It is well worth it to get on a smaller boat to head into the Tracy Arm fjord. The twin Sawyer glaciers were stunning and truly the entire excursion was incredible. Wildlife and so many waterfalls and icebergs… Probably one of the favourite things I’ve done in Alaska.

Our visit to Sawyer Glacier was part of our Lindblad/Natl Geographic Cruise. We were able to approach the glacier on zodiac boats and get very close (about 1/4 mile) from the base of the glacier. Saw harbor seals and mountain goats. Vastly impressive sight that takes your breath away.

We sailed along Tracy Arm Fjord in the beautiful Queen Elizabeth. The journey to the glacier was casual taking around forty minutes - not as cold as I thought but a warm drink, a sun-lounger and a warm blanket was all we needed to enjoy the majesty of the surroundings. Hard to put into words really, beautiful.
Fortunately our expert Alaskan pilot took us to the face of the glacier. The blues of the ice, snow compounded over a few hundred years, against the turquoise/green waters of the fjord are a sight only appreciated in person. Sea Lions played in the water seemingly oblivious to our presence - wonderful.

There are two parts to this glacier and we saw both. We took the 8-hour boat ride out of Juneau and it was very well done by Allen Marine Tours. A good boat tour will include slowing when near the small icebergs floating by, being close to a waterfall or two and even possible whale or mountain goat sightings. Be sure to wear layered clothing as it can be cold in the open even if it is not when you leave Juneau.

This is a beautiful glacier with lots of iceberg way out in the channels before you even get up to the glacier. We saw mountain goat and bears on the way to it.

We saw Sawyer Glacier from a private excursion boat we boarded from our cruise ship. I am so thankful we booked this trip! The ride to the glacier was gorgeous. We saw beautiful turquoise icebergs, seals lounging on them, bears climbing down the mountain, enormous waterfalls, and when we got to Sawyer Glacier a 20 ft hunk of ice calved from it! Unbelievable! On our ride back to the ship we enjoyed Glacier Margaritas!

We took the Tracey Arm Fjord full day boat tour and this was the highlight of our trip! We were super lucky because we had a full sun day, and we were also super lucky to see orcas in the water and more than one ice calving from Sawyer Glacier into the water! This fulfilled my bucket list that I was hoping for on our Alaska trip!

Words can't decribe the Glacier. The blue ice is worth the trip in. We got to see Sea Lions up close and got to witness the birth of a new iceburg. A must see.

I was expecting something much larger than what we saw. I expected the glacier to be much taller. We got close and had a great view but again, not what I was expecting.
