At the end of Chandni Chowk, forming one end of the long road which stretches from the Red Fort, stands a large 17th century mosque, one of the main mosques of the city as it was originally built. While Shahjahan had commissioned the design and building of the Red Fort and the Jama Masjid, his wives and daughters added other buildings and gardens to the new city; of the mosques, this one was built by Shahjahan’s wife Fatehpuri Begum.

The mosque is not only still in use as a house of prayer, it is also functional in other ways. The cloister-like rows of cells that surround the central courtyard are used as a madarsa, and you can often see boys and young men here going about their studies. The main prayer hall of the mosque is a restrained, beautifully symmetrical building, and the gates—the main one, leading out into Chandni Chowk, as well as two side gates on the northern and southern sides of the complex—have some attractive plaster decorations, though the modern paintwork done on them is a little tacky.

No entry fee is charged, but please remember to take off your shoes at the gate. Shorts and similar inadequate clothing need to be covered up; if you don’t have anything you can use, the gatekeeper will provide you with a sarong that you can wrap about.

An oasis of calm and worth a stop if you are visiting Chandni Chowk. Shoes must be removed. Felt like stepping back in time. Beautiful courtyard.

An authentic, under-visited mosque if you want a slice of life look into the prayings of Muslim in Delhi. Architecture is low-key interesting and definitely worth a look if you are already around the area.

This is the worst place I have ever seen in this world . Kindly do not visit . Guide Will tell you to visit mosque and the way is via brokers … telling you to pay for certain things and also if you’ll give 1 you will get 100 and they will ask for thousands which is useless . Kindly don’t fall into their practices . Even if you don’t visit this place trust me you’re not missing anything . It’s dirty as a land and thinking hat people have . I will not recommend anybody to visit this place .

The monument is beautiful, however the experience inside with the beggars and hawkers is a turn off. Moresoever, caution to everyone buying the chaddar and thread for the Tomb of Salim Chisti, they are sold at a rate of ₹3100 upwards. The guides will push you to buy and will not inform you the rates in advance. Please excuse and visit the Tomb by yourself.

Its an eye opener for us when we wanted to pray at the mosque as part of our itinerary. We looked for the women's side of the mosque and was told that they didnt have that. After praying at one side of the mosque, we looked for the 'door' to go inside the mosque and was surprised to know that we were already at the front of the saf! The tarmac after the first few safs was actually where the rest of the congregation would pray. Having travelled to many parts of the world and prayed at many mosques, this is a first for us!
We enjoyed ourselves just sitting and watching the goings on around the mosque. It is a picturesque place and the cool breeze of the sunny winter day make you want to just sit and relax.
For the ladies who want to pray there, make sure you do your wuduk first as the wuduk taps are in an open area. An alternative is to eat at one of the restaurants nearby and go to the washrooms there and make your wuduk.
By the way, go to the rooftop restaurant of one of the hotels beside the mosque. It gives a different view of the mosque thats breathtakingly beautiful.
