We only hiked up from the city to the lookout at Croix de la Mission. Without a car or a guide, it would have been way to difficult for us to see the falls. The walk up to the Mission was enjoyable with some nice views overlooking Papeete and Moorea Island. We went up on parc biblique and came down on rue paul maz. Trip Advisor no longer promotes small public places so my review ends up here.

The waterfall was a site to behold. There was the main fall, and then there were a couple of tributaries that were also quite interesting. we had to drive through a commune to get to the waterfall and there were bulldozers moving boulders to the side of the road. Apparently, this was to prevent new years eve revellers from parking on the side off the road in the middle of the commune and creating havoc. Sometimes they have security guards at the main turnoff...

This place is magic! The three waterfall and the forest create a special environment that let you forget about everything.
The first waterfall is quite easy to get by walk, there is a dirt track but accessible to everyone. I suggest to wear shoes and not flip-flops.
The path towards the other two waterfalls is more difficult but the final show it worth the effort. You don't need to trained for trekking but take your time to go up! Absolutely impossible to do with flip-flops!

I recommend visiting the waterfall as part of a tour or, if you do the hike, do it with a guide. And I say that as someone who stubbornly always wants to do things without a guide. I'm an experienced hiker and in very good shape and I still struggled with the lower trail (the upper trail was closed when I went in October 2020 but both trails are marked difficult). First, get a ride or drive to the trailhead if you can - the walk from Papeete is about 5km and will tire you out before you even get to start hiking. You also do need to get a permit from City Hall (Mairie de Papeete) before you go, which cost about 600 cfp I think. Once at the trailhead, I gave my permit to the security guard and headed in. There's a dirt road that goes on for a while. There's one spot where you can cross the river to visit a Marae site along the way. Eventually you'll reach the actual beginning of the trail, just wide enough for one person with tons of vegetation. The landscape is absolutely magical. I was soaked most of the time between the humidity and the constant misting/raining. At a certain point, the trail starts to zig zag across the river - this is where it gets difficult. Before then, you're mostly just making your way through the tropical jungle but once you start crossing the river, it is very slippery (duh) and also hard to keep track of the trail. Some folks have left little rock piles and ribbons to help you keep track of the trail, but I still managed to lose it once or twice on my way back. I also fell in the river once or twice haha you need good shoes for hiking in wet conditions! It's definitely worth it - the landscape is gorgeous and it's a real adventure of a hike, but it would've been far less stressful for me had I been with a guide! If you go without one, be careful and respect Mother Nature while you're out there.

First you need to get a piece of paper to give you authorization to do this hike. You must go to the town hall to get this paper. Put "town hall Papeete" in google and the building that comes up is the one you want. The authorization will cost you 600 francs per person (6 dollars). You put the date you wish to go on this paper. It will ask you the time put I’d suggest saying from 7am to 5pm (open to close). The town hall is open until 3 pm on weekends only. There will be no parking close by but there is parking at the town hall. Circle it until you find the open gates to the lawn area in front. This lawn area is on the pretty side of town hall where it looks almost like a plantation mansion. Park on the lawn. You will see a grand staircase in front of you. Go up these and take an immediate right when you enter. There are ladies working at desks who will give you the paper. If you have a rental car, put "Fautaua Waterfall Papeete" in google to find out where it is. It will direct you to “fautaua valley”. Yes that is the same destination. Go there. It might have a gate blocking your entrance. Press the button. Bon jour! Ok so hopefully the dude on the other end opens it for you. He will likely chase you down as you enter. Now on to the hike. It took me 6 hours to complete the short one. That’s one hour to the head of the trail and one hour back plus two hours to the waterfall and back. You can select from two paths at the trail head. I did not go over the bridge. I continued to the shorter hike straight on. What’s the difference? Considering all the photos of a completely different waterfall on this site I’m assuming it’s just that.. a different waterfall. Now if you read this far you really want to do this so here’s some good advice. Get the most ninja bug spray you can and don't skimp out. You will thank me when you are greeted by the black hord welcoming comittee at the falls themselves. The waterfall bugs are just zillions of little black bugs. I don't think they do any harm but they will really love you. You will run into mosquito hords on the way there as well. Spiders... Yeah them too. Forget backing food unless you don’t mind eating insects. If you don’t have hiking boots I used my water sandles and they worked although your angles are in danger of getting skinned on rocks. Wear a hat. Not so much for the sun but to protect your scalp from scraping against the logs you will be ducking under. The path is not well marked. But in the end you are just following the river. Keep a look out for stacked stone that seems to signify a trail branching from the river bed. I missed a trail branch on the way down and was river walking for much of the way which is slow going and a bit treacherous. If worse comes to worse remember there is that bridge over the river at the trail head, so you can always just follow the river till you see that. The waterfall in the end made it worth the experience. I struck out at 8 am on a Sunday and didn’t see any one until I’d already swum in the waterfall pool for twenty minutes and was on my way back. Bring some plastic bags to put wet stuff in. I would have liked to have taken a mask to see what kind of animals live in the waterfall pool. P.S. You can take a tour of this same hike. I doubt it takes 6 hours for someone that knows what they are doing. But if you are going to strike out on your own at least now you have this review. Your welcome ;)

As expected, this was a site of natural beauty, well-worth the short hike it took to get within viewing range.

On a day tour around the Island we visited this waterfall.
A short walk from the parking area this waterfall and surrounds are breathtaking.
You stop at the bottom of the falls in a small clearing where you can get a great view.
Besides the main falls there are countless other smaller falls.
If you are on a tour you no doubt will visit.
Great attraction.

Beauyfull waterfall in a nice scenic environment. Especially with kids the good part is that is is easy accessible without difficult hikes or long walks. Very relaxing to sit down on a stone and see the water flow!

We did plenty of reading up on this hike before actually heading off on our own. We tried to find out about the permit needed though the City Hall was closed on Saturday and Sunday so we were unable to purchase. We had walked 8km to the head of the valley where there was a large gate blocking the road. I spoke to someone via the intercom who advised me that we did in fact need the permit to proceed. I explained that the City Hall was closed. Basically it was just not possible to continue to the falls. I said, in my halting French that this was not good at all for tourists, to which she replied “Bein Sure”, meaning “Of Course”. Extremely frustrated we walked 8km back to our accommodation.
