Quite a tough walk, or should I say climb and descent, for a good part of the track you are pulling yourself up steep inclines on tree roots, branches etc. same going down. We started at the Avarua end, the climb to the Needle takes about 1 hour, The climb down to the waterfall takes about 2 hours, crossing the stream several times. Make sure you have grippy shoes, the tree roots and rocks are quite slippery. Views from the top are great. You may meet Roger Rooster at the summit, he likes muesli bars. There are lots of ropes on the waterfall side which are a great help. The track is well marked with orange markers.
Quite a lot of mosquitos at the top, take repellant, though we never got bitten. Over all a great experience I am now in my 70's, quite fit and found it quite tiring. If you are an unfit person it may be quite exhausting. My son in law ran over it in just over 2 hours, but he is very fit. A memorable experience.

Take your time and bring water along as it gets hot quickly up there even though the walk is under cover most of the time.

A great trail to explore if your keen to see the almighty ‘needle’ up close and personal.
We completed this cross island hike North to South as most recommended - and definitely think this is the best approach. Much less technical descending the South end and as a bonus you finish at the waterfall.
The views were okay, great if you are brave enough to climb to the top of the needle.
However, I’d recommend Te Manga over this walk.

We did this walk because it was there to do. Got dropped off by car in Avarua and trekked to the end coming out by the old Sheraton Hotel. The signage at the car park is not great. Took off up the wrong driveway at first as no clear indication. Take the middle one toward the water tower. It had rained the night before so track was quite slippery coming down. They do have ropes but you are so busy watching your feet for much of the trip that you forget to enjoy it. The sign at the top to the lookout is a bit faded and they don't give times. The needle was a laugh with resident roosters pecking about for crumbs from snacking hikers. To be fair, I am not the fittest so found it quite hard going. Sneakers were a bit slippery to wear. There was a bit of guessing to find the track at times, but we figured it out. Took about 3 hours to come out at the Waterfall. But we did it and felt pleased. It wasn't easy but a 20 minute walk to Wigmores store for a giant $3 ice cream at the end made it all better.

This walk show's more about Rarotonga than just driving around and swimming. Walk across the Island with Maunga Tours and learn about the Island and it life energy.

This walk isn’t for the faint hearted! We did the walk from the north. We walked up to the needle and back down the same way. A fair level of fitness is required for this walk. The track is very steep in parts! If you choose to go right up to the view point, there are chains and ropes to help you up (be careful! But worth the view). Would recommend

I highly recommend the Safari tour. Lots of fun and a little thrill on the steep 4-wheel track to the lookout. But it also takes you on the inside road to see the "real Rarotonga", including sampling fruit straight off the trees on the way around.

Great walk! Not as hard as everyone says if youre reasonably fit. Went North to South. There had been quite heavy rain 2 days prior to us going but we didnt find it particularly muddy. Would recommend!

Great walk, we went south to north despite repeatedly being told we should do it the other way for fear of getting lost. Just before we did the cross island walk someone must have been through putting markers to allow people to do it the other way. In fact I think the track was better signposted the way we went. The main advantage of doing it from a avarua would be the swim at wigmores. Not an easy walk and would not recommend if you are not fit. Don't do on Sundays if you are relying on the bus as currently the Sunday bus isn't going

Very challenging tramp for even moderately experienced trampers. Do not underestimate. Best to go from north to south as the southern track is really slippery and easier going down rather than up. Having said all this we loved the experience. The distance is nothing and the terrain is everything! And we saw that rooster at the top. He was so friendly and made our day.

Hi. The trail is not brilliant from the point of view of being obvious or sign posted. Also its condition can at best described as poor. But take the positive from it as it adds to the adventure and the experience. Also, I think taking a guide would be a total waste of money.

Where did you park your car? I have heard that it can take a lot longer for other people so I’m curious, did you just climb up and back to your car or did you have someone drop you off and pick you up?

Would it be worth doing this track if there have been thunderstorms a couple of days before? I'm thinking of doing it this Monday. The weather on the weekend looks like there might be thunderstorms at some stage. I'm keen to do it but if It's going to be too muddy and unpleasant I might leave it .
Also would you recommend just doing half the track to the needle then returning to the start? rather than doing the whole track and finding transport at the end?

My husband and I would really like to do this trek during our June trip but after reading the reviews, I am concerned with fitness levels and heat. We can both complete a 5K run but have little upper body strength. I tend to get overheated easily when it's hot outside. Do you think we would have issues?

Hi,
Might be too late to answer this one for you, I've been away and busy so apologies. My advice would be take it easy with this walk, leave early in the morning and make sure you have plenty of water with you. It's tough in some spots and not well indicated either so no need to rush. Take extra care if there has been rain the night or few days prior. My Dad did it and he was pushing 70 so, it can be done. Just take care, watch where you put your feet and help each other out and you'll be fine. Hope this helps. Cheers

I suggest you check out the availability of a guided tour - lonely planet recommends this - check with the tourist office - it is also recommended that you walk north - south as you likely to get lost walking north from Wigmore's - there is a very good description of the track in the LP. busses run in both directions and stop basically wherever you want them to - you can pick up the bus timetable & map at the airport or the tourist office or possibly where you are staying. So as you have been advised - there is no bus service to the centre of the island - you are looking at several - probably about a 3 hour hike with stops to get to the centre of the island - the island is a volcanic mountain and is very steep towards the centre.

Its a walk, the cost is maybe a pair of shoes.
You can take a guide with Pa, he is awesome and will teach you lots as you go.

I've always done it without a guide, but compared to NZ doc tracks, it is pretty hard going. But after a weeks worth of cocktails and dining out, very needed
