First trip to India and it didn't disappoint. This is a busy tour with lots of travel but such an amazing country with so much colour and sites to see - difficult to rate the top tips - Ganges trip - amazing - Taj Mahal - fantastic - Shimla - beautiful - Golden Temple Amritsar - mind blowing. Jaipur - noisy fun and brilliant! We went with Mercury Travel and our guide was just fantastic.

Grand Tour of North India – Oct 2023
The following blog covers all the experiences of our travels on the Grand Tour of North India excursion.
Indian Visa and Passports etc.
To go to India from the UK, one needs a VISA. This is easy to obtain. Just go to the web link: India e-Visa for British Citizens | eVisa Eligibility from United Kingdom (india-visa-online.org). From there just select the tourist visa application and its all very easy and online. Pay one’s monies, and then usually within 3 days one will receive the visa confirmation. This is automatically associated to one’s passport. I would still however print off a copy of the email confirmation and have it with you when one travels. I would also recommend that a copy is also saved on one’s phone. We used the phone copy with no issues and is just easier than have loads of paper to hand.
Other useful tips
Carry a travel basin plug as not all the hotels have an actual basin plug.
Be flexible and go with the flow.
Only use plastic in the hotel or named shops. Not shops say in a market area.
Drinks etc within the hotels are basically European priced. So, a 300ml coke in the hotel is 150IR to 300IR Vs 40 from a shop on the street. A 500ml kingfisher is around 350IR to 550IR Vs 100IR.
The coach helpers and car drivers provide bottled water during the day as part of the base package. Which was great. In addition, when going around Delhi they also had beer and coke etc at street prices which was great as well.
Always keep one’s passport close to hand. Every hotel requires to see this. The tour guide manager looked after this for our group, so all was easy.
Hints on Monies for Tips whilst on the tours.
In the supplied documentation, Mercury provides an indication with respect to tipping whilst on holiday in India. The suggested amount was £3.00 per person per day per tour excursion. However, it then goes on to state that the handing of coins is not recommended or even suggested. As we in the UK do not actually have any paper one-pound notes therefore the minimum note we have is £5. Thus, for a couple, the suggested tip per day per say tour would account for £6, so a 5-pound note is enough for a tip per tour per day per couple. (Based upon the suggested schedule of tours etc, this amounts to around 14 £5 notes).
In addition to the Tip money, I would recommend that one has at least £300 in UK money. One can only change this when in India, and all the hotels provide exchange facilities. The exchange rates are not that bad, and at least one can exchange without hassle when one is at the hotel. My suggestion would say only exchange around £50 and see how this goes as one cannot take Indian money out. And cash is only needed for those small items like snacks etc from a stall whilst on an outing. All large shops take credit cards, and I would recommend using these as the exchange rate is always then based upon the current days rate, which is the bank rate NOT the Tourist rate, so a better exchange. And it’s safer. Use one’s actual credit card, and not NFC. Just my view.
Overall, the information provided within the supplied documentation is extremely beneficial and informative.
In the end we exchanged through the tour manager who gave the best rate and was easy.
Also, re Tips, the tour guide manager, suggested that we should give him £20pp for the whole tour for tips to cover porters etc, excluding any tips etc for himself, for the actual day tour guides, the respective bus drivers and then also the bus helper. The group agreed. This we paid in £’s.
Then through the trip, where say local tips were expected, he provided those tips etc to the locals. Things like tut tut rides to get from coach drop off to actual visit stop.
Hence what some of this £20pp is for.
The other is for all the porters etc.
Then in addition to what is listed on the brochure there were a few optional extra tours. These are paid in £ and over our trip, there were 6 extra options. He suggested a cost of £100 per couple (£50pp), which is very good for extra tour options during the whole trip.
For details of what these were see the daily blog notes below.
Banknotes in India are currently being issued in the denomination of ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100 ₹200, ₹500. (UK Exchange rate is around 100INR to £1.)
Tour Reps etc and tips paid. (For future traveller reference).
Tour manager – Amit. Just great and made things all flow. On hand currency exchange. Addressing any issues, sorting out all those little yet important things that just made the holiday what it was. Great job with a great sense of humour.
Tip for Amit was based upon the number of days for the main tour duration. 15 days at £3pppd. Thus £90 for a couple. (So either one has this in UK £’s or based upon £1 is 100IR hence 9,000 IR).

Actual holiday
Departure from the UK
Starting with the departure from the United Kingdom. Departure from the United Kingdom was on the Virgin Atlantic departing Heathrow in the evening with a nine-hour overnight flight arriving in Delhi the following morning.
On the information provided, it was indicated that upon arrival at Heathrow, one goes to the check in, hands over one’s passport and the respective boarding card would be provided and is correct. However, should the traveller not have checked bags or just wants to check in online, there is no reason whatsoever to have checked in via the Virgin Atlantic online website. This will then provide one with the electronic boarding card and therefore being able to walk straight through the security clearance and just wait for the departure of the flight. I would however still recommend a print version of ones boarding card, just for back up issues. (Like one’s phone goes dead). Also prior to the flight I would recommend that one gets the Virgin Atlantic App and loads the respective flight. One can then also preselect one’s seats before actual check-in. Also, one is then able to use the app to show ones boarding pass and hence check in etc without paper documents.
The flight was on-time. Meals looked ok. However, we did not have them mainly due to the flight time.
Day 2 – Arrival in Delhi
Arrived on time. Indian customers control very smooth and no issues with clearing. Just make sure one has either a paper copy or a copy on one’s phone of one’s India evisa approval. They check this upon arrival. Also, on the landing card. Just enter the hotel name of one’s first night and one’s own mobile number.
Mercury rep who was also the tour manager was waiting at arrivals and again all very smooth.
On the bus to the hotel. He ran through the initial schedule and just made things easy.
First hotel the Metropolitan spa in Delhi is good. Rooms clean. Spacious, and a good selection of food at lunch dinner and breakfast etc. Drinks at European prices.
That evening had a surprise tour as was not in the brochure to see the India Gate all lit up. Lovely.
Day 3 – Day tour around Delhi.
To day after a relaxing evening and a good night’s sleep, catching up on the time lag, and a good breakfast we set off for the tour around Delhi. First stop was the Red Fort and market area. The visit around the marketplace was via a rickshaw, which was very enjoyable and a great experience. After this we headed to the Gandhi Museum, again a real great place to visit for history and culture. After this stop, it was off for lunch at a very good restaurant where we had a set menu, which was good. After this we visited a few more lovely sites. The day tour guide whom we called Moon, was just brilliant. History, culture Jokes just the right level of information, so a great day and very enjoyable.
We were back at the hotel just after 18.00, having a very enjoyable and interesting day.
Tomorrow it’s an early start to get the train to Varanasi.
Day 4 – Travel to Varanasi and evening tour.
Varanasi daily tour guide as Rudi. Again, very informative, funny and helped explain the history of the Ganges.
An early start to the day with a wake-up call at 04.30 for departure at 05.00 to catch the 06.00 train from Delhi to Varanasi.
Seat allocation was provided prior to us on the way to the station. The whole group were in the same coach.
Breakfast was provided by the hotel as a breakfast box which was very good. Though the train does provide a breakfast, it is not western, so the hotel breakfast box was very welcome. Lunch was also provided by the train, and this is a true Indian based curry. The train does provide 1, 750ml water bottle.
A slight change to the published Mercury brochure in that after our Varanasi trip we are flying back to Delhi, where we are then getting a coach to drive across to Jaipur. And as such, our trip to Varanasi we just took a night bag and our cases remained in Delhi where we will reconnect with them when we go back with the flight and get the coach etc.
Overall, the Train trip is comfortable and a good way to see the local countryside as we travelled from Delhi to Varanasi.
The hotel in Varanasi, the OM Villas is good. Lodge based rooms set out around a set of gardens. All very comfortable. Good food in the restaurant. Also, a good outside warm pool.
The first evening we headed off to the Ganges for a boat tour to see the Chats and surrounds. We also managed to have a stop at one of the main daily Riverside festival events, which was a real eye opener and very interesting. This was one of the extra tour options.
Day 5 – Varanasi local day tours
Today a rest in and leaving the hotel around 09.30 to visit the Sarnath temple ruins and museum. A great intro by Rudi, the day tour guide on what the place is. The birthplace of the Buddha religion.
Then it was back to the hotel for lunch and a restful afternoon at the OM Villa hotel and pool.
At 15.00 we then went off to have a look at a local looming mill, followed by a show where they performed a very old local area dance. This was tour extra options 2 and 3. Good. Then back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 6 – Varanasi to Jaipur
An early rise 04.30 to leave the hotel to get to the Ganges for the early morning sunrise tour. Just breath-taking. Then back to the hotel around 08.30 for breakfast. Then departed the hotel around 10.30 to the airport to get the flight back to Delhi.
Arrived Delhi, where the coach was waiting with all our cases that we had left behind. Also, a pack lunch was provided. Then we drove down to Jaipur arriving around 20.00.
All in all, a good day, visits history and rest.
The hotel in Jaipur was the Radisson which again was clean and spacious. Really no time is spent in the hotel as one is out all day till early evening on the tours, so facilities just not used. Food was all good with plenty of selections.
Day 7 – Jaipur day tours.
Today we started around 08.15, heading by coach to the base of the Amber Fort. From there we had a jeep ride through the narrow roads up to the fort gate. The tour guide ‘Moon’ did a short information talk, then giving around 20mins to walk around. Then up to the second level, same format, and finally the top level. In all extremely great place to visit.
We then headed of to a textile carpet where we saw how real Persian carpets are made.
Then off to lunch. Usual good quality restaurant with this time a buffet style selection.
After lunch just had a short stop at a jeweller where we saw how stones were cut and placed. Remember Jaipur is world famous for jewellery.
Then we headed to the famous bazaar market. Had plenty of time to walk around, see the side shops, get hassled as expected by the various shop staff, however a good experience.
And then we went on tour extra option num 4, and the night jeep Safari. Let’s just say, brilliant. Great stops. Great views. Loads of quality photo stops, and worth everything of an optional tour.
Then back at the hotel by 20.15 for dinner and rest.
Day 8 – Jaipur to Agra
Started the day with a good breakfast, to depart around 08.30.
1st stop was at the Janta Mantra which was very interesting. A good explanation by ‘Moon’ our day guide that just helps in one’s appreciation of this place.
Our next stop was not listed however was really interesting. It was what they called the Steps Well. Really an eye opener and very interesting.
Then a short drive to lunch and the usual buffet, again a good selection.
Then it was off to Agar and the next exciting stops on our tour.
Our hotel in Agra was the Ramada. Again, good clean spacious hotel. Great pool and poolside bar.
Day 9 - Agra day tour
Started the day with an early 05.00 wake up, and a departure at 05.30. Where we then went to the Taj Mahal to see the sunrise over this world iconic building.
Then back to the hotel for breakfast and the rest of the morning free. So hit the hotel pool and used the time to have a rest.
After lunch at the hotel, we headed off to see the Agra Fort, and then back to see the sunset and a different view across the Taj Mahal. The fort again is just breath taking, with loads of history and great views. Added to this was Moons exceptional updates as we walk around this large place.
Then we drove to see the sunset over the famous Taj Mahal.
Back for dinner by 19.00 and rest.
Day 10 – Agra to Delhi
Today we left Agra after breakfast and headed back to Delhi. It’s a 4 and a bit hours coach ride, so we had a comfort break along the way.
Upon getting back into Delhi, we had lunch.
After lunch we then and had a stop at the UNESCO recognised Humanyun's Tomb, a captivating mausoleum that seemingly floats above landscaped gardens. A real lovely place to walk around and take in the splendour of the whole area.
We also had a few other photo stops to arrive back at the Metropolitan hotel just around 17.00.
We all said our good buys to Moon along with the coach driver and coach helper.
Day 11 – Delhi to Shimla via Chandigarh
Early morning wakeup call at 05.45 for a base breakfast in the hotel before departing at 06.30 to the station to get the 7.40 train to Chandigarh. Upon arrival transferred to a set of cars that take up to 5 people, for the very scenic drive up the mountain to reach Shimla, and the hotel. (Radisson Jass).
On the way up through the mountains one could see the terrible land slides as quite a lot of the road was only half available.
Had a lunch stop after an hour from departing Chandigarh train station in a semi western restaurant. So, we had chips and curry dips to start with, then a buffet curry selection and followed by good old ice cream. Very tasty.
Finally arrived at the Radisson Jess in Shimla just before 17.00. Rooms all ready, bags all delivered, and the hotel is very grand. Hit the room had a cuppa and then dinner was from 19.30.
Day 12 – Shimla day area tours
Breakfast from 07.00. Met in the entrance lobby to start our days tour activities.
We initially drove further up the mountain road to a beautiful viewing point. Upon arriving the whole place was shrouded in clouds so 0 view. So, our guide got some coffee etc and still ran through the history of Shimla.
And then almost instantaneously the mist lifted to reveal some of the most stunning view across to the Himalayas.
We then drove down to visit the Viceroys lodge and gardens with a short internal tour.
Back to the hotel for lunch and enjoy the views from there.
After lunch, it was off for a walk up to the main town street and Market areas. Then free time for the rest of the afternoon and makings one’s own way back to the hotel. Had a ride on the cable car or ropeway as they called it, to the top of the mountain.
At the top is a small temple and a very large statue of Lord Humayan. There were loads of Monkeys walking and running around and pinching any person that was wearing glasses. The monkeys had just pinched somebody else’s glasses hence I had put mine in my pocket.
It was a short walk back through the market to the hotel.
Day 13 – Shimla to Chandigarh via the toy train.
Today we left Shimla on the toy train but only for hours ride mainly as the bottom part of the line is still not safe.
We woke up to pouring rain lightning and thunder. Undeterred we headed off to the Shimla station to catch the toy train. By the time the train departed the mist and rain was clearing, and so we had a clear view as we headed on back towards Chandigarh. The views were excellent and yet again one of the tours top activities.
We were met after being on the train for just over an hour, where we climbed back into the respective cars with our luggage and headed on down the road for lunch.
After lunch it was only a short drive to the 1-night stay at the Holiday Inn just outside Chandigarh.
The hotel itself is very spacious with large comfortable rooms. Buffet style dinner with a good selection.
An early night as up very early tomorrow to get the train up to Amritsar.
Day 14 – Chandigarh to Amritsar.
An early start with a wakeup calls at 05.00. Met in the lobby by 05.30 and then off to Chandigarh station for the 06.35 train to Amritsar. Breakfast was provided by a breakfast lunch box. The breakfast box was good with a set of sandwiches, a mixed fruit drink, 2 cakes and fruit.
The train ride was 5 hours, covering some scenic areas. There are or were several vendors coming up and down the train with tea and crisps etc. In the last part of the journey, a local Sikh group joined the train and were offering a local snack.
Arrived by lunch, and arrived at the hotel where are cases were already there. Good hotel and good quality of areas.
After lunch was free time, so headed off into the centre by tuktuk. A good experience. Back for dinner. After dinner back into the centre to see the lights etc. Quite an experience.
Day 15 – Amritsar day activities.
Today’s activities were split for the tour in the morning around the golden temple and in the afternoon a tour to the border show.
Our daily tour guide was Singh, and yet again a great guide. Warm and friendly. Before entering the temple, we had a visit to the hidden gardens where there was in short, a mass murder by the British in 1919. This was all at the leading up to the independence in 1947.
The tour around the Golden Temple was just breath taking. Not only did we see the fantastic golden temple in the middle of the water lake area, we also had a grand tour all around the eating and food preparation areas. Just a real eye opener. We then had a little spare time to workaround the local shops etc, before heading back to the hotel for lunch.
A short rest and then off around 15.30 to go and see the boarder show between India and Pakistan. What a show. Entertaining. Load and just an experience to see. Just being there far out ways any utube clips.
Day 16 – Amritsar to New Delhi
Today is our flight back to New Delhi to finish off the main part of the tour. The flight back was at 12.40 so a departure from the hotel at 10.15 to the airport.
A few little panic issues on the way to the airport as the bus engine decided to go onto slow movement. So, we crawled into the airport at a walking pace but got there. Check in etc, straight forward and a good flight back to Delhi.
Arrived and the bus was waiting for us to take us to the Metropolitan hotel. Late lunch again awaiting at the hotel.
Just used the rest of the time of free time, sorting out cases etc, and getting ready for the last part of our India trip to the tiger reserve and safari.
In summary. A great north India tour. Just so much to see and take in and covering loads of miles. All in all, early morning wake ups etc. Highly appreciated the tour and also the group of fellow travellers which just made this trip what is was.
The following blog covers all the experiences of our travels on the Grand Tour of North India excursion.

My wife and I have just returned from an amazing cultural and wildlife experience on the Mercury Holidays Grand tour of North India.
India is a country of huge size and cultural diversity ranging from the extreme wealth and opulence of the Taj Mahal at Agra and Golden Temple of Amritsar to the abject poverty of people sleeping on the pavements, railway platforms and slum in the major cities.
It is not for the faint hearted, however. It is an eight thousand km, 18 hrs journey, to get to the capital Delhi via Dubai. We also travelled over 4,000 kms within India between the different cities we visited and walked around 120 kms on foot.
The tour had seven flights, including getting there and back, six train journeys, including the famous ‘Toy Train’ down from Shimla, two by coach, two in a fleet of nine cars up to and partly down from Shimla and a boat trip at night on the Ganges in Varanasi. Most of these except the latter being 6 to 8 hours long
We were extremely fortunate however to have our guide Amit Sharma, who was absolutely amazing and managed to keep us all safe throughout the whole 17 days of the main tour. The group consisted of 36 of us, mostly in or past our sixties, including eight singles. His knowledge of the country and its history was truly encyclopaedic.
In addition to the main journeys around the country mentioned above, he somehow managed to get us through the organised chaos which is India. This included 18 rickshaws on day one around Delhi, two rides on 9 tuc tucs, including one to the Golden Temple, a nine-car convoy up to Shimla and a jeep ride to the Red Fort. Almost every form of transport in India except the myriad of motorcycles in the main towns and the Delhi Metro. This also included coach trips every day to and from the main sights and porters wherever necessary to get our luggage on and off the trains and coaches. He really was remarkable.
The sights themselves are fabulous, from the iconic Taj Mahal and Golden Temple to the Red Fort in Delhi, the burning funeral pyres in Varanasi, the Pink City of Jaipur with its incredible Jantar Mantar an ancient but still functional astronomical observatory.
Shimla in the foothills of the Himalayas has the old residence of the Viceroy, where in the 1800’s a third of the world population at the time was governed from.
In Amritsar the Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikh religion, is spectacular at night in the midst of its pool and by day and night provides over 200,00 people daily with free food irrespective of their colour, creed or gender.
Also, all the hotels were four- or five-star full board and the whole holiday seemed to be extraordinarily good value for money at about £2,600 each, including all of the above, with only another £700 between us spent on trips, shopping and tips.
The food was excellent, although mainly vegetable and spicy and we were provided with packed lunches every time we had an early start.
Our only criticism of the accommodation was that the Park Hotel in Delhi, where we stayed four times, often seemed to have other functions on (weddings and parties), which effected our ability to use the full facilities, like the pool.
Although this was not a specific wildlife tour, as keen naturalists we did manage to record 72 species of birds, one reptile (crocodile) and 11 mammals including seeing a tiger and sloth bear on the extension tour to the Ranthambore National Park. Despite being delighted to see these it’s a long way to go, (5hrs by train each way) for one day (two safaris) into the park. In fact, we were very lucky to see both the tiger and the bear as there is only about a 20% chance of doing so.
As a hopefully constructive comment, it would have been better to spend an additional day in Ranthambore rather than a day at rest in Delhi, where we had already been three times before. Giving a better chance of seeing the wildlife and making the journey there and back less of a rush.
Overall it was a fantastic experience to witness how such a huge country with nearly one billion people still manage to operate in a state of organised chaos.
Understanding all the different religions and history was fascinating and made it something we will not forget or be able to digest for a long time.

I'm doing the grand tour of north India with Mercury Holidays in October. Asking anyone who's been on this trip, what's the best type of luggage to take as the trip involves train journeys and internal flights? Thanks.

We're going next week and we're just taking normal suitcases. It sounds like there's porters everywhere we go. I'm a little concerned ad my travel agent has just informed us that we've only got 15 kgs for the internal flights so might have to pack very lightly
