With its majestic proportions it stands out in the busy square where it is located. It is an old Jesuit church. We only saw its exterior because in addition to having to pay to enter, something I prefer to avoid in temples, our time to stay in the city was limited, since we arrived on a cruise ship.

The Cathedral of São Salvador was founded in 1552, being the first in Brazil. The current church is the fourth to be built in the same location. The architecture of the Cathedral is in a general Mannerist style and the cladding of the facade and interior is lime stone imported from Portugal especially for the construction. It has a single nave, a chancel flanked by two small chapels, two more chapels in the transept and others along the nave. The ceiling of the nave has a rich carved decoration with Jesuit symbols, in the center of which there is a large radiant medallion with the IHS monogram. The walls are covered half-height with painted tiles. The floor and altars are made of colored marble, from Portugal and Italy. It has many tombstones, such as that of Mem de Sá (third governor-general of Brazil). The church is very full of rich ornaments of white and purple damask, green and crimson velvet, all with gold screen. Under a marble tombstone on the main altar there is a staircase that served as access to an ancient catacomb.

Beautiful church, the entrance fee is 10 reales, the architecture is incredible, the sacristy is impressive, it is a very beautiful place!

Uma das mais lindas igrejas de Salvador. Tem uma imagem de Jesus que tenho muito apreço pela beleza. E também os altares, tanto os laterais como o central. Imperdível a visita!

Descrevo como emocionante conhecer esta Catedral Basílica do Santíssimo Salvador! Eu amo conhecer igrejas, mas esta contém uma riqueza inexplicável de artes sacras, é uma imensidão de riqueza nos detalhes, que chega a ser impossível não se encantar, independente se o visitante é ou não religioso! A entrada custa apenas 10.00, (fevereiro 2023), e a visita não têm horário para finalizar. Portanto você pode ficar o tempo que desejar admirando, fotografando todas maravilhas que nela há!

Bonita, abre em horários específicos e bem restritos. Não dá pra caminhar na região em frente sem que alguém lhe agarre o braço para colocar uma fitinha do Senhor do Bonfim, que é presente, mas lhe cobram R$20,00 e ainda dizem aceitar pix. Portanto deixe seus braços longe de qualquer pessoa que se aproxime. Um inferno andar nessa região.

The first church in Bahia was completed on this site in 1585 by the Jesuits, but was destroyed during the Dutch invasion. Construction of the current church began in 1657. It’s façade is made of lioz sandstone, all of which was imported from Portugal.
The lateral chapels are decorated with wood-carved altars covered with gold leaf, in Renaissance and Baroque styles. This cathedral is historically and architecturally significant. It is open to the public for a minor fee (R$5, or less than $1 US), and if you are anywhere near here, I strongly suggest that you visit (you will not be disappointed).
The actual name of this church (in English) is Primatial Cathedral Basilica of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
The lateral chapels are decorated with wood-carved altars covered with gold leaf, in Renaissance and Baroque styles. This cathedral is historically and architecturally significant. It is open to the public for a minor fee (R$5, or less than $1 US), and if you are anywhere near here, I strongly suggest that you visit (you will not be disappointed).

Juchée sur une colline surplombant la baie, cette église de style classique se découvre au delà d'une place arborée en pente douce. Sur les grilles qui enserrent l'édifice des milliers de bracelets en tissu colorées sont attachés dans l'espoir de voir se réaliser les voeux intimes des fidèles. Exemple parfait du sincrétisme baianais cette édifice offre deux magnifiques nefs décorées d'azulejos sidérants. Au moment de la messe, les chants des fidèles rythmées par des musiques paiennes, les transes et la ferveur constitue une plongée authentique dans le multi culturalisme de la ville, où les religions se sont mélangées pour une expérience inclusive généreuse. Au dessus de l'autel on trouve un bout de la sainte croix

Maravilhosa, vc paga 5 reais para entrar e vale a pena. Existe uma imponência dentro da igreja, que mesmo quem não é religioso, tem uma sensação diferente. Vale a pena conhecer
