I'm a one-time PADI instructor who now just fundives for, well, fun. I keep coming back to Roatan because even if the reef is in better condition in other, more remote (and expensive) places, Roatan (and particularly West End) offers chill, relaxed diving you can't find anywhere else. The diving is also affordable, and you get nice, long dives for your money.
The reef is very close to shore in West End, so a real perk is that you don't ever have to travel very far to go diving (no long days on the boat). Getting to come back between dives is great--you can have a snack, chat with other divers, and relax. On the sister island of Utila, for example, you can't come back between dives, because the reef is further away from shore.
I went for 10 days, diving the two morning dives nearly every day. Each time, we dived for at least 60 minutes (I think my longest was 65, which was awesome--in most other places I've dived, the dive time is "capped" at 45 or 50 minutes). I've dived in a lot of places, and there's nothing I hate more than cash-grab dive shops that reduce dive times and rush the dives so they can cram more dives (and more customers) into a day. Most dives under 60 feet, unless we were visiting one of the two wrecks (The Odyssey & El Aguila, both sitting at about 100 feet). When less experienced divers ran low on air, they always had a DMT (divemaster in training) on hand to take them safely back up to the boat so the rest of the group could carry on diving.
There is rarely any significant current, surge, or waves. Visibility 80-100 feet. Water so warm you don't need a wetsuit (80 degrees in July/August). Basically, like diving in an aquarium. For the entire 10 days I was there, the weather was windy only once, and the shop did their best to take people to more sheltered parts of the island (I took the day off that day, lol).
It's true that the reef is suffering. Overfishing, warming sea temps, the works--it's happening all over the world, not just here. There is more algae and coral bleaching every year. Still, I saw fantastic marine life. There was a hammerhead shark, and plentiful tropical fish, eels, crab, lobster, and turtles. If you're just looking for amazing diving, I'm sure the Red Sea or Tahiti or Fiji are way better. But West End is special--it's low-key, a place dominated by divers, divers in training, and dive instructors. There isn't much else to do there beyond diving (or having a sunset drink at Sundowners bar), and that suits us fine.
One of the things I particularly like about West End Divers is that there is a female manager who also gives work to female divemasters. Diving can be a boy's club. Another thing I liked was that there were quite a few experienced solo divers at the shop. Although I was traveling with my dad, he only dives occasionally. I had (good) dive buddies, and people to chat with on the boat/between dives. The divemasters are all competent and efficient, good at making sure everyone is safe and having a good time. Without my having to ask, Courtney (the dive shop manager) made sure I was diving with the people I liked and the DMs I had good rapport with. She knew I didn't want to be paired with dive courses/inexperienced divers--whenever possible, she made sure I was going on the more advanced dives (I've had to tag along with Open Water courses in the past, because some shops don't have enough staff to separate courses from fundivers--oof).
If I had any constructive criticism for the shop, it was only that some of the rental gear was showing signs of wear and tear. I have my own equipment, but I noticed several people have to swap out equipment because of leaks (one with a cracked second stage hose), and one of the tanks I was using had to be swapped out as well (a leak at the valve). The way they throw the equipment into wheelbarrows to carry it out to the boat is hard on gear, in my opinion. But this kind of thing happens at every dive shop on the island, and whenever there was an issue, it was discovered before diving and quickly resolved.
To conclude this long ass post, I'll just say thanks to West End Divers--can't wait to come visit again in the future!

West End Divers does a terrible job of blackwater diving. They tether divers to the boat like a dog leash which is totally wrong as any experienced blackwater diver would attest. Because you aren't drifting with the current along with the critters, you only have a moment to see then as they whiz by instead of drifting with them and the current. Another serious issue is the charge $150 for one single dive. Crazy

We had a great experience diving with West End Divers. Courtney was very knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly. We had some travel trouble, and they rescheduled our dives with no issues. We had a refresher course for some of our family and a member was also doing their discovering scuba course. Alex and Caleb were our instructors and they both had very calm personalities which helped alleviate any anxiety we were having. We especially liked diving with Caleb who was training to be a dive master. He was very personable and attentive. The diving was amazing! The water was unbelievably clear the first day and the coral was just simply breathtaking. We saw turtles, sting rays and the most beautiful colorful fish. I wish we could have experienced their night dive which sounds incredible. Courtney also helped organize an excursion for some family members who did not want to dive the second day and they went to see Sloths. Alex recommended where we could buy fresh caught fish off the peer in the West End, and we were able to have a fresh seafood dinner at home. Caleb had great recommendations for restaurants and bars (Sundowners). We hope to be back to Roatan and dive again with West End Divers!

West End Divers is fully 5 stars. Full stop. They are professional, knowledgeable, and friendly team lead by the very organized and super smart Courtney. Peep her scheduling board, but don't touch it! My husband fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming scuba certified and while I didn't scuba, there was this immediate sense of friendliness and community. Not enough words to convey the sense of safety, value and network they bring. Thank you to everyone at West End Divers!

I was on the Royal Caribbean ship Wonder and wanted a two tank dive on Roatan. I was picked up by a local cab driver, Miguel, outside the port entrance and arrived 15 or so minutes at the dive shop which was located in a cool part of the island. The shop had plenty of room, a clean bathroom, a changing room and individual lockers. I just had Achilles surgery three months earlier so they placed me on a low boat with only an instructor, Tracy, and the captain. After about a 5 minute ride we arrived at the dive site. I lowered myself into the water and Nelson, the captain, helped me put on my bcd and tank. I had never done that before and it was great. The dive was a drift dive and was easy going. The visibility was outstanding and we viewed many forms of sea life including turtles, rays, and barracuda. The first dive lasted 61 minutes with regular air at around 60 feet.
We returned to the dive shop for our interval where we ate watermelon. We did pick up a couple from Colorado for the second dive and the events mirrored the first dive.
The same taxi returned me to the port in plenty of time for the ships departure.
The staff at the shop was excellent, very helpful and accommodating. Courtney was good at responding to emails and helping me with my injury.
I used the shop’s BCD and regulator and they worked well and were in good condition.
If I were to return to Roatan I would definitely use this shop again.

HORRIBLE experience. Have used dozens of dive shops all over the place and this one is uniquely bad. Dangerous conditions, faulty or missing equipment and rude staff leading the dives. Spend several days with them and it never changed. Later, in speaking with locals they always stated "I would never recommend them" - we should have asked around first.

Hey 964mas,
I'm sorry you had regrets and a horrible experience. Can you tell me when you visited us so I can investigate what happened during your trip? The examples you mentioned in your review is not feedback we typically hear. I want to make sure I follow up on anything that needs attention. Feel free to email me directly at courtney@westenddivers.com

The overall atmosphere and personal experience is great. The dive masters, instructors, and the other people. We want to thank Alex, Courtney, and John. John helped us out, because we had a flooded computer and he helped us find a way to fix it in no time. Courtney did a great job during the dives, and was also very kind towards us during so. Alex, the diving master was also great and king in every way and they both were great during the dive, before the dive, and after the dive. Thank you.

Professional, safe, and knowledgeable. Courtney is a wizard at accommodating multiple requests. We had a ‘wish list’ of sites and were able to dive almost all of them. I hadn’t been diving in about 2 years and so chartered a private boat for my daughter and I … so worth the extra money and Joseph was an excellent guide. My daughter did 12+ dives and enjoyed them all! Thank you for a fantastic experience!!!

Another terrible operator on the island took our money and left us high and dry. We were there for one day off a cruise ship. This was to be my highlight excursion from the cruise. We walked in and West End was all booked up for the day. After hearing our plight, Courtney, the wonderful booking lady asked us to hold on for a few minutes as one of their boats was returning. She spoke to a few people and said we were all set to go. We were so happy and figured we would be joining one of the other dives. Turns out she got us our own boat and private dive master! Cost was the same as a group dive. The dives were both fantastic and Sara took us through some wonderful features. So so much cool marine life including a seahorse which apparently is pretty infrequent. Would go with these folks again in an instant and HIGHLY recommend them!

The 3 dives I did with West End Divers were some of my most unpleasant dive experiences I’ve ever had in my 25 years of diving (~300 dives). The dive operator BARELY leaves the habor to take you on a ‘boat dive.’ Luckily, the coral looked fantastic but there was no fish life. The dive master went nuts underwater over spotting a small eel— cause that’s the level of fauna you should aspire to see when you barely clear the harbor.
The divemasters/instructors will also bully you into carrying next to no weight underwater. Apparently, if you request weight, you were taught “incorrectly” and “your instructors should have their credentials revoked.” Last I checked, most of us dive recreationally and we do so with weight to enjoy the entire dive, including the last half of the dive when our tanks get lighter. Bullying customers into not using weight is not only poor form, it’s unsafe.
The dive masters/instructors need remedial training on how to give feedback and how to provide instruction. I dont recommend taking any classes/dives with these amateurs.

We are a group of 8 traveling from a cruise ship, some of us are a little nervous snorkeling in open water. Can we book threw you and opt to stay on beach if we want?
撰写日期:2020年1月11日
West End Diving shop is primarily a dive shop. However, w/ a group of 8 you might get them to take you snorkeling. Best if you get out over the coral to see sea life w/ a boat.

Greetings! I'm making my first trip to Roatan in April, on a cruise ship. A diver friend recommended your shop to me for snorkeling, but after looking at your website it looks like all diving tours. I'm trying to decide if I should just book a tour with the cruise, or can we find good snorkeling and beach without?

Hi brasmuss, We can certainly take you snorkeling while your cruise ship is here! Please contact us via email through our web site and I will send you all the relevant information

ARK

You need to be certified to dive with West End Divers or any other dive shop in Roatan! All of the dive shops take this very seriously and they will lose their our certification if they don't follow the strict Padi rules. They do have a discover scuba diving course that allows you to try diving off the dock but I don't know if they take you out to the reef at all.
