It is said to be a 10-minute walk from the east exit of JR Matsudo Station, but since it is on a hill, I was encouraged to take a taxi, and arrived for just 500 yen. It is the most famous place in Matsudo, and the air is clear and very pleasant. It makes me think of the time when Tokugawa Yoshinobu's younger brother, Prince Akitake, lived here. There was a tea ceremony here that day, so it was worth the trip from Kansai.

Tojo Residence is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. It is the residence where Tokugawa Akitake, who would have become the 16th Shogun, spent half his life. There are 9 buildings and 23 rooms, all connected by corridors, making it a rather cluttered structure. Tojo Residence Garden is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, but it is mostly grass and looks rather plain. Usually, it is viewed from the veranda of Tojo Residence, but on days ending in zero, you can go down into the garden to view it. The admission ticket to Tojo Residence features a photograph of Tojo Residence taken in 1898 by Yoshinobu (the 15th Shogun and Akitake's half-brother). It made the Shogun feel close to home.

水戸藩最後の藩主である徳川昭武によって建てられた別邸で、現在は国の重要文化財の一つであるが、一般にも開放されており、建物内を拝観することが出来る。
明治時代に建てられた建物であるため、江戸時代に建てられた屋敷と少し異なる雰囲気を醸し出している。廊下など、ところどころに架けられた洋式のランプがその特徴の一つだろう。加えて、何度か増改築を繰り返しているようで、建物自体がまるで迷路のようになっている。さらに廊下は狭く、人がやっとすれ違えるくらいの広さしかない。他の拝観客とのすれ違いには互いに譲り合いながら利用したい。また、各座敷の鴨居が低く、背が高い人は頭をぶつける恐れがあるので、注意しながら観覧した方がいいだろう。
室内の写真撮影は特に制限は無いようだが、前述の通り廊下を始め狭い箇所が多いため、三脚等の使用は控えた方がいい。各座敷や展示物の説明はほぼ日本語のみであるが、英語などの多言語での説明が読み取れるQRコードがあるため、それを利用するといいだろう。
常磐線等の鉄道は基より、幹線道路からもやや離れているところにあるため、街中の喧騒をほとんど感じない。往年の時代に思いを馳せながら、庭園を眺めてゆったりと過ごすのもいいかもしれない。

Since it was built in the Meiji era (1868-1912), it has a slightly different atmosphere from the mansion built in the Edo era (1603-1868). One of the features of the building is the Western-style lamps installed in various places, such as in the hallways. In addition, the building itself is like a maze, as it seems to have been extended and remodeled several times. In addition, the corridors are so narrow that two people can pass each other. It's best to use the hallways while passing other visitors, and to use the hallways while giving way to each other. Also, the low doorways in each room may cause tall visitors to bump their heads, so it is best to view the rooms with caution.
There seems to be no restriction on taking pictures inside the rooms, but as mentioned above, it's best to refrain from using a tripod or similar equipment because of the many narrow areas, including the corridors. Explanations of the rooms and exhibits are almost exclusively in Japanese, but there are QR codes that allow visitors to read explanations in English and other languages.
Since the museum is located somewhat far from the main road as well as the Joban Line and other railroads, you'll hardly feel the hustle and bustle of the city. It may be a good idea to spend a relaxing time looking at the garden while thinking back to the days of yesteryear.

幕末から維新にかけて、幕府名代として渡仏する将軍徳川慶喜の弟、徳川昭武と使節団。随行員には渋沢栄一の姿も。よく小説では田町での勝海舟・西郷隆盛の会談にて、西郷から「どこぞの国が江戸を焼き払うとか…」と幕府の構えを問われとか…。戸定庭には静かに各部屋に心遣いが欄間で表現が施されており、客間で客の幸福を願う「蝙蝠(コウモリ)」欄間(蝙蝠の蝠の字は"福"と同音で幸福を意味する)など徳川昭武公の優しさが、うかがえます。また、フランスから持ち帰った最新式カメラで徳川慶喜と供に撮影で赴く松戸各地の風景は、ファインダーから写る「新時代へ先駆け」で"未来志向の松戸市"ビジョンの象徴として連想できます。

松戸駅から戸定邸への入口に大きな駐車場が設けられた。また邸宅を囲んで広がる公園には紅梅が咲き、高台にはあずまやが出来眺めは素晴らしい。

Tojo House was a serene and stunning historical site to visit while in Matsudo, Chiba. It’s a brilliant visual of a home designed to enjoy nature. On a clear day, you can even see Mt. Fuji from the parlor!
While they did not have a tour available in English (and we did not have it as an expectation), the docent was helpful where she could be about directing us. Definitely something to experience!!
