Who would have thought that a small town like Alva would have such an amazing museum. It is in an old two story hospital. Every room has a theme is artistically filled with artifacts. It is so big and winding that you get lost roaming around.
An energetic lady showed us around. She immediately took us to the German POW exhibit in the military section. This was fascinating. They showed a movie filmed by a local man hiding in a field of the German POWs marching into the camp with the American guards. There were lots of photos, lots of memorabilia and lots of items that the POWs had made and carved.
Miss Oklahoma 1957 was from Alva and was runner up in the Miss America Pageant. Her crown, gowns and other items are on display in a specially designed room
There were exhibits on the land run, sod houses, home interiors, doctor and dental offices, the hospital, barber shop, beauty parlor, dolls, quilts, laundry, antique clothing, drug store, soda fountain, scouting. We spent 3 hours wandering through it. Of course the museum is haunted since it is an old hospital.

Friendly knowledgeable staff. Displays of various times and items. Farm implements, houshold items clothes. Uniforms from the people who served. Many donations from locals,worth a stop.

Saw my Grandmother's Beauty Shop and all the equipment from years ago! I still remember some of it. Display was very well done.

This museum is housed in an old hospital. The interior configuration has not been changed, but each of the rooms now contains exhibits that reflect the area’s history and civic pride. The halls also are lined with displays. There are military exhibits, frontier living displays – and even an old bar (Not operational!). This a nice way to get the flavor of early life in Oklahoma. Oh, don’t forget to ask about the ghosts!

This museum is housed in the old hospital each of the old rooms is set up so you can view something different. One of the most unique rooms in the POW camp room. Alva was home to a World War II POW camp ( that camp was located at what is now the fairgrounds, the original water tower still stands). Some of the prisoners carved a huge eagle and sculpture, its pretty impressive. If you are visiting northwest Oklahoma make it a point to stop by and walk through the museum, also ask to see the old firetruck, I think its from the late 1920's or early 1930's.

This museum brought tears to my eyes! Seriously! So much history in one place! I only had a couple of hours to visit and didn't get to see everything so I'll definitely have to go again. A must see if you're in Alva! Or even if you're not! Worth a road trip for sure!

Looks small, but has quite a bit inside! There us alot of history in the area, and I was impressed with the exhibits. They have separate rooms for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the history of the building as a hospital, the area was a World War II POW camp for Nazis, old outfits and furniture, the university, etc. Very well worth the trip if you are in the area for the Little Sahara, Great Salt Plains, Alabaster Caverns, or a NWOSU event!

Alva was the site of a Prisoner of War camp during WWII and it housed some of the worst Nazi prisoners that we captured. It makes sense because Alva is so isolated, there is nothing for miles in any direction. They have excellent displays of WWI and WWII uniforms and accouterments as well as early twentieth century every day items. They also have items related to the Cowboy and Wild West era. They have an extensive firearms collection, mostly WWII G.I. trophies, a plethora of Japanese rifles. I get the impression that their curator does not have a clue when it comes to firearms because there is example after example of near worthless Japanese Arisakas displayed prominently, while what should be the gem of their collection, a .32 caliber single action COlt model 1873 in pristine condition is stuck in the bottom of a display so you have to crawl on the floor to get a good look at it. Their Christmas decorations obscured the displays as well.

The museum is set in a old hospital built in 1932. What I liked most was what it portrayed of the history of the area, of which I knew nothing. It also had some items of interest for sale.

We fully enjoyed our visit to this museum. The staff (all volunteers, i believe) was helpful and informative. There are numerous rooms, as this was formerly a hospital. Therefore, pretty much the entire history of Alva, as well as much of the county, was covered.
Students would learn much about medicine, heroism, the land run and everyday life in Oklahoma here. The schoolhouse, an annex to the main part of the museum, was a great feature. Alva is fortunate to have such a resource.
If I had a complaint it would be that there are a number of collections which crowd some rooms. One which comes to mind is the "Gone With the Wind" plate collection. Given the spacious setting it seemed odd to find so many crowded rooms and often this was a result of collections.
STILL, that is a minor problem, considering the valued resource the museum is. Thank you for sharing your time with visitors.
