I enjoyed the walking tour with Lindo on a Saturday. The CBD was quite empty but doing it with someone who knows well the city, the safest street and valuable information to share made my experience very great. Lindo was really nice, passionate and gave a me a lot of tips on the city

Together with family we did a walking tour of the inner city of Joburg with Ntabi as a guide. The tour was pleasant and relaxing. We learned a great deal about the inner city, its past and present history. About the main iconic buidlings and the work still to be done by the local authorities to renovate and put to use so many empty buildings. What shame!!!! that there are so many homeless in this city and yet so many empty spaces to be inhabited. Is this just greed, or bylaws that do not help? We loved the open market with fresh produce and other items; the parks used by ordinary people and yet need lots of maintenance and..., may be public education. We noticed great inequality by looking at the different quarters where banks and mining corporations are located and, those qyarters managed and financed by the local authorities. Many good examples on how to manage the larger parts of the city are there for the local authorities and government to see. Hopefully the common citizenry will enjoy the cleaniness, green environment, etc very soon. Congratulations to Ntabi, you did a good job in answering all of our probing minds. Thank you

We went to Park Station all the way from the airport, waited for half and hour, no green umbrella, no guide, phone on voicemail. Website says 365 days. Very mos-leading info. We were told at the Tourism information that the tours have been shutdown for months now. Very disappointing.

We have been on over 30 Free Walk tours around the world including three tours in Cape Town two weeks earlier. We read that the Johannesburg Free Walks tour had not gone as scheduled over the past several weeks. We called the phone number and Sethu answered the phone. She had received wonderful reviews from tourists who had her as a Free Walks tour guide. She told us that the Johannesburg Free Walks was being reorganized and was starting again soon. We asked if she could give us a private tour of the same areas to which she agreed. Sethu originally worked with the Cape Town Free Walks tours and had been with the Johannesburg company for several years. She gave us an incredible tour of both Braamfontein and the city center which exceeded our expectations. She charged us what I would have normally paid in tips and I gave her even more since she went above and beyond giving us an incredible day seeing the sights. It is our understanding that the Free Walks Tour will be up and running again soon with Sethu as one of the guides. Take note that that they will be meeting at a different place than in the past.

We arrived at joburg park station this morning and saw no green umbrella so asked a young lad who for a small fee directed us to tourist information who said the free walking tours are no longer happening. Suggest you phone first...

we took the downtown tour with Sethu guide and it was really cool, I just think the tour could be longer and more complete, but it's worth.

Ich habe die tour durch Braamfontein mit guide Sethu gemacht. Sehr interessant!
Die Fakten wirken nicht runtergebetet, sondern man wird richtig mitgenommen und für die Stadt begeistert. Sehr empfehlenswert!

We were so happy we connected with Xoliswa for our tour! It was confusing to start as note, the station will not allow her to display her umbrella so we had a hard time finding her. She approached us, with a large tshirt on that said FREE WALKING TOURS so it was pretty obvious she was who she said she was. She seemed to have an eagle eye and pulled our group together based on lost looking tourists. If you can't find her, she works with the tour operator in the food court directly behind the Information Booth. You will also leave your bags with the operator for safety, and it's perfectly fine!
Once we were ready to go, Xoliswa was completely upfront and good about warning us when to put away our phones and wallets. My husband and I felt perfectly safe at every step of the way. You will see some shady characters, but they will not approach you!
The tour itself was incredibility informative and we had many highlights to boast about afterwards. Xoliswa is a beacon of knowledge about her city and it's history. We saw the City Centre at it's past, present and discussed South Africa's hopes for the future thanks to her. The tallest building in Africa, the pink painted buildings from activists, the market, and the Chancellor House of Mandela, and so much more. This tour has a high value in our books!

I think something like 100 rand? I forgot the exact amount, but in my opinion, 5 euro is the least you should give. You get at least an hour of (enthusiastic) information. And the fewer people there are, the more private attention you get and it also means that the guide would earn less. So when you had a good experience then you should pay more is my opinion.
