We did two tours with Eat Rio - their Food Tour and their Wine Tour. Both were excellent.
The food tour had us taste fruits that we hadn't even seen before. Everything we ate was best of the local food, in neighborhood cafes/restaurants/bars. If I passed by these places by myself, I would not even consider them. But what a surprise every time we stepped into the place.
The wine tour was a blast. It was supposed to be a 3-hour affair but it turned into a 6-7 hour outing. Need I say more?
Highly recommend both tours.

Our family of 4 did an evening bar food tour with Tom and Bindu. What an experience! We had a wonderful time visiting four different bars/restaurants and trying all kinds of traditional and exotic foods and drinks. Tom and Bindu were perfect hosts and we all enjoyed talking to them about lots of different topics. It was like having old friends showing you around their town. I highly recommend doing one of Tom's food tours in Rio!

This is a must do experience for anyone wanting to get a real taste of the local cuisine. Although it rained the day of our tour, it in no way dampened the mood (pardon the pun) and quite the contrary - it was the perfect way to spend a rainy day! Gabriel, our tour guide, was warm, friendly and knowledgeable and genuinely wanted to provide us with the best experience possible. We tried various fruits we had never even heard of, along with a variety of popular brazilian drinks and meals. We ate and drank until we could no more!

This was a fantastic food tour! We are avid travelers and go on a food tour during all of our trips. It was a six hour tour where we visited 3 different areas, a Farmers Market, the oldest restaurant in Rio and the night scene district. There was so much food, as soon as we thought we were finished we were off to another location. Our guide Maricela was amazing. Here energy, love of food and Rio made for a memorable day!

Brilliant tour, hosted by Gabriel who was an impassioned, warm and informative host. We had an internationally diverse and great fun group of about 5 guests (low season) comprising of sole travellers and one couple. The quality and quantity of the food and drinks was first class with a mix of interesting drinks (alcoholic and also non-alcoholic fresh juices). Variety of relaxed bar/restaurants and a formal sit down restaurant. Starts with very interesting sampling of fruits at fruit market ( although rather dashing and great fun USA young teacher enjoyed well received interest from more than just the fruit vendors at the market! ) Don’t want to say too much about the specifics of the tour, as the surprise factor of the well planned tour is a fundamental part of the enjoyable experience . Tom, the owner of the company is a brilliant pre and post tour communicator. This tour is a MUST do (preferably early on during any stay in Rio as it familiarises yourself with this marvellous city and the unique things it has to offer). I am so pleased that I took the tour.

So glad we booked this tour. Had all the ingredients for success with good company, great guide and interesting sights, sounds & tastes! The guide, Gabriel was informative without being over the top plus added special pieces of info when asked or needed. My notes say "Very, Very Good" and it was! We started off at the street markets for a sugar-cane juice, tapioca pancakes then a lesson in fruits & tastes of same. A quick cab ride and it was a local Brazilian restaurant, packed with locals, a couple of Colorado Indica beers and fish croquettes, roast lamb, vegetables plus a Portuguese custard tart to finish! We walked on to try a Caipirinhas, I went the traditional Lime. Next stop was a bar/cafe mix with eggplant & pickled red onions, followed by oxtail & potato croquette with sausage. In another cab and the last stop was an Acai bowl washed down by Cachaca de Jambu, a fiery spirit with mouth altering properties! A thoroughly enjoyable way to sample real Brazilian dishes while mixing with fellow travelers and interacting with the locals! Highly Recommended!

A rainy day in rio is not ideal but this tour was such a trip saver! Tom was so fast at responding to my tour request. We booked our tour and got Gabriel as the guide. He was so cute and absolutely fantastic. Perfect english and we ate and saw things we never would alone. Sooooo much food and drink. I am so glad we took this tour. Also I am vegetarian, it was definitely vegetarian friendly! And we got to see the famous art stairs! It was amazing!

I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Rio! I organised it with Tom, who responded so quickly to my enquiry and sorted us with a place on the tour even though I'd given very little notice! We were recommended this by other tourists we'd met whilst in Rio so we really wanted to try it! Gabriel took us around and he was brilliant, he was so friendly and really looked after us! He took us to lots of different places from markets to street food to restaurants! We tried foods I definitely wouldn't have gone for normally or found whilst in Rio so it was a fantastic experience! Great value for money, we tried lots more food and drink than I was expecting! Tom sent a follow up email detailing all the foods we had tried that day with recommendations of other places to eat in Rio which was a massive help, going above and beyond! So glad we did it!!

Actually I did this food tour in Jan 2018 and I still think about it. I remember Tom as our tour guide and I will never forget my experience. I do like to travel but very reluctant to try foods from other cultures. My best friend booked this tour and I only went along to please her. In the end, I was extremely surprised how much I enjoyed my experience and how the tour shaped my traveling experience. Fast forward to 2024 and I recommend this tour to anyone who says the word “Brazil” during a conversation. I was extremely pleased he sent a recap of all the places we visited in case you want to revisit.

From the time I booked this tour to its completion to the post-tour follow-up, everything was perfect! Tom, the owner, was very responsive, even answering my questions about current yellow fever cases in Rio (fortunately, none). Our tour guide was Gabriel. He was very knowledgeable and a lot of fun to boot! We explored markets; tried different, new things to us; had a caparinha (or two); and ate some really delicious food at a lovely, old restaurant. I can’t think of one thing that would have made the day and tour any better!

See Tom’s answer. I would add that Uber works really well in Rio. Cheaper than regular taxis.

From Copacabana it is a very easy journey - a quick taxi ride or you can even take the metro if you prefer.
