I’ve probably visited and stayed at 7 or 8 of these little top-of-the-hill Middle Ages towns during my last three+ weeks of traveling in Slovenia and Croatia and this was by far the least interesting. Too crowded, too touristic, not well laid out for parking and exploring. Not much to see or do, especially on a rainy day.
Typical Venetian square but nothing is open, and other than the courtyard of that square, not much to see. Despite all the pedestrians looking lost as they wander around, the place feels like a ghost town since so many venues are closed. Sure, some of the views of the valleys below are nice but there are such views just about everywhere around here. Sure, they claim the best of truffles but that alone isn’t sufficient to make this place special.
The covered entrance of town has some artifacts hanging on its walls with signs explaining what they are but the location makes it difficult to really see anything with all the comings and goings of people and local vehicles.
The longest Istrian stairway with 1,052 stairs leads to Motovun. Here you can shop for Istrian Brandy, olive oil, and truffles. There is a large mural of the giant Veli Jože of Motovun (from a 1908 book). He is a symbol of strength and power. You can find the childhood home of Mario Andretti (formula 1 driver). Anthony Bourdain ate at Konoba Mondo – I wished I had known that before eating at the hotel Kastel (not recommended). Konoba Mondo is just on the outskirts of town. Unless you are into cheap souvenir shops, there’s truly not much here, only commercial exploitation to the max.
If it’s on your way, just do a short detour to see this place, otherwise not worth going out of the way to see it. You can see the whole place in 1-2 hours.
Side note: You cannot drive your own car into town – so prepare for that. The first day I was there, the main bollard that prevents cars from entering (some type of large metal tube that goes down to let you in if you have the proper sensor on your car) wouldn’t go down so no vehicle (even the ones that had the proper rights to do so) couldn’t enter or leave. It was a complete mess, chaos to the max as deliveries couldn’t happen, vans couldn’t bring tourists up into town, etc. Made for a fun show though!

It’s sad to see that a town is adapted entirely to turists, anywhere you look you see only rooms for rent, the access to the inner walls with the view is only if you pay 💵💵💵 it is very sad that the film festival which was held there for 25 years will not be able to continue its path there because of how the town has become only focused on turism. 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑 sad beautiful town losing its soul

Glorious panoramic views of the valley below and the top oozes medieval charm. You can enjoy the scenery from any point along the walls, so I skipped the tower climb (view probably not much different). Some good restaurants there too.

Motovun is situated above the south bank, midstream of the Mirna River. It is located approximately 70 km from both Rijeka and Pula and is touted as being among the best preserved urban complexes from the Middle Ages in all of Croatia. Motovun is considered the centre of the northern part of Istria and is often referred to as the most famous and beautiful mediaeval town in Istria. Although we found it beautiful, I preferred Groznjan. The latter did not seem as touristy and seemed more “lived” in.
The town is dominated by Gothic and Romanesque architecture, which has remained preserved in its original form up to today. As the spirit of the Mediterranean is also present in this region of Istria, mild winters and warm summers are part of everyday life.
One of the most visited and popular of the fortified Istrian hilltop towns, this town and the surrounding area is famous for the black and white truffles one can find in the nearby forests. The largest truffle in the world was found in forests of Motovun Istria back in 1999. Giancarlo Zigante, still holds the world record in Guinness book of records for the largest white truffle ever found in the world.
There is a large parking lot at the base of the hill that heads up to Old Town, but if you park here, it is a long walk up to the main gate or you can take the shuttle for a fee, but it is still a steep climb from the shuttle stop to the first gate.
If you arrive early in the day or early in the season, trying driving up as far as you can go, and park along the side of the road as we did. We only had a short walk to the main entrance gate. This main drag, leading up into town was lined with wine and truffle shops, so stop often to catch your breath – the climb is steep and not advisable for those with mobility issues.
Before long, we reached the first of two defensive gateways. Take the time to view this inside passage way – we noticed various insignias from Motovun’s history as well as the Venetian lion. We continued on and were greeted by sweeping views of the valley on our right hand side. I believe this area is called Plaza de Josef Ressel. There were also several terrace areas with tables butting right up to the defensive walls. Restaurants and more shops lined the left hand side of the walkway.
After passing through the second defensive gate, we entered the upper square Plaza de Andrea Antico.
Located at the top of the hill, it is the oldest part of the city and it is surrounded and protected by the first set of walls, which are the best preserved to date. The fortification system dates back to the 13th century. The wall is 436 meters long and up to 15 meters high.
On arrival we visited the Parish Church of St. Stephen. Our visit continued as we walked around the walls and ramparts admiring the stunning views of the green countryside.
Of course, a glass of local wine and snacks at a small restaurant, on the edge of the abyss, with views overlooking the valley was a wonderful way to end our visit. As an aside, I read that race-car driver Mario Anndretti was born here. Seriously! In a traffic free, tranquil hamlet!

XV, liga a Cidade Baixa à Cidade Alta.

Motovun is one of the most popular tourist places after Rovinj. The place is nicely situated on a hill and very compact. Motovun, apart from the many stores, can be seen in less than an hour. For a short visit it is recommended, but the place is overrated. Those who know the Tuscan towns will be a little disappointed by Motovun in comparison.

We are visiting Istria in May - staying in Rovinj. We are planning a day travelling around hilltop towns and had decided on Motovun and Grozjan. Which order would you do them in and how long did you spend in each one. Are there others we should visit? Thank you in anticipation
