From the cruise ship, we had a river raft day on the Chilkat river.we were in a group of probably 28 people. Evan was our guide and oh so knowledgeable. We saw so many bald eagles in the preserve and even Amin flight bald eagle fight. What a thrill. My only problem was all the clothes I was wearing to keep warm and then the heavy poncho, life preserver and rubber boots that felt like lead, that I could barely move. But what a great day thanks to Evan. I was wearing a lot of clothes because being from south Florida, Alaska was very cold for me.

We had the privilege to be led through the bald eagle preserve by these passionate and dedicated guides from the Chilkat Guides group. They are fully professional, knowledgeable and committed to showing the travellers as much as they can. They love their jobs, where they live and what they do. From that amazing man, Tom Lang, to our wonderful bus driver, Kate, and our incredible boat man, all of whom live there by choice, there cannot be a more amazing group of people in wild Alaska.
Would I go back?
In a flash - if I thought I could do it all again......
We are not young people but were cared for the same as everyone else.
It is a safe and wonderful experience.

We had a great time on this trip. Our guide was a lot of fun and very knowledgeable about the area and river. The only down side was we didn't see as many eagles as I'd like but that is the nature of wildlife - I don't blame the company. I'm sure if our visit coincided with the salmon runs we would have seen lots of bald eagles. Overall we had a great 2.5 hours on the river and would do it again!!

This is unique! Thank goodness it is preserved. Pristine beauty and nature at its best! The river is beautiful, the trees are superb and the mountains are breathtaking !

We did the rafting trip right before the salmon runs. We still saw quit a few eagles. There where gorgeous views and the guides were extremely knowledgeable. It was a low key slow float. It should be on your must do list.

Relaxing float down the Chilkat. Tom Evans was outstanding as our guide. He worked hard rowing us down river, told good stories about the river, the Preserve, Alaska history, pointed out the huge eagle nests & of course eagles perched in the trees. Tom & the other guides run a very organized business: mud boots, ponchos & life jackets were provided, also tasty sandwiches before we got on the river, then delicious cookies & coffee/hot chocolate after the trip, excellent safety instructions were provided, very safe, yet good fun in a beautiful part of our world.

We did see some eagles, but not as many as we had hoped for. But the area was wild and beautiful and we did see bears and moose

Wonderful work done here. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is my aversion to seeing the huge eagles penned. It's a large enclosure and were told the birds have issues that would NOT allow them to survive in the wild, but my anthropomorphic opinion is they'd sooner soar and die than remain penned up. The exhibits are extraordinary. Don't let my qualms keep you from checking this place out.

An early start for the trip from Skagway to Haines to visit the eagle preserve, but well worth it.
It was cold out on the river so take up the offer of extra layers and waterproofs!
Really enjoyed this trip and whilst we didn't see many eagles, we were fortunate enough to see trumpet swans, bears and a moose!
The team looking after us were all friendly and knowledgeable.
Enjoyed a tasty light lunch at the preserve before heading back to the ferry for Skagway.
We booked the excursion via the cruise ship so don't know if it was cheaper to book direct?

If you want to take a leisurely raft float and take in beautiful scenery then take this trip. Saw a few eagles and learned a little about the area. Glad we went.

Hi there
We will be there late August 2019 on a cruise excursion. I've been advised not to do the float trip as there won't be many eagles around int he preserve at that time. Would really appreciate your advice as I'll have my 75 year old Mum with me and won't want to put her through any unnecessary activity like a 4 hour boat or raft trip if that if not a good time to go, so we can choose another activity. Thanks so much and hope you don't mind the question!

As other have said it is a nice ride but you won’t see many eagles. We had a much better time doing an excursion through a 3rd party. We were in Skagway 2 days and took the ferry to Haines both days. Once to do this trip and once to do a trip to the Chilkoot river to see bears. The bear trip was a hundred times better and we saw eagles then as well. The river trip although comfortable was very cold. We were there in late August as well. The excursion was called wildlife safari and bear viewing. The salmon are running on the chilkoot in late August.

Do the tours with rafts or river hard bottom boats offer any significant differences? We are trying to decide which one to go on in August. TIA

I am not aware of any hard bottom boat tours offered on this tour. Our rafts were 18ft long and almost new. You sit on the side of the raft as the tour guide paddles. There is no white water. It was a very comfortable ride for us in our 70s. Have fun!

I went with Rainbow Glacier Adventures. Did all their available tours and they're all amazing. If you want to see bears, go on their bear viewing tour!

There will be some eagles in the area in July but the massive gathering of 4000+ is in late fall. Seeing the eagles from the water on a boat makes some sense but I have seen large numbers of eagles from pullouts along the highway.
What is the best time to see Eagles am or pm?

We were there about midday early September 2015 and there was no problems seeing eagles. As the guide said, if you see a golfball in a tree in the distance, it's an eagle!
My wife it's planning a photography tour in November. It's there any fly fishing for salmon at this time, or is there a better time?
Can you recommend a guide service that could answer more detailed questions on fly fishing in and around Haines.

I have a nice DSLR, how much do I have to worry about getting it wet. Avery curious.

There are eagles in May but not very many. The best way to get close enough for a photo is to go on a rafting trip. The eagles don't seem to mind the rafts as much as a person on foot. These are float trips so DSLR's are fine as long as you don't drop it overboard. A 200 mm lens with image stabilization would be best for shooting from a moving target.

Both answers are correct. There is a lovely museum, but the real event is on the river in the fall when the is a warm upwelling of water that allows the birds to fish in the winter.
