The adult Disney with shops, restaurants, galleries, bakeries, bookstores, finally, all very beautiful and romantic. Just walking around the city and appreciating the houses and buildings is already gratifying. The Christmas celebration is also famous.

Having an afternoon free while in Washington, we took an Uber to Alexandria and had a beautiful time exploring Old Town.
Such interesting and unique architecture.
It is easy to walk and wander, with lots to see including cute shops and restaurants.

This was our first time to Alexandria, and Virginia! We absolutely loved the charm the city had to offer. The clean streets and colorful houses make it such a nice area to walk around. The downtown historic area is very walkable and can access anything on foot. We thought street parking would be difficult but we no issues finding parking. We stayed in an Air BnB off Henry, we didn't want to leave! The trees down King st are all lit up at night, it's truly beautiful. The Trolly they have is free and runs up and down king street all day, it's so convenient! I highly recommend a visit to Alexandria, it would be the perfect weekend getaway for couples.

always something fresh and new when we visit it seems....a lively neighborhood both in the daytime and in the evenings...nice hotels; interesting shops; and the choices for restaurants abound...there is a free trolley if you need help walking the length of the street...

Take the subway, yellow line, and get off at King Street station. From here you can follow the trolley through King Street. This trolley is free and you can descend on any marked and then climb again. Very nice place!

Parking here is messy and confusing. Got a parking ticket too $40. It’s a run down place. Virginia is not worth it. Never be coming back to Virginia.

This charming Old Town was a wonderful way to perambulate and take in the fascinating architecture. There are numerous small shops, great restaurants, and historical sites throughout the Old Town, which abuts the gorgeous wharf/waterfront. The pathways are lined with cobblestone, which adds to the quaintness of the area. Everything is clean and well-maintained, and everyone here is very friendly. At night, fairy lights are strung through the trees, which we absolutely loved. The row houses are lovely. You could spend days just in the Old Town.

Beautiful walk to take and explore different parts of this old town, the square, the marina, the commercial premises. It is a very picturesque walk! There are places to eat, ice cream parlors and cafes. With the snow as a frame, the town looked beautiful!

Having lived in Virginia for many, many years, Old Town Alexandria was a regular jaunt for us. From retail shopping, gift shops, incredible restaurants, its historic homes, building architecture, antique shops, art galleries, walking-friendly streets and alleys, cobblestone streets, friendly people, easy parking, cleanliness, museums, wharf, docks and parks make this unique 1700s town not just a historical landmark in American history, but a fascinating day excursion romp of enjoyment. One can easily start with breakfast, enjoy lunch, have a fine dinner and wrap up with a nightcap in a full day’s visit. The town is full of historical locations with the likes of Gadsby’s Tavern, Christ Church, the Torpedo Factory, and much, much more. Virginia is full of historical places, but this is one location where you can soak in most of what the State has to offer in one fell swoop. Not to mention it’s a hop, step and jump from our Nations Capitol. I’m sure this will be a fascination and enjoyable visit for everyone young and old.

I highly recommend Old Town Alexandria for a multiple night stay. Taking the metro from King Street Metro Station in Old Town Alexandria to all the historical sights in Washington DC is easy and reasonable. King Street is fun and interesting. Walk down King Street to the Potomac water front. There are many good restaurants. I loved the ambiance of the water front. We were there five nights and there are still many things we want to go back and experience that we did not get to do on this trip.

We are looking to stay in the area that has the most shops, restaurants & bars within walking distance. Is that the Waterfront? I noticed that there weren't many hotels in that area. Thank you for your help!

yes that is the best area to stay if you wish to enjoy old town Alex. the embassy suites is a 10 minute walk down king street to the waterfront

I'm trying to make a dinner reservation in May for a Monday evening after touring Mount Vernon. I've looked at Gadsby's which is closed Mondays. I've looked at the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant which closes on Mondays at 5 pm. I've looked also at Humingbird...closed Mondays. I would like a fairly nice restaurant with great food and ideally special atmosphere to make it worth our while to travel there. Any suggestions??

You have many options. If it's a sunny warm day you might want to Uber or taxi to the ferry and enjoy a fabulous journey by water. The ferry docks right in the harbor in Old Town.
If you want another choice you can connect to the metro right as you disembark from the train. The metro will take you to King street and then you can hop on the trolley.
We usually combine ferry, metro, trolley and Uber in our visits. The DC area is user friendly for people who do not want to walk miles. The many tour buses with "on and off" privileges offer another way to visit the city and surrounding attractions without extensive walking.
If you decide to make this a weekend trip, I recommend the "Alexandrian" Hotel. It has a central location and terrific service.

We will be staying in Crystal City (about 20 minutes from Old Town). We will not have a car. Is it worth it to pay for transportation to go there? Looking for things to do at night after sightseeing in DC. We will be there Sunday-through Tuesday in the summer.

Yes take Metro. If you don't have one, you will need to buy a one time $5 metrorail farecard, in addition to loading money on it. Keep farecard for future visits. Well worth it.

There are several places up and down the street. It parks at the east end and then stops at different corners. I picked up s bunch of people in front of my hotel also.

Has anyone had a good experience with a hotel, B & B or other lodging in Old Town? We would need a place for three women (no longer young but fit and young at heart) for two nights in mid-summer. Thanks.

Hotel Monaco is wonderfully classic and quaint! They also have an attached restaurant with a stellar menu and elite customer service. Definitely my recommendation!!

HI! If we take the Amtrak to Alexandria, is the free trolley within a few blocks of the Amtrak station?

The trolley for Old Town is just outside of the Metro Station (not a block away... directly in front of the King street station). It looks like a bus stop there is a sign above it indicating it is the Old Town Trolley. So, when you come out of the Amtrak station turn left and you will see the Metro Station the Trolley stop is right there in front of the Metro

All of the restaurants and bars will be open and some of the shops will still be open after 6 pm. If the weather is nice, it is very pleasant to walk around and to see the historic houses and to walk down to the water. Old Town has a very active night life. If you have children with you, many of the ice cream shops will be open as well.
