Lovely and Enjoyable

We enjoyed our visit to the gardens and the mansion tour. We visited in March, so the gardens weren't in full bloom, but for northerners, seeing some green and walking outside is a real treat in March. I'd love to see it in bloom. The mansion is lovely and worth seeing. The drive from Gulf Shores (under 2 hours) was not a problem.

Very Disappointing Garden

The gardens are very unkept. The fountains are either filthy or not running. Very few plants have names or are identified in anyway. So sad. Most gardens in the US identify plants.
So disappointing for such a large well known garden. The rose garden ,even though not in full bloom, was lovely. Quite a few paths were blocked off. Most of of the Asian Garden was blocked off.

The dining room is beyond awful. We ordered a salad, more than 1/2 of available ingredients
needed restocking. Requested that be done. 30 minutes later not done. We were told we could return to take a few missing items. Items still not replenished. Hot food looked very dry and unappetizing. See pictures posted with this review showing salad bar and hot food.
Dining room was clean and well maintained. The porcelain exhibit is very nice to view with the exception of several filthy display cases.

The gift shop was lovely. Do not waste your time and money to visit this garden. There are too many lovely gardens and places to visit. Map of the property we were given was a black and white blurry photocopy. The porcelain exhibit includes a very well done and informative historical video. Having driven over 1,000 miles to visit this garden, all I can say is - beyond a tremendous disappointment.

Needs update on website to share when flowers are in bloom. Kennel needs renovation.

We visited March 9, 2023 and the azaleas had all gone by, and nothing else was in bloom. None of the plants are identified with labels as they are at other gardens I have visited. They do not allow dogs on the property, but advertise there is a “dog motel”. I have a 9 pound dachshund, but I would not leave him in the pen they provided. It had rained earlier, and the roof leaked. It was a wet cement floor pen with a chain link fence under a corrugated plastic roof. The temperatures were still cool enough for me to leave the dog crated in my car, so I am glad I had that option. (The dog would have barked if abandoned in that pen by himself with no one around to keep an eye on him.). The admission did not include the house. That was extra. About a third of the paths were blocked off — half of the Asian garden and also a boardwalk near the river. It was disappointing that they didn’t make up for the restricted access by offering a discount. I really felt that given the limited floral displays, the house should be included in the overall price. There weren’t any other plants in bloom after the azaleas were past. They should add the Encore Azaleas in between the traditional plants so the gardens will at least have something in bloom. Daffodils and tulips had also gone by. No pansies or annuals to make up for the lack of color. Apparently it is better known for their holiday lights. The best part of the visit was the porcelain exhibit in a building near the house. We might have missed it as no one at the front desk mentioned it when we bought our tickets. The exhibit included an informational video about the history of the porcelain exhibit. I think they should offer an introductory historical video at the entrance. As a footnote, there is a nice gift shop with locally sourced costume jewelry and garden related merchandise. We didn’t want to eat at the buffet (kind of like Morrison’s). The Gardens are out of the way on the west side of the Mobile Bay, and there is really nothing else to see nearby. We took the ferry over to Dauphin Island and saw Ft Gaines before we drove up to the gardens. It basically takes the better part of your day to visit, even though we didn’t stay in the gardens much over an hour. I think they should post an updated calendar on their website sharing when the azaleas are blooming. We drove down from Atlanta and our azaleas are more than a month behind Mobile. Ours are currently at their peak (March 17), so I was surprised to find we had missed the season. Overall it was a big disappointment.

Average, at best

I missed the azaleas, which is no one’s fault, but other than a few areas of run of the mill tulips, it was just “ok”. I got great enjoyment out of the hot house, but that’s about it. Course, it didn’t help when the admissions clerk acted like I was interrupting her work by walking in and wanting to buy a ticket. No greeting. No smile. She did say thank you. The groundskeepers were all friendly. 3/10/23

Superb gardens and home

Beautiful gardens and memorable home! I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the huge grounds. House tour guide was good, sharing history of the special couple that made their money from an early Coca Cola bottling and distribution investment. Home has large porcelain collection, antique furniture, silver and china. Amazing azaleas and a few camellia were still in bloom.

Loved the story, the home, the gardens!

After attending a lecture on Bellingrath at Gulf State Park in February, I was intrigued and wanted to see it. We drove over the next day. Even in late winter azaleas were blooming and so were camellias. We enjoyed walking through the gardens and the house. Lots of interesting history and beautiful things from my grandparent's time. It was neat to hear that several of the people that work there even today were connected to the family! I need to come back again in the summer to see the roses or in the fall to see the hanging mums!

This "did not" disapoint!

Another place that this didn't disappoint. A huge estate with beautiful landscape from flowers, trees to water fountains and buildings. We went on the last day of the Magic of Christmas. I would have loved to visit this during the late Spring and Summer months. I am sure it would be more spectacular. If you love the outdoors. This is a must and also make sure your camera is ready to take beautiful pictures of you or your family. Senior pictures especially or romantic walk or engagement place.

would love to come here again sometime

so much better than I thought it would be. my husband loved it so much, he wanted to walk through the magic of christmas twice. we met a couple where the husband said he wouldn't miss it and they come every year. be sure to come several hours before the magic of christmas so that you won't be backed up for miles in traffic and waiting in long lines for tickets. that's what we did and we explored the paths and boardwalks that are closed after the magic of christmas begins. there are plenty of benches and swings to sit on and relax along the entire path. the gardens have wagons to pull the children on along the path. they also have frequent booths to buy hot chocolate, popcorn, and a special place to make smores with chairs to sit around the different fire pits. there are different themes along the path with under the sea, asian, candy land, Mardi Gras, polar bear coke, etc. and music to match. we also did the house tour in the early afternoon. the guide was excellent and the house is beautiful.

Big but lacking

There are many beautiful gardens to visit in the US and abroad, but this one is average at best. The size is impressive so you'll get a nice walk in. But the property is lacking in overall interest. If you are in the area, this is a pleasant stop.. otherwise, maybe not so.

Well worth it

Only did the gardens as we did not have time to tour the home. Spacious gardens were lovely. Fun walk over the spacious are. Saw fish leaping from the water; think they were Silver Carp.
