Challenging, but so rewarding!
2021年7月 • 夫妻情侣
We read that this was THE activity to do, while in Raro. We agree! It’s a challenging hike, especially, coming down. We ended up at the amazing waterfall. I’m not good with directions. So, you’ll have to work that out for yourself. Coming down was slippery, due to some showers earlier. Proper hiking boots/shoes are advised. It took as about 3-4 hours, as we stopped a lot to take photos. Amazing views, from the ‘Needle’, when you get to the top. Definitely a must do!

Up and over.
This is a sharp but relatively quick climb up to Te Rua Manga from the North, with the final 50 metres using chains. These are well secured and shouldn't be a problem for those without fears of heights. The descent on either side is more tricky due to the slippyness of the tree roots you are clambering down.

The views are fairly narrow from the top, and there are other harder peaks on Raro that provide more expansive vistas.

2 hour trip for the fit and experienced, could be double that for others.

Turn left at the end of the road on the South side to get to Wigmores supermarket... and ice cream.

Great view
Great hike to what is probably the best known landmark on the island. The hike starts south of the harbour in town. There are signs marking the beginning of the Cross Island Hike which goes past the Needle. Guided hikes are available or you can pick up a guide book @ the Bounty bookstore. I found the guide book reasonably accurate even though it is about a decade old. You need good quality, closed toed shoes and take lots of water. No flip flops unless you enjoy pain. Also, avoid going if it’s rained recently or threatening to rain. The trail can be very slippery with lots of exposed roots. Most of the trail is fairly easy but there are 3 fairly steep scrambles where you will probably need to pull yourself up by grabbing on to roots. A hiking stick would be useful, especially when going down. Once you get to the top of the ridge, the are some good places sit down and enjoy the view and have a snack. Believe it or not, you will probably be joined by feral chickens looking for a share. The view from base of the needle is fantastic. You can see across the island from north to south. Nice breeze at the top to cool you off. There is a chain attached to the north side of the needle to climb to an upper view point but you are warned not to. It is a long vertical drop before you bounce so don’t over estimate your ability. The view from the top is worth the effort. The south part of the trail to Wigmore Falls was closed.

It's the climb!

Wow! A challenging but rewarding climb. Due to works on the south side we climbed the north half and went back down the same way. I wouldn't recommend going if it has been raining lots but a little bit as we had wasnt too bad. There are times during the walk where you will probably be climbing hand to foot to get up in the tree roots but the tree root system is strong and definately helps. At the top you can use a chain to climb to a viewing spot on the needle. Challenging for myself as I am unfit but the others I was with managed relatively easily with a few slips along the way. We also enjoyed the company of a couple of dogs all the way up and down which was nice.

Hiked up needle mountain

We hiked up needle mountain while in Rarotonga. We are both pretty fit and found this relatively easy however it is a steep incline in humid conditions and no set path so you will be climbing up tree roots and rocks along the way. Need to use the installed ropes and chains to get up the final part but it isn't as scary as it looks! Its is absolutely worth it for the view at the end. No safety fences or anything so might be a tough one if you struggled with heights. I'd consider it a must do if you are visiting!

Ok but no amazing
Lots of great reviews about the needle hike however we find it just be ok. For us a great hike is a interesting trail, sights along the way and a great final destination. This hike had 1 of the 3. The trail was interesting as there were some steep areas that were all roots which was very cool. There were no go sights along the trail as the views were obstructed by trees. The needle itself is ok but nothing amazing and the views from their are just ok. We were not able to do the cross island trek as it was closed due to construction at the Papau waterfall. It took us 2.5 hours return.

Adventure plus!
Pa's Trek was fabulous! Not for the faint hearted, quite steep and challenging in some places, make sure you bring insect repellent, a hat and lots of water. A good to excellent level of fitness needed. The Needle can be daunting if you have a fear of heights, however you can still enjoy the view. The waterfall at the end was lovely but spoilt by others who had left litter there. The sandwiches provided at the end were simply delicious!!! Word of warning, do not, whatever you do, do this trek with one too many beers the night before!

It can be challenging

I did the cross island hike starting in downtown. Hike in is about 3k to trail head. BRING HYDRATION when l went it was 8am but not a puff of wind and 27 degrees. It's a muddy slimy walk even after a couple of days of no rain. I took a tumble on the rocks on 2nd creek crossing. Trail is not well marked so easier if you have more people thus more eyes looking for path markers. Takes about 3 hours or less. Go to the needle. I thought you'd see the circumference of island but not high enough. I'm 61 but hike lots in Rockies... be in shape to attempt this hike or can be dangerous.
