We love visiting animal rescue centers and supporting their mission of rehabilitating wild animals. This one is huge with tons of different animals and birds! Very well organized with a route that takes you through all of the areas and informative signs. We spent about 2 hours exploring and really enjoyed it. We saw tons of birds, wild cats, tapir, sloths, iguanas, tortoises, marmosets, coyotes, turtles, crocodiles, and many many others.

This place is amazing from the start. As soon as you go inside you feel like you are in the forest. We booked a guided tour with Amy, who did a perfect job. We had so many questions and she explained everything really well and was super passionate about the animals! We never felt she was rushing us out, rather the opposite, we lingered quite a while. It was my daughter’s 17th birthday and this was her favorite activity so far in Costa Rica. Note that this is not a zoo where animals are exploited, rather the staff do their utmost to rescue wounded or captured animals and release them into the wild when it is feasible. You will see a lot of native fauna (and flora, the grounds are beautiful) in large enclosures, duly identified, but don’t expect photo ops holding live sloths. No animal exploitation here, they really care for the welfare of the animals they keep!!! Really inspiring. Also, there are many animals living here of their own free will, just coming and going (squirrels, doves, hummingbirds, motmots, butterflies, bats, ants, to mention a few we saw)
Practical things: it’s really close to San Jose (about a half hour drive in good traffic conditions) and on a Sunday morning it wasn’t super busy so you could get your tickets on site.

Our trip exceeded our expectations. It is a well-planned facility that allowed us to see a variety of animals quickly while we walked around.

This was an amazingly wonderful Wildlife Centre to visit! With the mission statement to "rescue - rehabilitate - release" how could you go wrong supporting these Animal Angels of Costa Rica's wildlife? My daughter and I are animal activists and were thrilled with our 5 hour experience visiting the beautiful animals at Rescate Centre. We managed to find all the cats (the Ocelot was very animated & fun), spotted one sleepy sloth and of course enjoyed so many more! Our only disappointment was that no tours were available during our Sunday visit (the only day we could go!) so basically it was self-guided with no staff or volunteers around to ask questions. We know there are so many individual stories to share about each of their long-term animal residents and I know we would have delighted in hearing them all! (I believe that Saturdays also do not have tours, worth checking this out in advance of booking.) My congratulations to all the organizers and volunteers for the wonderful work you are doing on behalf of Mother Nature's precious wildlife.

Too expensive for tourists. It was not worth to go there and spent almost 30 Dollars. I did not see many animals. Costa Ricans pay half the price which I would say is more appropriate than 30 Dollars.

Thank you for your suggestion. The animals do have large enclosures full of foliage, since we want to make it the most natural space possible for them. This can make it harder to see them on occasion. We do have different prices for Nationals and tourists, the same and most attractions and national parks. Keep in mind all of the proceeds go right back to our conservation efforts, and we really appreciate your contribution!

We had a very interesting tour with a wonderful guide leading us through the whole center, giving us a lot of information about the animals. We saw a lot of animals like birds, an ozelot, sloths, pecaris and monkeys. A tour here is an excellent possibility to see these animals very close, learn about them and support this very important project. Thanks for the great work!

I did not see any sloths, but I did get to walk among Peacocks, Iguanas, Curassows and other free-roaming animals on the walkways!

Our favorite San Jose activity. What a great organization. Very ethical practices, I'm so glad we went even though it was a bit far from downtown San Jose. Don't miss it!

I have a ton of respect for the work this organization is doing! And I’m so grateful that the money spent on entry and in the restaurant goes towards helping these animals! Rescate is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. It’s not busy at all (at least on the day we were there) and I definitely prefer supporting an organization like this, over a zoo. The staff is excellent and I really recommend this experience to others!

There are informative signs at each enclosure, and large spaces for most of the animals. There are a ton of birds (and I loved all the macaws, who were likely ex-pets and will now spend the rest of their years living in a beautiful, open space together). Be aware that there are huge, wild iguanas all over the property, but they are not aggressive. Still, it definitely scared me to see so many and not understand if they were out of their cages or if they had just moved into the park (Apparently, the latter. And they clearly really enjoy their home in the park. Ugly animals, but they really do leave you alone.)

We did see a teenage sloth crawling all over the trees and ropes provided in her enclosure. So fun to watch! She wasn’t really in an enclosure - she had the ability to leave if she wanted, and a random employee told us that she’s very adventurous and this is all part of getting her ready to leave the park permanently.

The restaurant has good food and is well priced. We spent 4 hours total in the park, so I was grateful that there was a spot to take a break for lunch.

The exhibit on how the park rehabilitates animals for release into the wild is really interesting. As visitors, we’re only allowed to see the animals who aren’t able to be released, due to mental or physical issues. I’d recommend finding out in advance if you can hire a guide for your experience in the park. I would have loved to learn more about each individual animal’s history and situation (why they can’t be released), but each enclosure only had info about the species, nothing specific to that particular animal. Even more signs about why each type of animal might end up in a facility like this, unable to return to the wild, would be interesting. After we arrived, we asked about a guide, and were told it had to be booked in advance for $5 per person (I think), but we hadn’t seen that option when booking on the website. Having a personal guide to give us background information would have been amazing. As it was, we had to ask random employees who were feeding animals or watering the landscaping. They were all very nice and helpful, but I highly recommend a tour guide if you have the option!

Thank you for your visit and suggestions! We are always working to improve our signage and tour availability. The tour really does give you a great chance to learn about the different animals, and is available on our website for your next visit!
