Our guide Christopher was knowledgeable, but not interested in sharing his knowledge. You had to ask specific questions, and even then the answers were minimal. We didn't see a lot, which I understand happens, but he was not capable of keeping up a running description of the plants and animals at the Reserve. Even if he had just talked about bananas plants and the national bird, it would have improved the walk. He didn't seem to understand that people are actually anxious to learn on a guided tour.

Our guide was Alex and he was terrific! He led us on a beautiful walk through the Reserve, and pointed out many different plants and trees and told us about their history. The hike up was a bit strenuous, but we got to sit and rest at the top. The view up there was spectacular! We could see Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo. We didn't see many birds or animals during the hike, but as were taking pictures, a male Howler monkey came through the trees about 20 feet from our heads!
As we loaded into our transport to head back to Samara, the skies opened up and it rained quite hard. That is very atypical for dry season, but we did get a bit wet. It was a warm tropical rain, so we didn't mind.

Our guide was Mirjana, who was an excellent guide and highly knowledgeable about the biodiversity in this area. We loved this nature hike and enjoyed seeing the wildlife, which consisted of birds, a tarantula, bats, and the amazing flora indigenous to Costa Rica. This hike was much different from the nature preserve we took in the rain forest where we saw sloths and monkeys, so, for us, we were grateful to go on this hike and experience the rich diversity of Costa Rica. It is a tranquil experience, not an adrenaline rush, and was a good speed for our group ranging from 30 to 65 years-old. We took the morning hike, as we thought it might be too hot in the afternoon. At the end of our hike we enjoyed freshly cut pineapple. So happy we did this tour!

The site is very close to Samara and has a beautiful jungle walk. Before the walk, our guide gave very good explanations on how settlers used to live, the main trees and how the jungle provided food and medicine. The walk, however, was very slow. Although we appreciated our guide's efforts to find exotic birds, we spent a lot of time just standing on the trail; at times it was a bit uncomfortable and boring. We did, however, see some very beautiful birds and a glancing glimpse of Coatimundi. The trail is moderate in difficulty so if you have difficulties walking up and down slopes, this trip is not for you. Overall, we found this excursion okay but not "oh wow."

Very interesting nature tour. We booked through the Werner Sauter website and hotel pick up was included. Luis was a great guide. So knowledgeable about the area, the history, the flora and fauna and animals. The hike was a little challenging up to the lookout but manageable and a great view of Sámara from up top. Would recommend for those interested in the many, many plants that grow in Costa Rica.

A friend and I did this tour with Mirjana from Samara Adventure company, who was excellent. She was very, very knowledgeable and gave just the right amount of detail about each insect, tree, and animal. She spotted lots of animals and told us about the evolutionary adaptations of various trees and their history and uses by humans. We got pretty decent photographs of birds and bats with the telescope.
The trail itself is pretty even and easy until the hike up the hill at the end, which I wouldn't recommend for anyone very out of shape or with joint or back pain. Wear bug spray and bring plenty of water. Closed shoes are a necessity.

Wide trails with trees, flowers and plants marked with signs. Hike to the scenic overlook can be strenuous. WEAR CLOSED TOED SHOES! No flip flops! Trail can get muddy and slippery when wet.

We did the guided hike here using Samara Adventure Company. We would totally recommend them. We had Bernie as our guide and he was excellent as the took us on the long hike up to the top of the reserve and back down.
The hike takes about 2-3 hours and is worth it. We recommend hiking shoes or runners at least but be aware that it can get muddy and wet in some areas of the trails.
The scenery is unreal. We saw two troops of Howler monkeys and many kinds of birds. Bernie was great at pointing things out and we really enjoyed the reserve.

Is the only way to visit this area through a guided tour? Is it possible to visit at any other time?

I agree with the previous respondent. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and a lot would be missed without his guidance and knowledge. The pace is slow enough to catch your breath and get good photos. You wouldn't want it it faster or slower or without the guide. Cheers
