I heard opera at 5 pm raining over San Jose and knew I had to go inside. Once inside I listened to old Latin records, watched a free dance class, ate and drank to my hearts content and will be coming back to listen to Jazz this weekend. One visit wasn’t enough

Great place! We enjoyed the food,drinks, music and casual atmosphere! Our waitress spoke enough english to help us with the menu. Definetly worth checking out!

Estuve de visita en la ciudad, y de verdad que busqué algún bar para tomar una cerveza y bailar o simplemente relajarme y de verdad que el mejor de la ciudad es este, asistí 2 veces en una semana y un ambiente increíble, un lugar perfecto para extranjeros y cualquier persona que guste de la buena música.

Dentor de nuestro viaje nos encontramos con este agradable lugar. Tiene gran actividad nocturna pero en general es un lugar lleno de espectáculos de todos los tipo, ocupando sus diversos horarios. Nosotros asistimos por la noche y nos topamos con un DJ de cumbia y a clases gratis de baile :) Es una excelente opción para visitar en San José.

Definitivamente si se quiere salir a disfrutar la noche, El Sótano es la mejor opción, todas las noches hay eventos distintos desde jazz subterráneo hasta punk, pasando por todos los estilos de música. Un buen lugar para disfrutar de un buen chivo (concierto), pasar con los amigos una buena noche y comer rico y tomar unas cuantas cervezas.

Un excelente sitio para conocer gente.
Tuve la oportunidad de asistir dos días seguidos.
La primera ocasión una gran fiesta de Halloween que termino de madrugada y donde tocaron "Los Cuchillos", una banda de Garage realmente buenos. Ademas de varios Dj's muy buenos de música Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae y Soul. Entre ellos un Mexicano (Yo)
La segunda ocasión fue un día después. En esta toco una banda de Costa Rica de música Ska Two Tone, muy buenos aunque no supe su nombre.
Tuve la oportunidad de asistir dos días seguidos.

I came to Costa Rica 30 years ago. I have been a dancer all of my life & great lover of the Arts in all forms. When El Sotano opened 4+ years ago, I was in sheer heaven. The moment I stepped in the door of this truly gracious, 80+ year-old, historic building, I knew I was "HOME"....such a warm and elegant place it is with it's marble foyer, high ceilings and beautiful wooden floors! I found the owner and the staff, ALL to be verycordial and welcoming.
From it's inception, the owner had the vision to create a project called "Activismo Cultural" which offers and supports all forms of original artistic expression -- music, dance, poetry, painting, sculpture, theater, etc. The quality & variety of music is superb on any given night. Monday nights are normally Blues Jams and Tuesday's are Jazz Jams, with some of the best Costa Rican & foreign musicians coming to sit in with the House Band. If you're a visiting musician, and you'd like to "sit in", they will welcome you to do so (and even waive your entrance fee!). They often have very different types of music upstairs AND downstairs, neither one interfering with the other. Through the years, I've been blown away by some of the amazing International Artists who have been booked to play there, and even more surprised by the more-than-reasonable entrance fees charged..
Very often my friends and I go there just to eat in their Cafe because their food is so delicious and inexpensive. You may wish to do the same; however, if you are planning to go for the music, I recommend that you go there at least an hour before the music is to begin so as to enjoy their Cafe's delicious food, desserts, coffee bar and/or artisan beer in a relaxed and homey atmosphere. As you can see, I am a true Fan of El Sotano/Amon Solar and it's Project "Activismo Cultural". We are truly blessed to have such a jewel in our City!!!

Dining is from 11 until 8 and the food is good but the real attraction is the music. Blues jam on Mondays. Some really good players and a really friendly of blues fans. There's a room upstairs that is a little larger but most of the action is in a tiny basement bar. The bar's name translates The Basement. Tiny stage and seating for maybe 30. Tuesdays is a jazz jam. The venue hosts all kinds of music, rock, punk, reggae just to name a few and the crowd is a pretty young, hip looking urban one that flows out onto the terrace and the street at times. On Monday and Tuesdays the average age bumps up a bit. The neighborhood is OK during the day but at it's not safe to be walking around and it would be wise to take a taxi or uber.

Hello!
This depends mostly on the event we have each night. Sometimes we have daytime events ehich are more suited for youngsters. Most of the time we have night concerts which are not so recomended for kids because of high audio levels and many people.
