We visited Chief Shakes Island during our stop in Wrangell. Prior to our visit, I had emailed a number of people within the ‘tourist information’ department in Wrangell because I wasn’t sure whether anybody could visit or did you have to be part of a guided tour. I was quite angry that nobody bothered to reply to my emails! Not a good sign for Wrangell’s tourism in my opinion!
We found the island by crossing the little bridge. It was scruffy and overgrown in places.
I did go into the house, which was good. Nobody stopped me to ask for an entrance fee. It was all quite ‘slapdash’.
Having been to the Sealaska Heritage Centre in Juneau, I had a good understanding of Chief Shakes House layout. More needs to be done to promote this island and get it tidied up!

This site provides an interesting look at Tlingit culture. The tribal house is a recreation of earlier tribal houses but the detail is very nice and the carvings well worth a visit. If you are there when a tribe member shares a story of the tribe it is much more meaningful. Enjoy the smell of the cedar building and get a taste of what life was like in the 19th century.

This was an added excursion to an Alaska cruise, and was truly outstanding. We had a presentation by a Tlingit who demonstrated and performed (with family) some songs and dances, and made it relevant to the culture through her interpretations and explanations. The presenter took time to answer questions. Our guide, Adele, professed the visit and provided information before and after. A truly amazing job by all concerned.

The Tlingit interpretation at the Chief Shakes Tribal House was a VERY good part of Wrangell BearFest 2021. We enjoyed the presentation and also the opportunity to talk with Tlingit members and ask questions afterwards. It was an amazing educational and cultural experience. We were so glad to hear that Tlingit language, culture and stories are being passed on from one generation to the next and that they are sharing all of this with the community at large. If you ever get the experience to visit the Tribal House don't pass it up. It is well worth the time.

So privileged to visit Chief Shakes house on a day when the building was open. We were entertained and educated with song, dance, and storytelling. Stunning building that should be a source of pride to the local Tlingit people.

This island could be amazing. The totem poles have been put in little shelters. They no longer stand on the property. The house is locked right now. The one totem pole standing is in disarray. I really wish the locals would take care of this island because of the history behind it.

This is a nice place to see the First Nation totem poll the house was closed on the day we visited but the next day I think the cruise ship was coming in as the flags were out on the walkway on to the island.

Chief shake's Island is a walk over a wooden bridge a short walk from the center of town. On the island is a Tribal House and totems standing. One can also see the totems that are waiting to be repaired. Go experience the history of the Tlinglit people here in Wrangell.

The work being done by this small group of Native Americans is so important for the preservation of their culture. So much has already been lost. I love the Tribal House which is made from cedar. The craftsmanship is amazing. Well done and good luck to all involved.

Easily located and withing walking distance of ferry and cruise ship docks. Interesting place to visit. Great view of town. A few good benches to sit on and watch the tide ebb and flow and listen to bald eagles and the working waterfront.

In Wrangell you can visit a Native Shake House which is on an island at the end of town; they usually do a presentation. Ask about it in your hotel.
