Dave was a fantastic tour leader. The way he handled the logistics of getting from Homer to Hallo Bay showed that he has great experience with these adventures. But his real skill is when we are in the field, seeing the bears and experiencing how they live and interact. He shared his knowledge of bear behavior through his words and actions. I learned a great deal about bears as he spoke and then observing the bears do what Dave just spoke about.
The most thrilling part of the trip was when we would go into the field and Dave would get us to a spot with bears all around us. We would sit and watch bears who were maybe 70 to 80 yards away, START WORKING THEIR WAY TOWARDS where we were sitting. Dave spoke to us in a low, calm voice about what we should do and it was just magical as we watched the bears approach us and pass by close enough for us to see how their hair was matted, or the grass blades they were chewing.
Dave is one of the best guides I have had the pleasure of hiring for a tour.

We did an all day bear viewing tour with Beluga Air and their partner, Dave from AK Adventures (Dave was our guide and Wes flew the plane.) It was really just spectacular. We had no idea we could get so close to these bears but with Dave's excellent guiding we quietly observed them as the stood in the stream feasting on salmon, snoozing in the grass and foraging for berries. We also saw a mama bear with three small cubs! Wes flew us in great style in his DeHavilland Beaver float plane, a wonderful memory for all of us. We felt like we were in the best hands with great attention to our safety and comfort, lots of information about the region and lots of bear viewing. Be sure to go prepared with layers, rain gear, binoculars and we found two pairs of socks especially helpful in the waders that they provide. Thank you Wes and Dave!

This trip was the highlight of our time in Alaska! It started with a float plane with Beluga Air - Wes is a great pilot and very informative as we traveled to Katmai. Dave is the best of the best to guide you to see the bears! He has extensive knowledge and we enjoyed learning about these incredible bears. Words cannot adequately describe the awe of being able to walk among the bears!! We were able to see two Momma bears - one with 3 yearling cubs and one with 3 cubs born in January. This is truly the trip and experience of a lifetime!

This was a phenomenal day of bear watching. From the initial float plane ride with Beluga Air to the bears and the scenery, I couldn't have dreamed of a more perfect day. I felt so lucky to see so many bears and to have such a friendly and knowledgeable guide, thank you Dave! If you are interested in wild animals and wild places, this is a must do! I never once felt unsafe (after the first stream crossing that is). And we had a lovely, lovely day. Capped off by the fact that it was clear skied the whole day!

Drew Hamilton is an excellent and experienced guide. We took 2 separate trips with him to Hallo Bay, Katmai National Park for an outstanding experience in seeing and interacting with grizzly bears. Drew taught us bear biology and behavior while getting incredible up-close access to bears for viewing and photography.

We just returned from an incredible day tour with AK Adventures! From the time of booking to our tour, Dave was responsive, friendly, and informative. Drew (our guide for the day) was incredibly knowledgeable about bears, the region, and photography tips! We can not recommend them enough; can’t wait to return!

Just wanted to say thank you again for a wonderful adventure with the bears on Saturday, June 10th!
As I visited with Lena about the trip earlier today, I told her that there was never any moment that I felt afraid, uncomfortable or concerned. And I mainly contribute that to you….
Your many years of experience and understanding of bear behavior, your instruction of safety guidelines, and your diligent management of the group to the safety instructions throughout the excursion… I always felt I was in good hands! I completely trusted your judgment. Since you never became alarmed, I never had a need for alarm.
Yet, if I had been there with the same group, but without your presence… I am certain it would not have been the same. There were moments in time that I might have reacted differently without your calming presence.
You really made it a great and most memorable experience!
So thank you again! I hope we have another opportunity to explore bear country with you in the future!

The pilot, Wes, was so professional and so calming. I think this was the best flying experience i've ever had. Dave, the bear expert, is extremely professional and knowledgable. We felt very safe with him and we learned so much about Brown Bears and wildlife biology in general. There were other tours operating in the area that we went to and we definitely felt like we were with the best group. We actually got to walk around and see the bears from different angles!

Dave walked me and my girlfriend around the coastal meadows of Katmai National Park in June 2015 (not 2016 as below but I have just joined the site). I had seen grizzly bears before in the wild and was very much looking forward to observing them at close quarters in Katmai. My girlfriend was more nervous about the experience, but she need not have been. From the moment that we started walking around the meadows, she felt right at ease. I think the highlight was sitting on a log eating a ham sandwich whilst counting dozens of bears grazing across the meadows, including a mother and 3 cubs just in front of us. Dave was very professional and knowledgable. If I make it up to Alaska again, I intend to join for the longer trip. I do not hesitate to recommend Dave and the AK Adventures team.

How do I explain how incredible this trip was?! My dad and I have done day-trips with Dave, but this was our first ever overnight! Dave was prepared, knowledgable, and excited to share the bears with us! Every day was a new adventure. We saw a momma bear and her two yearling cubs every day, ran into a playful little fox, saw copious amounts of bald eagles catching salmon, and watched the tide bring the seals in to hunt fish. Dave is incredibly connected to the bears, and understands the benefit of keeping space between us and them for the benefit of both species. He was incredibly helpful in adjusting camera settings, pointing out good shots, and letting us enjoy the scene of bears! I can say wholeheartedly, the experience was one that I will treasure forever, and I could not imagine bear viewing with anyone as knowledgable, easy going, and safe as Dave!

Considering this adventure with family to celebrate cancer recovery. Our party would be 10 people (6 adults and children 2, 5, 8, and 12. Do you allow young children?

We'd really like to take your day tour to view bears and other wildlife in Katmai National Park, but there doesn't appear to be any pet day care in the community. Do you know of anyone that would keep a well-mannered, friendly Labradoodle for the day while we take the tour? Thanks for your help.
