Rode from central Washington to Mount Vernon and it is well sign posted
The woodland sections are nice but too much runs next to busy dual carriage way.
Other than Alexandria there is nowhere of interest enroute.
Some have commented on it being busy but we found it fine

The trail itself is beautifully situated along the Potomac River from Roosevelt Island to Mount Vernon, some 17 miles south. Sections of the trail are in rough shape, but the National Park Service is working on restoration. Beware, though, of extremely aggressive bikers and runners along the way.

This trail is paved with some boardwalk. Most of the trail runs oolong the Potomac River. It is well marked with a couple of tricky sections where it joins up with some roads in Alexandria. You can ride on any type of bike but there are some bumps and roots, so a road bike is not ideal.

Hire bikes available in old town Alexandria - off harbour square - shop with large stock or hire racks.Free trolley bus from the metro station (bus substitute at the moment). Over a half of the cycle route is safe but next to a busy and noisy highway, out of sight of the river - not a sceic ride. A lot of tree roots rise up the tarmac - go steady, especially with kids. Once there, a really interesting and well ran site - read a bit of Washington's military and political history beforehand, to get the best out of this. Take the house tour - well worth it.

Eine Radtour (oder Jogging-Runde) auf dem Mount Vernon Trail entlang des Potomac Rivers kann ich jedem Reisenden in DC nur wärmsten empfehlen! Es ist ein toller Ausgleich zur klassischen "Sightsseing-Memorials-Runde". Mit den "Capital Bikeshare"- Rädern ist der Mount Vernon Trail super abzufahren. Ich bin bspw. von der Theodore Roosevelt Island bis nach Alexandria geradelt und hatte einen wundervollen Tag und konnte DC mal auf einer anderen Art und Weise auf mich wirken lassen. Zudem sieht man auch viele Sehenswürdigkeiten entlang des Flusses. Ein weiteres Highlight ist zudem der Airport Park, von welchem aus man Flugzeuge beobachten kann, die auf dem Ronald Reagan Airport landen.

How many people know the Mount Vernon Trail really exists? It is a 17-mile-long path that stretches along the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Northern Virginia between Rosslyn and George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. As part of U.S. Bike Route 1, the Potomac Heritage Trail and the East Coast Greenway, it opened in 1972 as a gravel path and was subsequently expanded and paved. Today, it is a popular trail for walkers, runners and cyclists that affords panoramic views of the Potomac River and the skyline and historic monuments of Washington DC, access via several bridges across the river to the National Mall and connections to other area hiker/biker routes. We became aware of the trail via a tour guide at Mount Vernon. It connects the easternmost portions of Arlington County, the city of Alexandria and Fairfax County and parallels the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the western bank of the Potomac River. Most of the northern half of the trail is open with sweeping views of the river and Washington DC while the southern eight miles below Alexandria is largely wooded with limited river views until you reach Mount Vernon. It also takes visitors along the west side of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Gravelly Point, where there are views of arriving and departing airplanes. Among other trails that connect with the Mount Vernon Trail are the East Coast Greenway, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath and the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail.

Oh this trail isn’t fun for anyone. Walkers and Cyclists alike abhor this trail. It’s too narrow, so sharing is a problem. Tripping over the roots and falling into sunken holes is an actual hazard on this trail. If you’re a cyclist, prepare to rattle your teeth out and lose grip on our bars.

As an avid runner, this is one of my most favourite trails in the US. I've traveled from NYC to San Francisco and run many rail trails in between, but the Mount Vernon Trail holds a special piece of my heart. It's beauty and ease of use can't be beat. It's a popular trail, so there are usually other runners on it, but not so many that it feels crowded; just enough to make this solo female runner feel safe. It has a varied terrain which is nice, but if you start up at Mount Vernon the trail is mostly downhill, which makes for a fun out and back run. Alternatively, you can start at Mount Vernon and run to King Street which would be great for a long run (it's about 9ish miles). Overall, it's a great trail and perfect for any type of runner or walker and the view along to Potomac is incredible.

This is a great trail to walk on. There are miles of paved paths there. It is also connected to Theodore Roosevelt Island and several bridges across the Potomac River to the National Mall.

Very nice drive along the Potomac River - plenty of places to pull over to walk, ride bikes or picnic

Do people usually ride their bikes to the trail or is there parking sufficient for people who want to leave their car at the end of the trail for when they return? I have a bike I would like to transport to the trail on my car, and my buddy will be renting a bike. So we’re looking for a parking lot near the capital bike share. Is there such a thing? Where is it located? Thank you!

Yes, there are quite a few options depending on day....tons of street parking on weekends...might have to do a few loops to find it in Alexandria and Arlington but possible...free rates vary wildly so be careful....Saturday is not always free....some great parking lots in Arlington free after 4pm near multiple rideshares

Sorry, no but other walks are possible heavy traffic and be careful not to get onto a no sidewalk route

My wife and I are planning on riding the trail for the first time. We live in PA and plan on bringing our hybrid bikes. Any recommendations on where to stay near the trail, maybe at a midpoint? We would like to ride 1/2 the trail one day and the other 1/2 the next day.

You can stay in Old Town Alexandria or in the Crystal City area. There are lots of choices of inns and hotels. Both are pretty close to the trail (just blocks.)

This looks like a great place to watch planes at DCA, is the pathway accessible from the Crystal City hotels and is it safe enough to take my 12 year old to the park to watch planes?

It is very close to the Crystal City hotels, we biked over but it was close enough to walk over. The trail seemed very safe to me. As far as watching planes that I am not sure. I don't recall seeing many when we rode the trail from Crystal City to Mount Vernon but I do remember passing the airport and there was a path off the trail into the airport or so it seemed, we didn't take it.
