Super clean, well maintained exhibits and such a huge variety of different planes and war vehicles. Kids loved the artillery, I found the library and museum particularly fascinating. New, clean bathrooms. Safe area and parking. A must for international and local visitors

Nice, beautiful and well maintained museum. Various samples of weapons, equipment and types of weapons have been collected. A lot of equipment and weapons from the Second World War. There are various planes, helicopter, submarine and guns. You can walk into or look inside some of the exhibits.
There were very few people. We went on Monday at lunchtime. Apparently everyone was at work.
It’s true that you can’t take photos in two pavilions, for some reason it’s unclear.
Overall the museum is interesting, but the theme is sad. How people learned to kill each other.

Impressive collection of vehicles, weapons and planes from the First and especially the Second World War. I would never expect to find such a collection here. I left impressed. I recommend.

I’ve been to South Africa so many times and only now did I come across this museum which has so many military artefacts. I am so impressed by the exhibits of military uniforms aircrafts vehicles etc. also what really positively surprised me is the Polish connection exhibition with so much information and artefacts too! I’m originally from Poland and was always curious if there is any connection so there you go -:) I found lots that dates back to Jan Smuts times!! And also Outdshoorn - if you’re into history WWI and WWII it’s a place to visit. Prices are very reasonable so no complaints

If you are remotely interested in Military History you have to go to this museum, it is excellent, with an array of aircraft such as Spitfire, Hurricane, FW190, MBF109, Mosquito, tanks including Centurion, M4 Sherman, Artillery Flak88, Pak, 7lbers to name but a few, some great models there are numerous halls with various information on history ciovering the Zulu and South African Wars - the guide book I had recommended 2hrs I spent double that - definately well worth going.

The Museum of Military History was the only museum I visited during a two-week trip to South Africa due to the fact that the museums were closed due to the pandemic. On the day of departure, the museums opened, and I visited this museum in the morning, being the only visitor for an hour. I have visited many military museums in Russia, Germany, France, Poland, and the USA. The Museum in Johannesburg has an interesting and unusual collection. This is due to the history of South Africa, which at first as a British dominion was obliged to participate in World War I, and then in World War II. From each war they brought not only their own equipment, but also captured German. There is a German Focke-Wulf-190 fighter-bomber, the most famous fighter of World War II Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the Emil version. The world's first mass-produced jet fighter Messerschmitt-262. This is the only surviving modification of a two-seat night fighter interceptor captured in Magdeburg and flown in South Africa until 1971. Naturally, British equipment, which was armed with the army of the South African Union, is widely represented. The winner of the Battle of Britain Spitfire and structurally not very successful Hurricane. They even managed to place a high-speed de Havilland Mosquito bomber under the roof. Armored vehicles are represented by American tanks M4 Sherman, M3 Stewart, who participated in the famous Battle of El Alaimen. South African trophies from Rommel's army in Egypt are represented by German artillery, including the famous Acht-acht 88 mm Flak 37 anti-aircraft gun, equally successful against both aircraft and tanks. But there are no Axis tanks in the museum, only the German Sd.Kfz. 251 armored personnel carrier and the Italian Carro Veloce CV-35 tankette. On the turn, British armored vehicles are represented most widely: Comet, Centurion, Crusader, Churchill, Valentine tanks. The museum also reflects the post-war history. South Africa's active participation in the Angolan Civil War from the territory of occupied Namibia was reflected in the museum's collection by a large number of captured Soviet equipment, including the T-54 and the most massive tank of World War II, the T-34, and 30 years later fought in the African jungle. South Africa, which initially imported weapons, began to produce armored vehicles itself to fight pro-Soviet Angola and Mozambique. The museum presents rare examples of South African armored vehicles Eland, Marmon-Herrington for museums of the world. By the way, the presence of its own developed military industry, which grew up on countering sanctions due to apartheid, can be seen in the museum both in the wide range of its South African weapons and equipment, and in the style of the museum. The exhibits are accompanied by detailed comments about the principles of operation of the equipment. This happens only in the countries that produce the equipment. A sure sign of having your own engineering school and science. In this case, the museum becomes an element of the regeneration of the personnel training system and tells not only about the army, but also about the military industry, the supply system, etc. In the process of visiting the museum, I met the director of the museum, a real pro and a very enthusiastic person. After all, remembering Plutarch and Bacon, a museum visitor (in the original, a student) is not a vessel that needs to be filled, but a torch that needs to be lit. And here they are burning...

A great museum with a surprising amount to see - cannons, planes, submarines - all sorts of things. We spent 2 hours there, and could have spent longer (bypassed some of the photos, and smaller exhibits) but left because we were doing the zoo (next door) in the same afternoon. Would well recommend.

The museum is well maintained, was nice and quiet, and full of things to look at. So a nice visit in that sense.
But, I really struggled to enjoy it because there was so little interpretation - just item after item designed to kill people. What little context was provided was almost exclusively Euro-centric. Photos and statues almost exclusively of old white men. There was a dark corner about the "Non European Military Corps" in WW2, but no substantive discussion of who these people were, or their experiences or suffering. And, unless I missed it, hardly anything about more recent wars in and around SA. The Anglo-Boer war was covered but exclusively from White perspectives, and the Angolan border war was briefly covered but only from an SANDF perspective. This museum is desperately crying to be brought into the 21st century, and a post-apartheid South Africa.

Fantastic. Everything you visit there is a new exhibit. Some of the rarest and best preserved militeria are on display here. The Museum, is well laid out, exhibits are well described, the facilities are neat and clean. It spans from the 1800 to current. Its an experience seeing the weaponry you used on display in a museum.

Hi, I have a question about the displayed Me-262 Night Fighter. I am Norwegian and modelling this aircraft for a competition ( 1/4 scale), JWM (Jet World Master) and need some additional pics of the Me-262. This is for the documentation of the aircraft, need end view, top and bottom view. This may be difficult, but all help is very much appreciated. Thanks, Per-Oluf Olsen

Where in the museum did you host your kids party? Could you bring your own food or did you have to use restaurant? Do you remember what you paid for venue? thanks! :)

I did not host a kids party. It is ok if the kids are interested in learning a bit of military history for a hour or so. It is a museum so not the place to run around making a noise. There is a lot of open ground outside the entrance of the museum area for you to have a picnic.
