If you saw the series Wild Wild Countey, and you’re all n the area, you should watch the historical footage of the town and then drop by. The town seems on the way to “ghost” status now. On a Sunday afternoon, we saw only a few people. No amenities like stores or restaurants, no gas stations. But you can imagine the maroon robed Rajneeshis roaming the town and deciding that a takeover wouldn’t be all bad for the local economy.

A flock of wild turkeys roamed about pretty fearlessly, and yellow gold hills stretched away into smoky skies. The memorial is beside the post office, and commemorates the efforts of townspeople who fought the Rajneeshi takeover of their community. What people in town now think of the show remains a mystery to me, since there was no one to ask. The Antelope Cafe is closed - permanently? - and a posting on the town bulletin board mentions that all 4 city council seats and the office of mayor are available to fill. It’s too bad the town has not capitalized or n the interest n this odd chapter in Oregon history. A wooden cutout of the Bhagwan and some postcards could be a nice start!

Not much to see, the old school is neat we played at the playground there. A couple other building in town to look at on your way past. The Post office in not worth looking at but you may as well stop for the 2 seconds it takes,

This is one of oregon ghost towns to visit. Not really a ghost town. Some people still here. But some amazing buildings here that are old, broken down and abandoned. This was a great stop on the way to shaniko. Beautiful. And got great pics.

In the mid-80s a religious group from India/California bought thousands of acres outside of Antelope. The Bhagwam Shree Rajneesh was the leader of the red robed followers.

The influx took over the local government and changed the name of the town to Rajneesh for awhile. The Postal Service never recognized that change.

The Rajneesh had a bunch of Rolls Royces he was chauffeured around in. We initially passed through the area in that time on our motorcycle. We knew a goofy psychiatrist who studied with the group (and later plead guilty to Medicaid Fraud himself).

But the group ran into troubles when it committed the only bio terror attack in the US by trying to temporarily poison voters in The Dalles with Salmonella so they could take over the county.

The cult leader that lead that move was tried later when health authorities figured out what the problem was. Rajneesh was deported to India for immigration fraud. The cult's buildings later burned in a range fire and that land is now a Christian Youth Camp.

Some locals erected a nice bronze plaque at the foot of the flagpole outside the trailer/post office celebrating the victory of the locals who lived through this siege. With a suitable quote from Edmund Burke warning that all it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to keep silent.

An interesting slice of rural history.
