I went to this station to visit Cartago. Arriving in San Jose on a Saturday, I did not know that my hotel is located near this station. On Monday morning, I was awakened by the whistles the train conductors make when they cross some railroad tracks.
It was an uphill walk from my hotel to this station. Along the way are government buildings, National Museum, a park and a Children’s museum.
Passengers sit at the bench while waiting to board the electric trains. Train tickets can be purchased inside the Station or from the Train Staffs after boarding the trains. Credit cards are accepted.
Note that train rides are FREE for those who are 65 years old or older. There are several stops along the way, mostly related to universities. The last stop is in Cartago, Costa Rica. The other direction is the Heredia/Alajuela areas. Be sure to show your tickets for inspection when the staffs do their rounds.
Highly recommended to visit this station and ride their trains!

Took the train to Cartago for a short visit. Inexpensive way to get to other parts of Costa Rica. A very nice art exhibit of water colors in the cities community center.

This old railways station is interesting and everything was in good condition because there were some work of restructuring in the previous years.

Having enjoyed the fab jade and gloomy atmosphere of the Jade Museum, stroll up to Al Mercat (opens midday) for an outstanding lunch and take in this lovely old railway station on the way. It still welcomes a few trains a day, and the presence of a coffee stall means that you can get inside and enjoy the old ticket hall

Very well preserved train station that served and still serves as the main station for all the people and commerce going and coming from the port of Limón in the Atlantic. Admire the architecture and a small display of antiques. Make it part of your city tour or visit it it when you walk around the City. It is near the National Park. The visit will last 15 to 20 minutes max.

A nice historic and still in operation train station near National Park. Beautiful outside building. It is too bad that the place is locked when no trains are coming and going. It is a nice place to look at, and is also located near 17th Street pedestrian walk through government buildings and museum. Other than that, it is an old train station.

Realmente es una muy pequeña estación de trenes situada en el centro de la ciudad de San Jose , pero se las trae...uno queda atrapado en el tiempo al observar las locomotoras del siglo XIX trabajando aun y una de vapor situada a la entrada en perfecto estado recibiendo a los visitantes.

We had a short tour to Cartaga and we actually took the train back to San Jose from there. It's a well used transportation and was quite busy.
The ride was fine and we had a nice view coming back. Unfortunately we returned to San Jose in torrential rain at the height of rush hour so could not explore the station itself.

La estación se ve que ha sido remodelada sin embargo si lo que desea es viajar en tren, prepárese para un viejo movido y ruidoso. El tren en Costa Rica es bastante antiguo (se compraron los vagones a España, pero España llevaba bastantes años de haberlos sacado de circulación por estar viejos, pero ya ven, Costa Rica compra chatarra).

Non molto tempo fa, la stazione ha subito interventi di restauro che ne hanno reso più gradevole e funzionale l'aspetto. La corsia riservata ai taxi fa parte dei lavori realizzati così come la cancellata e l'esposizione di vecchi locomotori. Qualche albero recentemente piantato ne abbellisce l'aspetto.
Dall'esterno appare più moderna di quello che è ma se si vede la fila di persone in attesa del tremo sotto il sole ci si ricrede.
