Few new things in terms of gadgets, Shanghai is not the city for that, unfortunately.
These businesses all have very little equipment.

I didn't plan on going here but a friend needed a computer part and took me along. It's a building full of shops, a couple of which sell computers the rest like a maze of small shops selling second hand or pirated, copied computer parts. It was like entering a scrap yard. Wasted trip.

Avoid this place unless you want to get ripped off. This is a fire trap waiting for something bad to happen. If you need electronics go anyplace but here. Most items are defective and overpriced.

I had a feeling that the need to call a cluster of electrical / electronic shops 'Modern' in Shanghai would be part of its character and I was not disappointed as this is definitely 80's - 90's feeling and stock of goods.
It takes about 20-30 minutes to browse through each roof and don't bother if you are actually looking for real modern electronics like laptops, phones, media players, etc. If this is your target close to Dashijie metro station (大世界站) there are two properly modern multi-storey places to get anything you want, better prices at Cybermart (see my other reviews).
The place is practically at the corner of XiangYangNan Lu and FuXingZhong Lu and FuXing is well known to taxi drivers. It's also not more than 10 mins south of ShaanxiNan Lu metro station.
To the point now:
Amongst the stalls with modern and very tacky new fascias and covers for the latest smartphones there are still dozens of stalls seemingly catering to people who still repair vinyl decks, transistor radios, 80's alarm clocks and at times even fully antique items.
There is something there for aficionados of photography (not you instagr.amers and Ixus generation), old radio tuners, tape players, vinyl decks, amps of all types and mixers of various sizes all mercifully belonging in a bygone era.
If your thing is finding oddities every now and then, souvenir shops and repairers are dotted between the electronic stalls.
However, it is rather unlikely you will be tempted (and probably you should not) by anything that belongs in the cutting edge of technology.
Steer clear of some of the very obvious fakes especially if it involves media storage and connections (adaptors, chargers, etc) as you maybe jeopardising for the sake of a few dollars your memories of this trip or even the health of your laptop or phone.
