At street level, this museum is called Museos Banco Central de Costa Rica. It is advised as the host of a large collection of indigenous gold art. The entrance fee of the museum if 8400 colons per foreign adult, which we felt is a rip off considering the quality and quantity of the collection. You were asked to store the bags (free of charge) in a locker room near the entrance.
We find that the collection of the museum is very limited (two floors, not much exhibit) and poorly organized, and with very limited in-depth discussion of the history, whether related to the indigenous life or money or gold. Unless you have both time and money to kill, it may be wise to skip this museum.
The museum should have a coin exhibit. But during our visit (Oct. 2024), the exhibit was closed. If the value of the museum is in the coin exhibit, the museum should adjust the entrance fee accordingly to reflect the quality of the exhibit.

This museum is a must see not only to learn history of Costa Rica, but appreciate the art and skill of indigenous people. Museum itself is an architectural wonder placed under ground. Lots of activities for kids. Thank you for creating such a great place to learn and enjoy!

Didn't expect very much from this museum but had time to kill in San Jose. Turns out this is a fantastic museum! Very happy I went. Very interesting, excellent English translations, history not just of gold but Costa Rica/Central America in general. Architecture of building is very interesting too. 4 stars because the CR Bank part of the museum is currently closed.

Very nice, spacious and didactic museum . One learns a lot on gold, art and social values in precolombian time. Like all museums in San José, it is not cheap (16US$). It is nevertheless highly recommended

Very interesting history of metal work in Costa Rica! Appreciated the collection. There are 3 levels to the museum. At first we had trouble navigating…it’s all underground! The temporary exhibit by artist Faba was terrific too.

There are some pretty amusing artifacts on display, various artwork, and sculptures that I found fascinating. If you're one who is intrigued by the history of any place you're in and how things came to be, this will give you a bit of insight. Enjoyable experience IMO.

This is a nice little Museum below the National Theatre. They have a very nice collection of gold artifacts from before the Spanish Conquest. They have some other artifacts as well along with a nice collection of Spanish and Costa Rican money. It was nice to see Spanish Doubloons.

The underground museum on the main square in San José is an impressive experience. There are actually three floors, each with a different theme. At the bottom is the gold museum. An incredible variety of gold jewelry from a time when no white man had set foot on the land. Countless delicate pieces of jewelry are on display and well labeled. After the gold comes the pre-historic theme with many records and depictions of the previous life of the indigenous population. One floor up again are current artist exhibitions and a shop with souvenirs.

A very interesting museum in San Jose which tell the history and culture of pre-Columbian people in the area through their artistry with metals, particularly gold. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the museum.

I rented a car when we were in San Jose...but Uber is perfect. There are many parking lots around the museum. In fact there is a very close one so that you just have to walk 100m and your there ...everywhere. Very safe walking around the area. and the cool thing is that all the main museums are close by. I bought all the tickets at once and I got discounts. I would also recommend eating at the snack bar inside the Jade Museum.

About $6 per person - don't know the children's entry fee. There is a lot of "eye-candy" to catch a young child's attention. Gold really shines! Also, many of the sculptures and carved pieces are uniquely shaped and wonderful - just remember to stay engaged - and the children will have fun learning. For a short while - then on to the next thing. The zoo is nearby. There is also a small city park a couple blocks to the southeast where children can run around a bit - just watch out for the preachers who will want to save your soul. Do be watchful for pickpockets in the area - we have never been messed with - however, we've spoken to folks who have a things snatched downtown, so be watchful and have fun!
