We had a great time at Mercado Central. If you love exploring different cultures then I highly recommend that you visit the Market. Seeing all the different foods, eateries and local goods was really fantastic. We had delicious coffees and bought some tortillas to take home which were yummy. There are definitely some touristy stalls within, but still worth a visit if you have time in SJ.

As so often in these countries, the local market is a real attraction and a huge cave of Alibaba. We find everything from food , to animals , and of course to souvenirs , not to mention the many small restaurants very typical in a cheerful atmosphere with mixtures of impressive odors .

As far as big city markets go this was a flop. Lots of eateries ( not hungry). Lots of fish/meat stands, some flowers and herbs but really nothing worth browsing. Stores are full of same trinkets you see everywhere.

Picturesque Central Market of San Jose, where they are offered from crafts, souvenirs, clothing, fruits, vegetables, species to local food. While there is security (uniformed and not) you have to move carefully as many people circulate. We bought some souvenirs and crafts and then stopped for lunch at Marisqueria and Soda "Brigitte" (a classic). There we tasted the "caldosas" (snack bag with the ceviche aggregate in the same bag, to eat the solids first and finish with the juice or "broth" of the ceviche (hence the name "caldosas"). Then we try a "Married", typical food consisting of; rooster pinto (rice with beans), sweet cabbage, fried bananas, cassava, and Creole sauce. Then choose the protein that accompanies it (beef, chicken, fish or seafood). We set off from there for La Sorbetera de Lola Mora, an emblematic place where they serve vanilla ice cream with superlative cinnamon. The walk with lunch included can last 1/2 day. It is ideal for buying typical Costa Rican things (which you only get there) for our home countries. Unmissable.

Place recognized as a tourist spot imitating the city, great gastronomic offer and souvenirs. You meet local people and visitors, enjoy the good vibe. It has good prices on souvenirs, the food is very rich, although a little delayed service. Recommended 100%

We took an Uber to Mercado Central. I want to start by saying how:clean,organized,safe, and exciting this experience was.
There is security in every entrance. There are "sodas"/eateries where you can sample typical Costa Rican foods,coffee,& desserts.
We were there for about an hour and a half. They have bathrooms that are clean. You pay 300 colones to use them.
Must come back to eat.

A true classic market where the locals get their fare. We recommend trying the ice cream (it tastes like eggnog) and some of the sodas (cafes) inside. Wear your backpack/purse or fanny pack in the front since pickpockets are around.

This came higly recommended in all the travel site, but it was a tad too crowded for me. My american kids didnt feel comfortable eating here. Its a good to just walk around for 15 mins, was just closely packed and crowded for me and I've visited markets in Asia, this was just too claustrophobic for me. Its a good spot if you want to buy souvenirs, but be prepared to bargain and bring prices down by 25%-30%.

They say to know a city you have to go to its markets. This is a very old one. I didn't find it very attractive. It is very close to the city center, it costs nothing to pass and see what they think.

Tourist trap! They wanted £45 for a small monkey teddy toy, £25 for a really mediocre cheaply made doll.
Elsewhere in the city you could buy these items for £4! Any shops where they sell any items with ‘Costa Rica’ written on them in this market… avoid!
Useful things to buy if you live there, ie some nice plants.

Basically, you have two main choices: taxi or Uber. After reading several reviews and learning about the headaches associated with taxis, we chose the latter. This was our first experience using the company; however, the process was easy. Uber drivers are professional and able to navigate the crazy traffic of the capital. Best of all, Ubers are dirt cheap (around $7-10 or so per trip depending on the time of day). Once we got downtown, we had a little trouble finding a free WI-FI signal for our phone to contact Uber for the trip back to the hotel; however, we stood on the steps outside the Gold Museum (up the street a few blocks from the Central Market) and got a signal. The downtown strip was safe with lots of families and a great learning experience. Go for it!

I am sure parking is available in the area as it is in the main tourist area with multiple attractions and museums. But as other poster said, I would just take a taxi there.

We would like to visit the market but only have Sunday to do so, I see one answer says yes open on Sunday and another that says no. From reading the reviews it appears the Mercado is closed on Sundays, is this correct?

As I remember, the market is closed on Sunday and there is not much to do as not much is open on Sunday.

We didn’t go directly from the airport but I’m guessing about 15-20 min taxi ride. Take the RED taxis in San Jose and agree on an amount before you get in the cab. We did this and always got a good deal. Met others who didn’t and they ended up paying exorbitant amounts!!

Aproximadamente unos USD 7 u 8, dependiendo del plato. Los desayunos son más baratos. El Mercado Central como tal está abierto desde las 7 am hasta las 5:30 am, pero desde las 6 am abren ciertas puertas para que entren los empleados y ciertas "soditas" (pequeños restaurantes) empiezan a funcionar a esa hora, como por ejemplo la Soda Tala.
