Well busy street. With many local and also country shops. Beautiful people walking. Shame it is very bad to park in the nearby streets.

This is definitely worth a visit, especially the two blocks or so near Allen's Boots. Allen's boots is pretty amazing. There are some art shops nearby, and a bakery around the corner from the Welcome to Austin Mural that has the best macaron I've ever tasted.

I went around Sixth (6th) Street, and I also wanted to see Congress Avenue. Congress Avenue was like the Beverly Hills of Austin. I saw many wealthy stores and a lot of very fine restaurants. There were also quite a few nightclubs. It was very tough to find parking, but I found free parking during the daytime hours on a side street.

We were recommended to stroll along the shops and sites of Austin's South Congress Avenue and we were not disappointed. It was fun to pop into the funky shops (and we did support the local economy) and see the murals. We had a nice snack break at Perla's and enjoyed sitting in the courtyard on a beautiful day.

My Airbnb place was near South Congress, so I made a few trips by car here. There are lots of restaurants and boutique shops on the avenue, a great place to shop and eat. I made a stop at the Big Top Candy Shop on South Congress Avenue as it was on my list of places to visit.

Street with newer and older restaurants and shops. Ideal place to buy cowboy boots and hats. And be sure to make a quick stop at the Continental Club

We enjoyed a little shopping on Congress Avenue. We loved going to the Paperwork Store, the Big Top Candy Store, as well as visiting the I Love You So Much Mural. This is a great place to shop around and enjoy the scenery!!

I have to say that South Congress (SoCO) was my biggest disappointment in Austin. I thought we were going to love this area….not much to see or do. One of our tour guides did tell us that many places did not make it after COVID. Still glad we walked both sides of the avenue, but was definitely a one and done.

A bit too far to walk from our hotel, so we took the Number 1 bus from Guadaloupe and 4th, and got off in front of the iconic cowboy boot store, Allens Boots. Well worth a visit! Then had lunch at Guero's. Casual family atmosphere, great service, and the largest and best burrito I've ever eaten. There was also lots of fun shopping, including an Hermes store! This area of Austin is a definite must! We loved it.

This is a lovely area of Austin
It is a very long street with loads of independent shops and eateries
The art/poster shop is so worth a visit as it sells great art, t shirts and other trinkets
If your after cowboy boats thus is the place to purchase them
This is also the area to see numerous murals
I suggest you start at the top of the street and walk down
As for restaurants there is do much choice to cater for anyone
It is a very busy and popular area
It felt very safe
A good trendy neighbourhood to visit

Looking for upscale hotels walking distance to SoCo. Downtown seems full of high rises. Price is not a factor

There are several on or just off of S. Congress, mostly boutique hotels. The exception is the South Congress Hotel, a full-service hotel right in the middle of the S.Congress activity. Boutique hotels include the Austin Motel, a 50s style motel that has been renovated; the Hotel San Jose; a motel renovated to a modern rock style; Kimber Modern, about 1 block off of S.Congress; and Hotel St.Cecelia, about 2 blocks off of S.Congress.
There are a few B&Bs and any number of short-term rentals, often homes, that are closer than the downtown hotels.
Other places listed in earlier responses are NOT on S.Congress - Driskill, Embassy Suites, Staybridge, Wood Spring and Omni.

Every Wed-Sunday there is free live music at Guero's on S Congress. Every Sunday there is free music at Jo's Coffee shop, just down the street from Gueros. At various times of the year, you can find free music at auditorium shores. If you google "free music in Austin" you can find all kinds of cool, free, fun stuff in Austin.

When I went, I had trouble finding parking. There is the back angled parking mentioned, but it was all full when I got there--it can get very crowded! I was able to find parking on a street parallel a few blocks back, but you might have difficulty if this is too much walking for you.

If you get there early, you can park in the lot next to the newspaper building on the south side of the bridge.
