We didn’t take a tour, just stopped in on our own, based on recommendations. There are some interesting totems. I especially like the one honoring Lincoln.

Reviewing the Ultimate Saxman Experience: Cultural Showcase, Native Crafts & Culinary Tasting, August 2024. Nice people - however . . . A good concept but misleading in its advertising. Designing and painting a native ornament. Not! Painting wood with a Saxon design that could have come from Hobby Lobby. Chef led culinary demonstration. What chef? Three course menu of Alaskan delicacies. Good soup but . . . This was a tour that with some effort could be interesting and worthwhile - but not now.

Totem pole history through our guide’s presentation. One of the premier sites for observing them is here. Whether thy were to record unfulfilled promises as in the case of one dedicated to Secretary Seward or the story of a family, the stop is a must!

Saxman Village had several totem poles, a short trail through a rain forest and a gift shop. Tod, our tour guide, told us about the different poles and was also very informative about the city of Ketchikan.

We visited several different ports on a cruise through the inside passage, and Ketchikan was by far the best. Very cute little town, lots of great shops with works from local native artisans, and some good dining options. Highly recommend visiting the Saxman native village to learn about the long history of the native tribes, their customs and the whys and hows of totem poles. Super interesting!

We went here as part of a trip organised by our cruise ship. What a disappointment. The guide started his talk when only a handful of people had got off the coach and could not be heard due to the engine noise coming from the coach. We went in to watch the singing and dancing show which was underwhelming to say the least. The dancers showed little enthusiasm, one had her baby in a baby carrier throughout, and another thought it appropriate to chew gum!
The talk about the totems was interesting as was the carving workshop, but very little carving was carried out.
In summary. Very expensive and 3rd rate.

Did the tour from Celebrity as part of the Alaskan cruise. Really interesting tour about the native people, great dance performance, tour of the totem pole workshop to see the master craftsmen and explanation of all the totem poles and their history. There is also a nice little gift shop - all set in a lovely location. Big thank you to Arnold our guide who was wonderful - very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Thank you.

We were brought here as part of a cruise; it's informational enough but not as pretty as another nearby similar park. It has a very short walk through some woods if you care to do that.

This was the only place we saw in Ketchikan as 5 Cruise ships were in port at the same time. Saxman was interesting but rushed, obviously to accomodate the Tourists coming there for the day. The story about the Totem poles was good the Guide very knowledgeable. A little overpriced for the time spend there.

This is an excursion not to be missed. Thanks to our knowledgeable, charming native tour guide Arnold, we had the most enriching experience visiting the Saxman Native American Village.

Interested in taking Saxman Native Village &Ketchikan City Tour. Can someone guide me about tour operators that's also reasonable or can we do this on our own.We are taking Celebrity cruise .

We got our tours through Expedia. Bought a package that included Juneau and Ketchikan city tours for a little over $100. Our tour guide was of Indian discent, who gave us a detailed history of the totem poles. This he learned From a tribe elder.

Are there guides at Saxman Native Village? We would be interested in taking the bus there, and would like to tour with a guide, and include the clan house and dancers. Can we take the bus and purchase tickets to get in with a guide?

At the time I visited, at the end of the season, there was only one person on duty to answer questions. During the summer, I think there might be more guides on site, especially for the lodge.

everything depends on how many cruise ships are in town and what their departure time is. on most days will be open till about 3 however you will not find authentic art there. if you are interested in authentic art you need to go to a place such as Crazy Wolf near Creek Street.

Our tour in September was also through the cruise ship and we were taken into the Clan House and given a show and into the carving house. We were disappointed with both. The history is interesting. I will point out our trip was at the end of the tourist season but still we paid far more than we felt it was worth.

Their website states entrance fee is $5 if you come in your own (not apart of a cruise shore tour). I am an Alaskan resident and went on July 4 while visiting Ketchikan and they waived me thru with no charge.
I walked the 2 miles from town and back as was slovenly day and there were salmon berries to pick and eat along the way.
I highly recommend going to Totem Bight State Historical Park vs this place in Saxman. I was disappointed in the condition of the park, the very minimal number of totem poles, and that it was a waste of time.

I really don't know. We were on a cruise ship and we paid the tour price which included the bus, the tour of the Village and the Bight Totem Pole Park and the dance presentation by the Tlingit people.

Take the Silver Line bus south to Saxman. Just ask the driver, they are very helpful. You can catch it at the Federal Building, a salmon colored building, about 3 blocks from the docks. The crossing guards will get you to a bus stop, no worries.

Totem Bight was the better historical visit by far. it is a beautiful setting and informative items along the trails throughout. A wheelchair route is also available.
