We had a wonderful time during our visit to The Kitchen At under the guidance of Chef Tom and Sous Chef Constance. Tom guided us in the preparation of Kung Pao Chicken, Baby Bok Choy with Mushrooms and Spicy Seasoned Green Beans. We really had to do all the scary chopping and oil-sizzling ourselves which was exciting and rewarding. Constance was so sweet and we really enjoyed talking to her about the cooking school and Shanghai in general, which deepened the cultural experience of creating the meal.

There were six people in our group, including two 12-year-old girls, both of whom said the cooking lesson and location topped their list of experiences in seven cities. Kudos to China Highlights, who include The Kitchen At in their Cultural Experiences of Shanghai tour.

The place is really nice and is set up to look like a studio on a HGTV cooking show. The ingredients and tools seemed to be high quality. I was a little skeptical about handing giant cleavers to novices, but hey, it was an adventure! :)

It was very satisfying to sit down afterwards and feast on the fruits (and vegetables) of our labor. This is a can't-miss activity in Shanghai for all you travelers who love to cook!

The chef and translator were excellent. He demonstrated each step and then watched you perform each task. The recipes were easy to follow, the results delicious and will be simple to do at home. I would recommend this class.

My husband and I tried the chinese style cooking class there once and we made a delicious crab casserole and a fried rice dish. We felt very good afterwards and shared the meal with a few other students in the class. The chef was very good and nice and the facility was spacious. We are thinking of going back again soon!

Went to Kitchen at for corporate event, people were split into groups and each group was responsible for making one dish only. There were lion head meatballs, deep fried spring rolls, dumplings with meat and pumpkin. There was not much teaching involved, more of barking orders by grumpy chefs to a group of people who split tasks. I did take a few good pictures out of it and learn just how much grease, soy sauce and sugar goes into everything. The food was eaten afterwards for dinner and overall it was fun.

We booked in to do a dumpling class and ended up cooking something that really wasn't a dumpling. The menu was a pork and turnip cake and a taro roll.

The pork cake was actually a huge piece of steamed dough that we couldn't eat there and then and had to be brought back home and fried. This would not be convenient if you were a tourist and had no kitchen.

The taro roll was a taro paste wrapped in bread, then fried. It was OK, but not that special and pretty greasy. The bread fell apart and it seemed as if they had not made it there before.

Basically - no dumplings. The chef seemed fine and the translator was lovely and had very good English, but she should have been briefed by the chef beforehand, so as to give more immediate on the spot instruction.

For the price, we were pretty disappointed with what we got. 380 RMB per person and we walked out with two tubs of dough and few pieces of fried bread.

Very enjoyable, well organized, very clean premises, all together a fun experience. Wish we had had more time to eat what we cooked but that was our problem, not the "Kitchen's". Only one suggestion, do not include ingredients that cannot be found in the country your customers come from! Highly recommended!

My friend and I reserved two different classes at The Kitchen At - one a wok class with two dishes and one a dumpling class. The two dishes in the wok class. battered crab and pork liver, were taught by the "chef" - owner. He did not seem to want to be there. He ruined the battered crab dish with a "sauce" that was more like southern biscuit gravy, thickened with too much flour. We couldn't eat it. The pork liver dish was good. The dumpling class was a little better. Except, that "chef" didn't seem to want to be there either and left as quickly as possible after teaching us two sweet dumplings. It was supposed to be at least one savory dumpling, but they changed the menu without telling us. There are much better cooking classes in Shanghai.

I and my friends have been attending classes at "the Kitchen at" for 3 years now and from day one have had only wonderful, memorable experiences. We send friends and relatives whenever they visit as it is such a pleasant and unique experience. We've learned to cook everything from Hong Shou Rou (a Shanghainese braised pork dish) to Ossobuco, to dumplings and have never been disappointed by the quality, expertise, or friendly service.

We operate 6 days a week from Tuesday to Sunday and the office is closed on Sunday and Monday. If one calls on Monday, there is no office staff available for inquiry. Our office hours are posted on our website and all printed programs. All instructors teaching in our studio are professional chief cooks from 5-star hotels or high-end restaurants. They share techniques and knowledges in the class, with printed recipes provided for taking home as reference.
