The review is going to be unfair. We went to visit the museum and found out it was closed. We did visit one of the cemeteries on the grounds .There was lots of unmarked graves of patients . We did drive around the grounds there were lots of cool buildings on the grounds . Would have loved to see the museum.

Visited only a portion of the museum however we did participate in the 2 hour Asylum walking tour. George Eberts, the tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Fun afternoon!

The museum is housed in the old insane asylum - and the four-story red brick building is well worth the short trip up the hill. It's everything you imaged an insane asylum from 100 years ago should look like! They have a nice interpretive area that explains the history of the grounds and residents.
The art museum is top-notch, with exhibits that rotate regularly. Ohio University bought the grounds and buildings (which will keep the buildings from disrepair) and university officials and administrators have offices there. Which is, well, sort of ironic.

Gorgeous architecture with a rough past. Hopefully they will get to expand the museum more so there is more to view. There was only one exhibit open when were were there. It would be nice to be able to explore the wings and view more of the old space. The Ron Kroutel exhibit was wonderful and well planned.

we love art and we also love architecture, this building is incredible!...the actual museum real estate is small compared to the massive building..it once served as a sanitarium...would love to explore every inch of it, but the guy @ the desk said that is not offered...it seems like such a waste to hamper the history of this remarkable structure...there is no cost, however donations are accepted...

The exhibit area itself was a bit small. The front two rooms offer a background on the building, while the back first floor room held the exhibit House Proud. It was an interesting photographic exhibit of early settlers and their houses, full of fabulous historic details. There were some other photographs from the 80s of people in their homes. It only takes about 20 minutes. Worth a stop in.

This short drive north of campus is a architectural jewel that has an unsettling past. Though now an art museum, it was a 'sanitarium' for many years and has expansive grounds to explore, including the large cemetery. The restoration process is slow, and there is plenty of decay to be found, if you find that of interest!

The Kennedy Museum of Art displays selections from their wonderful collection of Navaho weavings, which include many spectacular rugs. The weavings are beautifully displayed in several gallery spaces and hallways that are large enough to effectively show even the very large pieces. These works are well worth a special trip to Athens, a city that has much to offer in addition to this gem of a museum.
