If you visit Shimla clearly you ought to take in the Viceregal Lodge. Just be aware that only 3 rooms are available to the public. The rooms that are available are unfurnished and the walls are full of old photos almost entirely absent any British people. You get no sense of the life of the house and the ‘guided’ tour is almost content free. If you would like a sense of Indian national insecurity around the British Raj then by all means pay the entrance fee. Otherwise I would just stroll around the grounds and take in the spectacular view for free.

What an astounding piece of modern historical architecture! It is amazing to think how was it conceptualised and constructed way back in 1880s!
The outside facade may bear a standard fort or a palace look, but what lies within is simply marvellous. The teak panelled walls, the imposing ceiling, the chandeliers - everything is just awe inspiring. The history associated with it, is fascinating, too. And they let us see only 5% of the total building - just three rooms - it is a shame and reflects poorly on our lack of knowledge and appreciation of history. It is a callous attitude to simply shut down 95% part of the building since you cannot maintain it! What the so-called guide (?) tells you in a rote and mechanical, rehearsed manner is insipid and uninspiring. When I pressed him for more history and background of the building, he simply ignored and walked away.
I truly hope this place sees better days in future.

This place has such a rich history unfortunately this does not come across on the very limited tour that we had. We were shown into only three rooms most of which contained photographs from the time of the British Raj.
The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and there is strictly no photography inside the house. The rest of the house is out of bounds and is used for educational purposes.
The grounds are well kept and afford great views of the surrounding area, there is a cafe and a small gift shop.

Previously Presidential Summer home, now converted to IIAS where scholars come and research on Social science and other subjects.
They offer a private tour of 60 ppl batch that covers 3 restricted areas and tell the history of the place. Good place if you are fond of history.
We were excited to come here but its over rated.

Sitting on top of Observatory Hill, the Viceregal Lodge (now known as Rashtrapi Niwas, the 'President's Residency) was built during the late 1880s for the use of the Viceroy of India and, I suppose, that is why it looks, in part, a bit like a Scottish castle. It was in this building that, in 1945, a conference was held with the leaders of the Indian political parties to agree the future of India after the British had left. If you go on one of the set tours of the building (which is now used by the Indian Institute of Advanced Study) you will see some of the photographs (which are some of the extensive collection held in the building) taken at that conference. The tour, conducted by a knowledgeable volunteer, is well worth taking.

This historic site that is now an advanced learning institute was where Indian partition was discussed. The building itself is designed in the Scottish style and is impressive inside and out. The grounds make you feel as though you are in an English country garden. The tour itself is okay but nothing special.

Yes it is open on Sundays, the same hours (9am - 5pm) but it is closed on Mondays.

yes pls take a local cab,the bus isnt that regular and it is amidst cool tropical mountain jungle.

Hello,
I visited Shimla on a managed tour, so can't be specific about taxi fares. However, taxi drivers are pretty busy and appear fair and honest. Shimla itself straddles a mountain ridge, and you may find your hotel is on the opposit side of the hill from the Viceregal Lodge. The Lodge is worth a visit, so take the trip and enjoy the architecture, the gardens, the views, and the attendant history which resulted in the gigantic changes to the political boudaries of the sub-continent. Also visit Scandal Point, The Ridge, and if there is a performance at the historic theatre, take tickets for it. Shimla is very special....enjoy.
Taxis will take you to any hotel, and due to the hilly nature of the town, they may be the best option. The Oberoi Cecil is and incredibly beautiful hotel, but there are many others available. The station is pretty central, but Shimla is has grown to be a lot bigger since the days of Victoria's reign! Book a hotel within walking distance of The Ridge, since you'll walk around there and The Mall regularly.

This is not a place to stay or lodge or hotel. It's old name was viceregal lodge when it was Shimla was the summer capital of British raj. In those days this place was head of the state house.
