The building that houses the institute was originally built as a home for Lord Dufferin, viceroy of India from 1884 to 1888, and was called the Viceregal Lodge. the building had electricity back then in 1888 generated by a steam generator from London. There in in 1912 a hydro project was constructed to provide electricity near tatta pani. this place houses beautiful architecture dating back from 1884 like apricot wood ceiling, Burmese teak work construction and wax-based fire fighting systems. Now this place is known as IIAS a research center of humanities and sociology. The place is a must-visit one when one comes to Shimla to get an insight into the history of the partition of India and how the ruling was done by the British back in slavery days.

Historic Building made in Pre-British era not only building only but the location and the built of Location is an excellent must visit place.
It should be a must in your bucket list whenever you are visiting Shimla .

No Doubt Indian Institute of advance study is one of the best place in shimla. I always feel very nice to take round in IIAS. It's very educational to your children. Ek Number 👌

The view, the feel and the vibe is truly one of a kind. The tickets are of two kinds:
1. Outside in the lawn
2. Guided tour (40 mins)
As we had limited time we could not do a guided tour and were travelling out in the lawn, and its beautiful. Its hard not to fall in love with the place. The view is just what you need on a morning.

Was worth visiting. Took a nice walk in the gardens while we were waiting for our guided tour. The place is very well maintained. It was amazing to be inside this heritage building. This was the first building to have electrical engineering and fire emergency systems. Amazing woodwork and architecture. The guide was well informed and kids really enjoyed. Would highly recommend to visit when in Shimla

Let's forget about everything else, the architechture, the beautiful campus, the fact that you don't have access beyond a few rooms. I think one should definitely visit the Viceregal lodge for a number of reasons.
The first is that this is the closest you'll ever get to see grand buildings of India like the Rashtrapati bhavan from inside. The fact that big decisions around our independence were taken in this building makes it even more of a spectacle in my opinion. Secondly, the history of Shimla portrayed in this building will help you get a perspective on the evolution of Shimla as a city.
Disappointments: The ticket price seemed a bit overpriced (more so when the guides tell you that the materials used in the construction were of such great quality that they don't have to maintain/polish it ever). Well if the money isn't going in the maintanence of the building, may be the gardens around it would be a marvel! The answer is NO! The gardens around the building could've have been better maintained. Yes there are many flowering plants here and there but it is just not match up with the beauty of the structure it surrounds.

You travel long distance to be told you can only see 2 rooms after paying 200 Rs per person. and rest of area is cordened off.

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla is a must-visit for history and architecture lovers. The Victorian-style building is a former Viceregal Lodge & houses a research center & library. It offers stunning views of the city & surrounding hills.

I would prefer to go here without a guide. The one who was there didn't add much that the photographs didn't already provide.
A great place to explore Indian academia and Scottish architecture.
There are plenty of great spots to take photos of and the structure itself is the main attraction.
Once inside, you'll not be allowed to take any photographs, so that's a bummer. It's an average experience, but if you have some time to spend - I recommend strolling in the garden and browsing through some of the books.

The grounds here are well maintained and great location for photos. The historic building has many unusual features and an impressive garden and views. No entrance into the building as it is an educational institution. Worth a visit.

Shimla was the summer capital of India during the British rule and this building was the residence of the Viceroy. This is the building where the discussions related to Independence and partition of India were finalized. Post independence, it became the summer residence of the President of India and during S. Radhakrishnan's time, it was converted into an institute of advanced study. Built in 19th century, this beautiful and majestic building had all the technology and facilities well ahead of its times like electricity. Immaculately preserved, this heritage building is a must see in Shimla

How the road conditions towards this Institute, if we are driving by car as roads are normally slope upwards in Hills? Will it be safe to drive? And how will be weather these days? Will it be sweaty trip?

The road particularly towards this institute is nice to drive. slope road upward but not at all risky. You can easily go by Car there. The weather currently in shimla is cloudy. You will enjoy there. But prefer to hire taxi and you just enjoy.

Sir, Please don't mind. This is not a hotel. This is an academic Institute for post graduate Fellowships for scholars and also a famous tourist attraction in Shimla. And there is no facility to stay here as it is not a hotel.....

Yes, the visiting time starts from 11 AM and closes by 2 PM as they have research scholars working there too. The guided tour is very informative from the Govt. of tourism where the guide explains everything in English and Hindi. But the tour is only with batches of 20-30 persons, so you need to take the entry ticket and wait for your turn to go inside the historical palace. Only the ground floor is open for tourists and photography is not allowed inside. The tour inside should be over by 45 minutes, one can enjoy the campus outside and take snaps and visit the souvenir shop.
