Fantastic local company, whose guides live in the favela and have an amazing knowledge as most have lived there all there lives. Our guide was Carlos, who spoke fluent English some of the best we heard whilst visiting Brazil. The tour was personal and authentic, with just myself, husband and 16 year old son. Carlos was incredibly detailed when explaining about life in the favela his knowledge about history even about England put ours to shame. This was not a tour that was designed to make anyone feel like they were in a goldfish bowl, but one that was respectful of its residents. Many other large companies offer similar tours, but since the guides do not live there, I cannot imagine they offer the same type of service. We stopped for a drink in a couple of places and did not once feel unsafe, the people we did speak with were friendly and were not begging for money like in other areas such as Copacabana, just normal people getting on with everyday life. Amazing artwork in lots of areas brightening up the streets, lots by Wark, It was one of the highlights of our trip to Brazil and I would recommend Carlos to anyone looking at taking a tour instead of a large tour group.

We had a guided tour with Carlos through Rocinha which was great. Carlos speaks fluent English and is very knowledgeable about the area, as he is a local. He is happy to answer your questions. We had a great experience, which felt authentic as it wasn't with a big company. We understood where the proceeds of our ticket money were going to and that it was going to benefit the local community. It is also cheaper than another price were quoted by another company and we had a lot of flexibility as to what time the tour could start. We finished at a kilo buffet which served lovely food. It was all very easy and convenient to organise via WhatsApp.

It was a very personal visit with an opportunity to really see favela life. Rocinha is economically vibrant with proper infrastructure.
Zezinho was very diligent in answering all questions before booking and Carlos who guided us through the streets was a first class guide.
Security - you will be warned by your hotel and others about the dangers of visiting favelas. Rocinha does not fall into that category so long as you go with locals who live in the favela - and you follow all instructions. My 15 yr old son and I felt safer in Rocinha than we did walking around Rio. And Zezinho takes safety very seriously.
I can’t recommend this visit highly enough.

Zezinho’s Favela Adventures of Rocinha was our favorite experience of our 3 week stay in Rio. The experience, unlike other “tours”, is really personal, which we loved and it enables you to really dive into and understand the culture, history and the (social) life in Rocinha. We went for 6 hours and the time just flew by. The start was at the top of favela and we made our way down through the streets and alleys (which felt like a maze). Our guide Malux, who is from and lives in Rocinha, was absolutely lovely and really knowledgeable when it came to the many questions we had.
Another aspect that we really liked is that the tour supports projects within the favela.
Also, the communication and organization with Zezinho was flawless.
Thank you Malux and Zezinho!
We can only recommend the tour and Zezinho/Malux wholeheartedly.

The tour was exactly what we wanted! No human Zoo, just learning about the life, problems but also chances for people living there. Carlos was an amazing guide! We did less walking but more just hanging around in the areas in the favela and listening to everything he tells us in perfect english. He knows all the people since he lives in this favela his entire life. It feels like visiting a friend in a favela. And the money goes to several projects in the favela and gives lots of people the opportunity to earn money in a legal way. We are so relieved that we found this tour and didnt book on bigger websites! It was the most authentic expirience we could ever wish for!
Obrigado!

From the moment I first contacted Favela Adventures the communication and coordination of the tour was excellent. The tour is entirely operated by residents of the favela, which was very important to me when selecting a tour of Rochina. Zezhino did a great job in planning and organizing the tour. He mentioned everything I needed to know in advance, including how to get to the meeting location, how the pricing system works and what I should expect to do for the tour. He also provided information on his charity projects including an English school, a ju-jitsu school, and a DJ school, which he uses some of the money from the tours to fund.
As it got closer to the tour time, Zezhino gave me travel advice for my visit to Rio de Janeiro while also wishing me well-wishes. On the morning of the tour, he reminded me of the instructions to get to the meeting spot (I chose to arrive by subway/metro, but you can easily take an uber to get there if you prefer) as well as instructions on how to find my tour guide, Carlos.
Once I met up with my tour guide, we began the tour with a short introduction followed by a moto-taxi ride to the summit of the favela. The summit has a souvenir shop (which has some of the lowest priced souvenirs within the city of Rio de Janeiro), a bar, and a rooftop with an overlook of the entire favela. It is also the perfect place to take pictures. Carlos did an amazing job explaining how the favela operates. As a resident of Rochina himself, Carlos also is well known by many of the residents of Rochina, which helped make me feel welcome and comfortable. He spoke English well and I understood everything. We also had a good conversation on life in the favela and on culture in general. The tour also included a stop at the Wark Rochina art gallery, an artist whose work has been displayed all over the world. The tour largely went through the alleys and narrow streets of the favela, giving an honest look at what life would be like for residents.
Carlos also made sure we were safe, letting us know when it was safe or not safe to take photos. This is definitely a tour that breaks stereotypes and educates attendees on misconceptions about favelas, as Rochina is a vibrant neighborhood of working-class people and not a war zone as it is often portrayed in the media and YouTube documentaries. The tour ended with a stop at the bottom of the favela at a restaurant that served really good food at affordable prices. Carlos ended the tour by taking us on the bridge with a lookout over the whole favela before walking me back to the subway station.
In addition to Favela tours, Carlos also offers tours of attractions throughout Rio de Janeiro. Carlos is a certified guide with the state tourism agency and he did an amazing job. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is considering visiting Rio de Janeiro. Even if you are hesitant to visit a favela due to safety concerns, do the tour anyway with Carlos. You will survive, you will not be injured or robbed, and it will be worth your time and will be a highlight of your trip. I cannot recommend Favela Adventures more. The Favela Adventures tour was definitely one of my favorite parts of my visit to Rio de Janeiro.

Great solo tour with Zezinho! Very insightful and a great experience. Met at the bottom of the favela and took a bus higher up, before making our way down walking through various parts of the favela. Told me how the medical system works there, how schools work there, sewage and a number of other different things. Met some residents too, chilled and chatted with them a little, stopped at a couple of bars and met more locals and then to end the day, had food at a favela spot too. Loved the whole experience and defo one of the highlights of the trip. Zezinho being a resident is very well informed and is very well known in his community. Showed me a number of things he’s working on to help the community and I hope they all succeed and he leaves a long lasting impression on the community.

We took this Saturday September 3rd 2021.
Before I share my experience, it may make sense to share our perceptions before taking this. So my fiancé and I went for a two-week trip in Brazil visiting São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. During the visit in both cities, while seeing beautiful places, markets, cathedrals, museums, beaches, etc. we both felt that areas in both cities exist that you would not feel safest. In days, you would worry about pickpockets and at nights, you would not wanna go to non-crowded areas alone. This includes, eg Rio’s copacabana and centro areas. With this, I wanted to visit a Favela. So we ask people in the area and everybody says not safe, don’t go. My fiancé started to be completely against it, esp hearing all these warnings from even Brazilians saying favelas are ugly, they are not safe, etc. so even though I had contacted Zezinho, I told him initially we won’t take the tour. He just wished us the best and this was end of conversation. Eventually towards the end of trip, I managed to finally convince my fiancé and we ended up setting the tour with Zezinho. He was so kind and so caring about his favela, Rocinha, that he even video called with us to give us assurance.
On the day of trip, we met him at the São Conrado subway station ( and by the way, Rio’s subway, contrary to many other places, feels very safe ). So here we are, with my fiancé who even had nightmares about safety in this tour and thought let’s end it soon and let’s get our alive.
Zezinho took us to the top of the favela using their own bus and as we walked down, he told us everything about it. How the power system works, how the water works, how addressing, mailing or owning houses differs. What we saw during this 3-4 hour walk was eye-opening. We realized that Favelas were not ugly, they were beautiful and unique and vibrant. You see life, lots of smiles and lots genuine faces. Everybody told us to feel at home here. As for safety, not only I felt safe in Rocinha all the time, but I felt much safer than I do in copacabana or centro. And I mean A LOT safer. Not just a bit. We went to busy street and to narrow and non crowded alleys. Never ever I felt the same worries I safety I had in copacabana. And you think Favelas are dirty, I challenge you to visit. I saw very dirty corners in centro, not in Rocinha. And I saw a lot of young people in places like copacabana that decide to beg for money. Again, not in Rocinha. Yes, people are poorer, but no, they have a lot of pride. Everybody works, everybody contributes to the community. I left with feeling a lot of love for the Favela, and wondering with myself, we care so much about bias in us, but here are these honest, hardworking, genuine people in favelas in Rio. Partly ignored by their own people in the city and marked as unsafe. If this is not bias, esp when I see how much safer it is than other places, what can I call it. I want to emphasize, as I think it matters. If you are concerned about safety, I am telling you, from my fiancé who had nightmares about Favela that after the visit, she called it THE SAFEST place in Brazil that we went to. We came back and kept talking about Rocinha. How beautiful it was. And boy, what an experience we had.
And few words about the tour guide, Zezinho. This guy lives here, while he could have lived in us ( he is an American citizen ) and he cares and really cares about this tour and educating you about the Favela. The last think he cares is your money. If you don’t believe it compare the prices of this tour with others and other experiences in Rio itself.
Did I have a regret doing this tour? Yes, I regretted that we did it on our last day and didn’t leave enough time to comeback to Rocinha.
If you are in Rio, take this tour. If you ask me between Christ the redeeemer, sugarloaf mountain, copacabana and ipanema beaches and all those other things you can do in Rio which one I miss more, I tell you it is the tour at Rocinha.
Thank you Zezinho, if your mission was to show us the truth of the Favelas you did it the best way possible. You showed us the most kindest, and most honest people in Brazil. They deserve much more and I wish the world sees these hardworking communities and I wish them and you the best.

We are looking for a tour that does not require walking uphill a lot but do not want to be in a car the whole time. Is there a tour that drives (or uses the cable car) to or near the top and walk down ?

I think you need to search for Favela Tours in Rio. There are many companies that serve different favelas. All I can say is do your research. Most are sitting in a bus or jeep, not as many walking tours. Find walking tours at your pace with a local guide and where part of the money benefits a social project in the favela.
