This has special memories for ex residents, perhaps too crowded for tourists. It used to have everything and was extremely affordable. Food, cakes, coffee shops, an ice cream parlour, clothes, shoes, flowers, even fresh meat.
It’s a shadow of its previous life and much more crowded.

Lots of market stalls to see, although most seem to have the same stuff. Not much variety!
You do get harassed if you are a western tourist to visit certain stalls etc but you just have to go with it.
Something good to do at nighttime.

Horrible experience. The sellers harass you, follow you, even if you explain that you are not interested. The advertised prices are completely mind-blowing and prohibitive. We didn’t stay so much it was unbearable.

NOT for the faint of heart. I first visited when I did a solo guide tour and it was much easier being with a Kolkata native. I was not approached or bothered in any way. When I returned a few days later with my brother, we were constantly trying to avoid people approaching and following us. We get that it's part of the culture, but it was way to excessive and frustrating to really enjoy the market the way I got to the first time. I did buy all my gifts there with the prices so low and bargaining making them even lower. My three stars are an average of attending with a local and attending without.

Old covered market, with many exhibitors outside...the only problem that made us leave very quickly...a tout follows you constantly, even if dozens of times you explain to him that no thank you, that you are leaving on the opposite side or go into an outside store... always there!!

150 years old market in Kolkata
Worth to visit due to its historical value
Decent place for shopping. But you have to burgain a lots. They ask triple amount from the foreigners. Overall experience is good. Most of the people are well behaved.

An old and must visit place if you are exploring kolkata. Its near Charangi, esplanade adjacent to Hotel Oberoy. Market is flea or bargain market like Sarojini Nagar of Delhi. Do Bargain, You,ll get good stuff.

A legendary market,more than century old but don’t know why it’s called New Market.
The Hogg market is the original market built by britisher but now New Market consists of many other markets and street vendors in the surrounding.
Best place for bargain shopping in Kolkata,also have many good place to eat,when in Kolkata this place can’t be missed but keep in mind that this place can be over crowded and chaotic specially during evening.

Yes the Oberoi Grand but the price varies. Kindly call their reservations or check the website. They have a large pool and are bang opposite new market.

1. You can consult Dr. Karmabir Chakravarty ( For appointmentTel : +913324656055 ). Very good Gastro.
Malls are open on Poila Boisakh. Hospitals are open but restricted availability of Doctors in OPD.
