Please be aware this is not a free opportunity, it costs a 1000 rupees per person plus donations and gift shop expectations. Even with this in mind it was well worth the visit, the information and photo history is a must to experience on your trip to this area. We just were not prepared financially for any costs and felt very embarrassed we could not donate.

A must visit local museum when visiting Hikkaduwa. While an unsurprisingly emotional visit, the in-house guide was incredibly articulate and imparted facts and her own personal experience with passion and extreme generosity of spirit. We had already fallen in love with the Sri Lankan people and to understand the suffering and turmoil their country has endured over so many years was a privilege. Don’t shy away from seeing and hearing about their trauma - it is a small price to pay for experiencing this beautiful country.

We went out there today, but had a really bad experience. The lady who had to tell us about the tsunami and its photos did not have time to follow us around as we had paid for because new groups came to be. We had to hurry through everything and were shown out the door and over to the train after 10 minutes. We had to pay 2000 LKR for our visit.. it was really a clean money machine.
I would not recommend this place to anyone.
On the contrary, 5 meters further down the road lies an entered museum, where they take the time to tell about the episode. They themselves survived the terrible incident. If you want, you can donate money that goes to the children who became orphans.

Visited as a family of 5. We paid 1000 rupees each to get in. Our guide was great and had lived experience of the tsunami. Unfortunately due to some other rude visitors who were talking, it was sometimea difficult to hear him. It was also incredibly hot in some of the rooms. Very interesting and sobering visit and would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

Impressive story in this museum. The tsunami has been a while, but is still present here and has caused a lot of trauma. The man and woman who run the museum tell the sad story of that day of the tsunami.

The place is rich with pictures from the crises of tsunami wave and it gives visitors information about what happened. The staff himself Rosa is one of the tsunami survivers. Thank to the riscue team formed to give early warning before such event happen God forbid.

This is a very important memorial site for Sri Lankans after the 26th December 2004 tsunami. It is also a reminder to all of us how quickly life can change and what little control we have. The museum is a powerful and respectful reflection on the lives lost and the ongoing impact on subsequent generations. It also offers hope that with the development of warning systems, evacuation protocols and information systems such an event will not have the long-lasting impact of the 2004 tsunami.
The museum has a variety of exhibits that detail the history of tsunamis in the region, the science behind tsunamis, and the stories of survival. Many of the staff are survivors themselves and their personal stories and memories help us to understand the impact of that shocking and unexpected natural event.
It is a ‘must see’ museum.

A very personal in depth account of the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, and its devastating effects on the community by those who experienced it and survived. Very very emotional and had my husband and I in tears. However, it is not only a story of devastation but one of determination and resilience and of hope shown by the wonderful Sri Lankan people. The museum staff work with the community, providing education and tsunami drills, support and counselling to the victims and their families. A privilege to have witnessed their excellent work.

A must if you are in Sri Lanka and Hikkaduwa.
Entry is free and a nice lady explains everything about tsunamis and especially the 2004 tsunami. It is super informative and at the same time frightening to see the many photos of that event.
For 50 rupees you can see part of the train that crashed in the building next door.
We can highly recommend a visit and please leave a donation!! :)

We relied on our driver so I don’t know but assume 7 days a week at this popular time of year. Maybe , ask your tour operator or driver.

Vh Ina

Hi, I went to a museum in 2013, which was very moving, they were building a proper building, as it was then housed in a shack. Has the new memorial been finished yet?
撰写日期:2015年11月19日
Hi. It is still located in a shack which is part of the original structure reconstructed. No. The new memorial is not built yet. However there is another hut located in the same compound with more photographs of the disaster.
