The venue apparently is also the new home of ARTISTS PLAYGROUND which mounts the productions [they had a much smaller venue before]. Your stay depends on what you plan to do and how long the productions are. The one I watched was a one hour play, I spent maybe 20-30 minutes in the art gallery and hanged in the coffee shop for another half hour with friends.
