My dive history:
Instructor
Over 2500 dives
Dive travel time away from the USA is 102.5 weeks
This was our first time in Fakarava and weren't sure what to expect. We were set up with Top Dive through our travel agent as it came as a package deal with our resort, which was Havaiki Lodge. This review will be on Top Dive and what to expect from the diving (see the bottom for the diving). If you wish to see what I think of the resort please refer to the review on their Trip Advisor page.
Top Dive would have only received two stars from me had it not been for the dive guide we had, which was Elmer. Elmer, who is actually a citizen of Columbia, was a very friendly and happy go lucky type of guy even though he struggled with English at times. While on the boat he was extremely attentive to our needs and paid close attention to our safety underwater.
My problems with the dive shop were the overcrowding of the boats (up to 12 divers on a rubber boat) at times and the handling of gear. We bring our own gear and tend to dive higher end regulators. When the gear was loaded on and off the boats, one captain in particular was extremely rough at times and almost appeared as though he was throwing it around.
When the dive is done you are required to take your BCD off while in the water and the dive guide then hands it up to the boat captain. The diver can then hold onto a rope hanging from the side of the boat until it is their time to climb the ladder. This all works fine, but there was one incident when the dive guide was handing my BCD up and the weight pocket was caught on a side rope. This caused the weight pocket to get pulled out and drop to the bottom of the ocean. There was no retrieving the pocket due to currents. The captain, who at the time was the shop manager, never said sorry and only replied with, "It shouldn't have fallen out so easily." In other words my equipment was blamed and not their system of ropes that hang from the side or the procedure they use. I didn't expect them to buy me a new weight pocket, but an apology would have been nice.
We were diving on Christmas day and there was an employee of the shop pleasure diving with us. The employee who identified himself as an instructor was diving with a rebreather. Not sure what it was about me that he did not like, but he was obviously trying to show me that he was the alpha male. While on our surface interval, we were all standing on a beach and we were discussing rebreathers. It came out that I am also rebreather trained and he asked what model I am trained on. I told him it was the Poseidon MK7 and he replied, "You are kidding, I thought they were out of business." This reply was obvious that he was trying to show me I was stupid in my choice of rebreathers and only the model that should ever be used is the one he dives with. Later before the second dive we were about to do a back roll and he points to the defog bottle attached to my BCD and says, "What is that? Is that for avalanches?" It was obvious what it was and he was trying to embarrass me in front of everyone else on the boat. Based upon his facial expression and the tone of voice it was almost like he was challenging me. It should be noted that after the rebreather discussion I had not said a word to him again. Thank god we never saw him again.
Lastly, I really felt like no one in the shop other than our dive guide, Elmer, was very friendly with us. There were several instances where we saw staff around the island and not once did they say hello or try to speak with us. I would like to say maybe they didn't recognize us but we had been diving with them for nine days and each time we ran into them on the island they were standing three feet behind us at the market for over five minutes.
Now for the diving. Expect super strong currents and decent visibility (80-120 feet). Expect lots of sharks (over 300 on most dives), but don't expect beautiful coral reefs or a lot of diversity. Do expect huge schools of larger fish that when the school moves it appears as though the floor is moving. Do not expect much from macro. This is an extremely hard place to rate as it was very different than usual with the sharks being the main draw. We saw mostly gray reef, with a few white tip and nurse sharks. We also say one silver tip, one tiger shark and a shark they called a black fin (never seen one before). Also, when snorkeling or along the coasts there are tons of black tip reef sharks. Although it was mostly sharks we never got bored even after 18 total dives. We will definitely go back some day.

The diving here was amazing. You have to use Nitrox because of the depth and amount of time. Not a problem for us but just letting you know. You really need to be an advanced diver due to depth and current to do this dive. The variety and amount of sharks swimming through the pass was unbelievable! I have never seen so many sharks swimming together in one place. This is a dive site like nothing I have seen before. We also saw manta rays.
The dive master did a great job of explaining what to expect and did a good job managing the dive while in the water. There was some strong current in places but he knew how to maneuver it. He kept checking everyone’s air consumption and making sure everyone was safe.
Diving is from zodiac boats and the ride to the dive site is about 20 minutes. You don’t come back to the shop between dives.
I would definitely recommend Top Dive Fakarava for experienced divers.

On a cruise with friends on two catamarans, Olivia our hostess, also a diving instructor in Polynesia, managed to convince me to get back in the water by re-explaining the basics. In Fakarava South, Greg advised me to do a Refresh despite my AOW and my 150 dives. He saw the complicity I had with Olivia and understood that I wanted to do the Refresh with her. So he offered to do my Refresh and assist us. Thanks to him for his good advice and Olivia for her patience given my difficulties in emptying my mask. She managed to restore my self-confidence and looked out for me throughout this magnificent dive into the current amid sharks. After this great experience, she advised us to dive at the north pass and organized everything for us. But at the last moment, Sébastien the new director of operations asked him 10,000 francs for the two dives we planned to do together while Greg the day before had not charged him anything. Olivia kindly explained that having had to deal with unexpected dispensations and already knowing the North Pass for having worked there, she preferred to cancel the dives, but strongly recommended doing them. I told her I didn’t want to dive without her because it was with her that I felt comfortable and if she didn’t dive, I wouldn’t dive. Laurent who had dived the day before with Olivia and Greg also wanted us to dive together and told him that he did not want to dive alone, so we preferred to cancel. When our captain learned that Sebastian asked Olivia for 10,000 francs while she was taking clients for two more dives, not to mention the ones we were planning to do in Rangiroa and Bora Bora at Top Dive where Olivia had advised us to go since she had worked there, he told Olivia to tell Sebastien that he was disappointed and that he would not send anyone, which annoyed Sebastian who took it as blackmail. My husband so happy that I was back in the water then insisted on fixing the problem by offering Olivia dives so that she could dive with me, which she initially refused but at our insistence, eventually accepted. But Sebastien did not want us, claiming that the captain had threatened her and that the instructor wanted to dive for free. He was obnoxious to her, which shocked us deeply. Perhaps we should explain to this gentleman who has no sense of hospitality, service or business that the captain did not threaten him in any way. He just told his hostess to let her know that he was disappointed with her uncommercial behaviour and that he would not send anyone. Sebastian does not seem to have grasped that Olivia never asked to dive for free. She's taking clients. Any Centre Manager with a bit of intelligence and savoir vivre would not only have offered him a commission, but above all would have let him dive for free with his clients who insisted on diving with him. Sébastien also did not have the presence of mind to offer us a private monitor which would have solved the problem. On two dives he could have won Top Dive 90,000 francs. Instead, apart from being execrable with our hostess and our captain, he lost a lot of money to the company that employs him. Our captain told us that he had been told that he was c..., and that indeed he was much more c... than he had been told...! Escape this dive center where the operations manager with an inordinate ego prefers to put his personal interests and pride before those of Top Dive and customers who would leave him a lot of money and who were happy to offer his dives to Olivia who had not only organized everything for us but who had mostly managed to restore my confidence.

After diving with Topdive Fakarava, we felt compelled to share our experience. While there were some positives, significant issues prevent us from recommending this dive center.
Positives
+ Excellent Communication and Organization: Topdive communicates clearly, and their operations run smoothly.
+Adjustments to Dive Schedules: They make an effort to adapt dive times according to the currents, which enhances the diving experience—a practice we found unique and effective.
Negatives
1. Guide Selection and Conduct
Rude and Aggressive Guide Behavior: On our first day at the south pass, our guide, Helmer, was notably rude and abrasive. He ended our dive prematurely, allowing us only 15-20 minutes in the main channel before drifting through shallow reefs, surfacing after just 45 minutes. This was despite all divers having ample air and no decompression time remaining. Although our feedback to the manager was taken seriously and seemed to have an impact, we later learned from a friend that similar issues had been reported with this guide in previous weeks.
Unsafe Diving Practices with Uncertified Divers: We were disturbed to learn that uncertified divers were taken to depths of 30 meters, despite this being their first open water experience. The couple reported informing both the guide and the dive center about their lack of certification, yet they were still led to dangerous depths, causing one diver to panic. This kind of irresponsibility puts lives at risk.
2. Disregard for Marine Environment
Apart from Helmer, other guides demonstrated a lack of respect for marine conservation. In the south pass, amidst pristine coral formations, a French guide encouraged divers to hold onto and even lie down on delicate coral structures. This behavior continued at a manta station, where guides allowed divers to kick and damage corals. In one instance (as shown in the attached photo), we observed extensive coral damage due to careless finning. When we questioned this approach, the guide dismissed our concerns.
3. Sexual Harassment Incident
On our first day, an alarming incident occurred. One of the guides, who was responsible for driving everyone home, invited one of our friends (a female diver) to come to his house while we were still present. She was the last passenger in the jeep, left alone with him. He then stopped at his home and asked her to come inside. When she declined, he made it clear he expected her to visit him at his workplace (the hospital) in the following days for a drink. For context, this guide is over 60, and she is in her thirties, having shown no interest in him. This behavior was unprofessional and deeply uncomfortable.
In summary: This could be a great divecenter if the get their selection of guides right. It is like night and day compared to TOPDIVE Rangiroa. We will come back to Fakarava but definitely not to Topdive Fakarava.

Went on two dives with Top Dive with incoming current. First to bottom at 95 feet second to a little over 100 feet. Tanks were Nitrox 35%. The guide had us follow him to bottom and hold on to the rocks in swift current to watch sharks a ways away. He stayed there quite a while. On the second deeper dive, our O2 fraction went to over 1.4 as we were below the recommended depth for 35% nitrox. The NDL time on my computer went to zero on the second dive, luckily computer did not progress into deco mode and we left soon after. I was uncomfortable being that deep with 35% nitrox and going to zero on NDL, but there was no shallower spot to go, and to bail, all you could do was let go and be carried alone by the current through the pass and off into the lagoon without an SMB as they did not offer those to us. Nor did they warn us that the dive would go beyond recommended limits. I have been on 100s of guided dives around the world and never has a guide pushed the limits like that before - it has always been the rule to do everything possible to avoid going into deco and to conservatively manage O2 fraction. If you are comfortable with these risks, the dives are very good. I was not.

Just completed a series of great dives at Fakarava North pass. The Ali Baba site was unequaled to that in any dive we have had before in the amount & variety of fish life. We dived with Top Dive a group we would recommend. Our special thanks to Helmer who went out of his way to make sure we saw the best.

A week in Fakarava. We had scheduled 6 dives (3 successive). Our dive master, Helmer, thought that we all had 1000 dives under our belt and that we wanted to do extreme dives....result: it was so grueling that I had cramps and I had to I had to cancel my 2nd dive of the day. This day 3 people were sick and 2 were unable to dive on the 2nd successive one including me.
Furthermore, there was a bad atmosphere because 2 instructors couldn't get along...and what about the instructor who gave us a hard time (Helmer) when we decided to change teams to be with Christophe!!! If you go to TopDive, ask for Chris, he caters to divers. We are the customers! Do not forget.
I can't give Topdive a good review as the last 2 dives with Chris were great.

Tokerau Village is excellent and
Vaiama Village right next door is good (both at the nirth end)
Can recommending both.
If you're going to the south Raimiti is a bit expensive but is brilliant.

I did 2 dives over a 3 hour time. Each dive was on Nitrox, were drift dive 1 hour each dive. These were great dives, more advanced due to the strong current. The dive master Sebastian was great, helping me get used to the currents. We were diving pretty deep, up to 100 feet. He held my hand to guide me, while signaling to the other 4 divers. The immensity of the coral, fish life so plentiful, from tiny to, small, medium, lots of sharks. I was watching the food chain of the area. A top dive for this 72 year old diver with maybe 130 dives. The drifting dive was fast, more than I experienced before, but great because I got to see so much geography. I would go back in a minute. Oh yes, I had been on a cruise ship, hard to arrange everything myself, on line. They were most helpful at Top Dive.

My husband and I are sailing to Fakarava on the Marina January 21, 2016 and are interested in your dive experience. We have done several dives in varied conditions, but not for many years. We would love to dive with you, but feel that our skills might be too rusty. What would you suggest for two eager, but nervous divers?
Thank you for your input.
