From discussions on the Internet, it seems that the zoo ran out of funding. The SPCA and other animal welfare groups campaigned to have the animals moved to more humane locations during 2020.
While staying at the adjacent Marriott Protea Hotel Bloemfontein Willow Lake, I walked around to the zoo entrance and found it boarded up. This has been a rainy summer so the vegetation has taken over.

I remember thus zoo from when I was a kid and visited it a lot the. Visited it again, not listening tonwarningsvto stay away and I found a zoo that is nothing more than a poorly kept death camp for animals. I could not finish the full zoo as I was so nauseated by the state of the animals, the sad state of the amenities and the General sense of doom in the place.

Whilst on holiday from Cape Town, we excitedly visited the once beautiful zoo on the 17th October. We paid full price at the ticket office and received a brochure/map. We were fully expecting to see all that is on the brochure/map indicating where all the animals are. What a shock and disappointment to discover that 75% of the animals were not there anymore.
Where the snakes once were are now only rotting rodents IN the glass cages. The two hienas are in separate camps with tall weeds. There were only birds, a leopard in a cam with weeds only, a donkey, few zebras, buck and some monkeys.
To make us pay for this and not inform us of the situation is unacceptable. Twice I went to the office to request a refund but the cashier said the manager is not available, thus I did not get a refund.
I am now awaiting the Executive Mayor's response...

Very dirty zoo. Few animals. No Elephant, no Giraffe, No Crocodile, a few bucks, expensive to visit as a family.

Not too many animals. Does not look like all the animals are being taken care of. We met one person who was checking on the animals and acted like a tour guide which was cool as he gave us some interesting information about the animals. Nice place to braai and socialize. Would love to see more animals as some cages were empty.

I had a nice view of this zoo from my hotel room window at the Protea hotel. Zoo is very centrally located for the locals. And very convenient for anyone staying at the Protea Willows hotel. They actually give you a key to the back gate of the zoo for a small fee.

A warm day enjoyed at the zoo. Animals also felt the heat, but at least we got to see most animals. Again a good experience.

We actually found the zoo almost empty, no much animals as for children to enjoy their curiosity.
There was no power and no way to see the reptiles in their rooms. There was suppose to be a guidance at the entrance when people pay as to advise them about the current state of the zoo.

Bloemfontien zoo is a small zoo; therefore, one should not be expecting a lot from this trip and rather it can be a small fun and family walk and get out. There are several big animals like lions, elephant, tiger etc. You can carry stuff to barbecue too as there are several barbecue designated places. This zoo is hassle-free and located in the middle of the city.
The snake section has a few interesting species of snakes as well. This is what we enjoyed most.
