I was born around partition time - 1947 the year in which two cultures divided; families were torn apart; Hindu Muslim riots left over a million dead; women in thousands jumped into wells to die, rather than fall into hands of rioters; trains left Lahore to reach Amritsar or Attari border with no one alive but full of corpses oozing blood! It was a time of millions trudging from Pakistan to India and vice versa, often encountering violence on the way. It was a massive Railway and bus transport migration. Families lost their loved ones, homes, jewellery, children & became refugees. Migration stories are full of soul wrenching images and memories and few still alive, remember that era with sadness at losing friends in all communities, now separated by hatred and religious intolerance. The Musuem is well laid out, with small ticket - ₹ 250/- $3 per foreign tourist. It’s worth to know this history of two nations that emerged raw from colonial rule and British raj in 1947 August 14-15th. Situated in middle of bazaars and restaurants it’s a good experience and deserves a coffee in Starbucks right next door!

A Profound Journey through History
Visiting The Partition Museum in Amritsar was an incredibly moving and thought-provoking experience. The museum's exhibits vividly capture the pain, struggles, and resilience of those who lived through the Partition of India in 1947. The attention to detail in preserving artifacts, personal stories, and photographs is commendable, and it helps visitors connect deeply with the past.
Walking through the different sections, I found myself immersed in the stories of families torn apart by the partition, and the displays left a lasting impact on my understanding of this historical event. The museum's layout is well-designed, guiding visitors through a chronological journey that helps grasp the complex historical context.
The staff were knowledgeable and approachable, providing insights that enhanced my visit. The audio guides were informative and added depth to the experience. The peaceful ambiance of the museum allowed for introspection and contemplation, which is essential when confronting such a poignant chapter in history.
The Partition Museum serves as an essential reminder of the horrors of division and the importance of unity. It is not just a collection of artifacts; it's a place that fosters empathy and encourages reflection on the consequences of political decisions. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious about India's past, this museum is a must-visit.
I left The Partition Museum with a profound sense of respect for the survivors and a better understanding of the struggles they endured. This museum is a testament to the power of preserving memory and learning from the mistakes of the past.

This museum should not be missed. We only had an hour here but could have done with much longer. The displays are well set out and show the events leading up to the partition of India and Pakistan, the partition itself and the heart-rending stories which followed. I learnt so much. Photography is not allowed inside the museum.

It’s the Yad vashem of Bharat.. the unscrupulous Brits left without accountability to satisfy their insatiable hunger for power.
The place is very well stocked of video, audio and documentary evidence of the pain of partition. It has a bare minimum charge of Rs 10 per person.
Walking distance from the golden temple, the Jallianwala bagh memorial and Partition museum are must visit for young kids and youth who haven’t had this brush of history in much sugarcoated descriptions of British and Congress.
Clean toilets, audio guide and cold water available for visitors. Cheers to a good visit of 2 hours.

I visited the Partition Museum in Amritsar, Punjab on 20 April 2024 and was charged Rs250 admission fee as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holder, same fee as Foreigners. Fees for Indian citizens are only Rs10.
I refused to pay the foreigner fee and was denied entry into the museum. Why is the Partition Museum go against the guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs with regards to benefits accorded to OCIs?
I have written to the Partition Museum of Amritsar twice and they have not replied. The museum must stop the practice of charging OCIs the same fees as other foreigners because the Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines (FOREIGNERS DIVISION F. No. - 26011/Misc./47/2019 - OCI) date of publication 22.07.2021 clearly states that all OCI holders have parity with Indian nationals with regards to paying fees at who visit national parks, national monuments, historical sites, museums or wildlife sanctuaries in India. Partition Museum, Amritsar, please explain why your establishment is shortchanging OCI holders. Thank you.

An excellent museum that covers all aspects of the partition of India in 1947. The museum is split into small sections with each section covering a specific topic of the partition.
The entrance fee of 500 INR for two non nationals is more than reasonable for the content inside.
The museum is very close to the Golden Temple and should take about 1-2 hours to fully appreciate its information.
