We spotted this place on a little sign as we were driving by and turned around to check it out. This was during October of the pandemic so the museum wasn't open but we were able to enjoy the cemetery. This was such a sad place to discover because the Confederate soldiers buried here were left to die. They were too ill to travel with their regiment because they had measles. Maybe it was better than dying of a gunshot wound, I don't know.

The rest stop provided a quiet, private spot w/electric & pavilion. The grounds were well kept with trash disposal. Keep partying, what else can be said about it, Reba?

This is a great little museum. Something for everyone from early pioneer days and the Civil War in Indian Territory to Reba McEntyre exhibit. On the property is a Confederate Cemetery. A little hard to find as it sits back from the road a little and as many times as I have passed it, I never knew it was there. We plan to go back when we have a little more time. It's worth a visit.

I love county museums and I wish they got more funding. There were items and information from the battle itself. There is a skeleton of a baby dinosaur. In the second room, there is an exhibit of Lane Frost among other things. They had one of those old hair curling things that takes a second to sink in what it was for because it looks like some method of electrocution. It's the second time I have seen one and I don't know what they are called. The cemetery is kind of small and there are gravestones that are illegible or nonexistent. Those that are buried that have been identified have a newer head stone providing the name. There were a couple of times I thought I was standing on a grave with no marker at all. Nice little stop on a road trip and probably took about 1 hour and 15 minutes at most.

This little museum is hiding within an unassuming building nestled in a Confederate cemetery. The graves here contain remains of soldiers but the building houses displays from that time period forward. There are life displays along with info on the actual people who are portrayed. There are hundreds of individual items carefully catalogued and connected to their relevant place in the local history. There is a beautiful quilt displayed that notes the 50 states with their capitals marked and a US map with the states quilted in. It was a community effort and shows great love of country. Everything was organized and well displayed. There was even a humerous 'exhibit' of miscellaneous items left behind by visitors.

The road sign reads, Confederate Cemetery and Info Center. I like old cemeteries, so I decided to stop. This place is a rest stop, information center, and a museum. They have fun souvenirs and postcards for sale and lots of things to see. If you're a history buff, you must visit.
A short walk from the museum is the Confederate Cemetery. It is small and well-kept and doesn't take long to read all of the headstones. The grounds are picturesque with lots of shade trees, picnic tables, and a pavilion. There are also public restrooms which were nice and clean. This is a perfect place for a picnic. Along with the cemetery, there is a church, originally built in the Boggy Bend community, a log cabin, and house from the 1800's.
After touring the grounds, I went back inside the museum where I signed the guestbook and enjoyed talking to Cathy. She was a great source of local information and a pleasure to talk to.
This is a beautiful place to spend the day and take in local history. All of these things are offered free to the public, so there is no excuse why you shouldn't make this a stop on your next trip through Atoka, Oklahoma.

We had driven through Atoka a number of times and I had never noticed this museum. I discovered it on the internet and this time I was seeking it out. It is right on Hwy 69 about a mile north of town on the east side of the road. It has a tiny sign that you don’t notice as you zip by. This is a really nice museum; spacious, uncluttered and well laid out. Like all small town museums, there were rooms decorated like an old time kitchen, general store, etc. There was a small battle fought here during the Civil War. They have a wonderful Civil War exhibit with dioramas, numerous artifacts and displays. I was impressed by a small, reconstructed dinosaur that was excavated nearby. Reba McEntire is from the area and donated several items of clothing she had worn on stage. There was also an interesting Clyde Barrow display from the shootout in nearby Stringtown. (The last time we were through here we stopped at the Stringtown highway marker describing this shootout). They have a Tommy gun, items from the car Clyde stole, even bullets pulled from the body of a policeman that was killed.
The entire area is a commemorative site. The old Butterfield Stage Line route is marked. They have moved in an old church and a log cabin. Behind this is the Confederate Cemetery, the only one on Oklahoma. It has several graves of soldiers killed in the battle. We spent an enjoyable hour browsing through everything. The ladies that run it were very friendly and knowledgeable.
Please note that the map for this listing does not show the location correctly. The museum is a mile north of Atoka.
